Saudi Arabia's Manga Productions has made history by becoming the first Middle Eastern sponsor of AnimeJapan 2025, one of the major anime conventions. The event, held at the Tokyo Big Sight Exhibition Centre, attracted over 150,000 visitors and showcased more than 100 international exhibitors. A subsidiary of the Mohammed bin Salman Foundation (Misk), Manga Productions' participation highlighted Saudi Arabia's expanding footprint in the global anime industry. The company's presence at the event provided attendees with an immersive cultural experience, featuring interactive exhibitions such as traditional Saudi attire demonstrations and Saudi coffee tastings, blending heritage with innovation. Essam Bukhary, CEO of Manga Productions, delivered a keynote address titled 'A New Era of Animation! The Future of 'Saudinimation' Driven by Japan and Saudi Arabia.' His speech emphasised the growing collaboration between the two nations and the potential for joint ventures in animation production. 'The enthusiastic reception we received underscores our commitment to showcasing Saudi creativity on the global stage,' Bukhary stated. 'AnimeJapan 2025 marked a significant step in fostering co-productions and international partnerships, aligning with Saudi Arabia's vision of becoming a hub for entertainment innovation.' The Manga Productions pavilion also hosted prominent Japanese officials, including Vice Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Akamatsu Ken and Vice Minister of the Environment Kobayashi Fumiaki, reflecting a deepening cultural and diplomatic exchange between Saudi Arabia and Japan. Abdulaziz Al-Mowani, Director of Marketing and Communications at Manga Productions, highlighted the strategic importance of the event, and stated: 'This platform allowed us to share Saudi Arabia's creative identity while establishing key media and industry relationships. Japan FM to Asharq Al-Awsat: Two-State Solution Key to Stability, Gaza Humanitarian Crisis Dire
Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya emphasized the need to fully implement the prisoner exchange deal and ceasefire agreement between Hamas and Israel, ensuring compliance with all its provisions before moving to the next phase to achieve long-term regional stability. He underscored the importance of a two-state solution for lasting peace and international security. Separately, Iwaya acknowledged security threats facing Japan, prompting Tokyo to sign an agreement with the United States to work closely toward a "free and open Indo-Pacific," further strengthening the bilateral alliance. In an interview with Asharq Al-Awsat, Iwaya stated that Japan faces a complex security environment, the most challenging since World War Two, due to rapid military advancements, including the enhancement of nuclear and missile capabilities, and increasing pressure to impose unilateral changes to the status quo by force. Japan-Saudi relations On another front, Iwaya revealed that Tokyo signed a memorandum with Riyadh during Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan bin Abdullah's recent visit to establish a Strategic Partnership Council (SPC), chaired by the leaders of both countries, to boost bilateral dialogue and cooperation across various sectors. Japan attaches great importance to its strategic partnership with Saudi Arabia, given its pivotal role among Arab and Islamic nations, Iwaya said. He added that in recent years, bilateral cooperation has expanded significantly under the Japan-Saudi Vision 2030 initiative, moving beyond the traditional energy sector, which is focused on crude oil to include clean energy, tourism, culture, sports, and entertainment. With Saudi Arabia's rapid progress in politics, economy, advanced technologies, culture, and sports, cooperation opportunities between Tokyo and Riyadh are growing. Japan's expertise, advanced technologies, and cultural content contribute to the success of the Kingdom's ambitious projects, including smart cities, tourism, and entertainment initiatives, he said. Iwaya also highlighted Japan's hosting of Expo 2025 Osaka-Kansai, which will pass the torch to Expo 2030 Riyadh. As Saudi Arabia takes on an increasingly significant role in promoting peace and stability in the Middle East, strengthening bilateral cooperation in this domain is essential, he stressed. Strategic dialogue The Japanese foreign minister noted that he held the second strategic dialogue with his Saudi counterpart in Tokyo in February, discussing ways to deepen bilateral relations across multiple sectors and deepen cooperation on regional and international issues. The SPC which will serve as a leadership hub to further elevate bilateral ties, Iwaya said. "This year marks the 70th anniversary of Japan-Saudi diplomatic relations, and I am committed to making every effort to strengthen our partnership." Palestinian issue Regarding Japan's position on the Palestinian issue, Iwaya affirmed that Tokyo is closely monitoring the situation in Gaza and maintaining strong communication with relevant countries and international organizations. He stressed that Japan is actively contributing to global efforts to improve humanitarian conditions in Gaza and support reconstruction while intensifying diplomatic initiatives to achieve a two-state solution and ensure long-term peace and regional stability. Iwaya also highlighted Japan's role in providing humanitarian aid to Gaza and facilitating progress in hostage releases following the ceasefire agreement implemented in January. It is crucial to ensure the full implementation of the agreement and transition to the next phase for lasting regional stability, he said. Syria crisis Iwaya said Tokyo is closely monitoring developments in Syria with deep concern and remains in contact with members of the new government to assess how best to respond to the situation. Japan views the Syrian crisis comprehensively, based on its firm belief in the need to support all Syrians, he told Asharq Al-Awsat. Japan has provided humanitarian aid to those in need, aiming to support them in both the medium and long term. He noted that Japan has contributed to capacity-building efforts for Syria's future and expressed hope for a peaceful and stable transition of power. He emphasized the importance of inclusive political settlement through dialogue among Syrians, pledging that Tokyo would work closely with the international community to achieve this goal. Asian security cooperation On the prospect of forming an Asian alliance to counter China's military expansion and North Korea's missile threats, Iwaya said Japan is making every effort to bolster its defense capabilities in line with national security strategies while strengthening cooperation with like-minded allies. He stressed that Japan is committed to enhancing deterrence and response capabilities within its alliance with the United States, ensuring greater resilience and sustainability. Cooperation will continue toward achieving a free and open Indo-Pacific region, he added.

RIYADH: The Ambassador of Japan to Saudi Arabia Yasunari Morino hosted an iftar at the Cultural Palace in the Diplomatic Quarter, welcoming Saudi alumni of Japanese universities and academic institutions. In his opening remarks, the ambassador expressed his appreciation for sharing this sacred moment of Ramadan with the guests and extended warm wishes for peace, joy, and harmony on the auspicious occasion. This year marks the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and Saudi Arabia — a milestone in the enduring partnership between the two nations. Morino acknowledged the invaluable role of Saudi alumni of Japanese universities in strengthening bilateral ties, and emphasized the Japanese Embassy's deep appreciation for their continued support in fostering lasting friendship and cooperation. Speaking to Arab News Morino said: 'It is my honor to receive all good friends of our Embassy, those Saudis who have experienced studying in Japan. This year marks the 70th anniversary of our diplomatic relations so we consider those Saudis as good friends for Japan. Their contribution has been enormous in the cordial relations, and we appreciate their continued support for deepening Japan-Saudi relations.' The ambassador highlighted the latest high-level visits and ministerial meetings that led to tangible progress in key areas such as economy, energy, and technological cooperation. In his opening remarks he also noted the growing presence of Japanese companies in Saudi Arabia and their business activities seeking new opportunities for mutual growth and collaboration. Regarding cultural exchange, the ambassador highlighted the remarkable success of the Japanese cultural event 'Nihon Matsuri' held last year, which approximately 8,000 people visited, as representing increasing interest in Japan among the Saudi people. He also praised the success of the Japanese Speech Contest, where many talented participants demonstrated their outstanding language skills. Looking ahead to the Osaka-Kansai Expo this April, the ambassador reaffirmed Japan's commitment to easing visa requirements for Saudi citizens and residents by introducing electronic tourist visas, multiple-entry visas, and visa exemption for Saudi diplomatic and special passport holders. He expressed his hope that these measures will further promote tourism, business, and educational exchanges between the two countries. During the iftar, attendees reconnected with fellow alumni, exchanged views on deepening their network, and reaffirmed their commitment to further enhancing Japan-Saudi relations. Majed Abualola, who studied in Japan from 2014-2024 and now works as a business development manager in SBI Middle East, a pivotal bridge for investment opportunities between Japan and the Middle East, told Arab News: 'I am grateful to the ambassador for this opportunity to interact with old friends and alumni from Japanese institutions. It is a good opportunity for networking and connecting with them.' Saudi writer Dr. Khalid Al-Rashoud, who studied in Japan and has written two books on Saudi-Japanese relations, told Arab News: 'As a Saudi graduate of Japanese universities, attending the Japanese Embassy's iftar felt like a reunion, a continuation of the cultural bridge I have been fortunate to walk across. It's truly heartwarming to see the Embassy's dedication to honoring Ramadan, creating an atmosphere of shared respect and understanding. 'The familiar flavors of iftar, combined with the subtle touches of Japanese hospitality, made for a truly memorable evening,' said Al-Rashoud. Japanese car exhibition zooms into Ithra
DHAHRAN: Ithra, the King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture, is presenting a special vintage car exhibition, which began on Thursday. For the latest updates, follow us on Instagram @ The exhibition is part of the Japan Cultural Days event, hosted at Ithra headquarters in Dhahran to celebrate 70 years of Japan-Saudi relations. The exhibition is being held outdoors in the Energy Exhibit area, which provides a distinctive setting for this unique display. Maha Abdulhadi, creative programs specialist at Ithra, told Arab News: 'With help from Japanese classic car enthusiasts Ali Aldhamin and Nazar Alqlaf, we curated this display to showcase a broad range of vehicles that represent a significant chapter in the history of the Japanese car industry, which is highly appreciated in Saudi Arabia.' The exhibition features 13 cars, most of which are owned by private collectors in Qatif, and spans a variety of classic models, modern designs, and concept vehicles. 'This is a rare opportunity for car enthusiasts in the Kingdom to experience Japanese engineering and design up close,' Abdulhadi said. The display highlights the design, technology and innovative features of Japanese vehicles, with the cars available for viewing from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. each day. 'This unique exhibit showcases Japan's innovative designs, precision engineering, and passion for performance, enhancing the festival experience,' Abdulhadi said. 'A Japanese car show as part of the Japan Cultural Days highlights Japan's rich automotive heritage, fosters community engagement, and promotes cultural exchange. It also attracts car enthusiasts.' The exhibition ends on February 8, marking the conclusion of the Japan Cultural Days celebration.
