Japan shipper ONE hedges against China risks with home-built vessels
TOKYO -- Japanese container shipper Ocean Network Express (ONE) unveiled a Japan-built ship on Tuesday, one of 15 vessels it plans to launch in the next two years as it looks to mitigate risks from ongoing U.S.-China tensions. "We like to think we are an international company, truly a global international company," said CEO Jeremy Nixon at the christening of a ship at an Imabari Shipbuilding plant in Mihara, Hiroshima prefecture, on Tuesday. "I'm very pleased to say that this was the first set of ships that we built, which are owned by ONE."

2026 Lexus RZ to get added range, yoked steer-by-wire in midcycle update
BRUSSELS — Lexus will introduce its first production application of steer-by-wire technology in the upper trims of the electric RZ crossover for the 2026 model year, accompanying battery system changes that promise to improve its range. Brand officials discussed the midcycle updates here as part of a briefing for European journalists on improvements to the model as it is sold in the region. However, similar actions are expected for models of the Japan-built EV destined to be sold in the U.S. as well, though the timing is expected to lag that of Europe. The 2026 Lexus RZ will feature a 77-kilowatt-hour battery pack, up from the current version's 71.4 kWh, that brand officials said would be good for up to an additional 100 km, or about 62 miles of range, depending on the trim model and 'final homologation.' Those figures could differ in U.S. versions, however. The top EPA-estimated range for the front-wheel-drive RZ is 262 miles. Lexus officials said new battery preconditioning software would improve charging times to 30 minutes, an improvement of 25 minutes for charging without the software, which puts the battery pack in the optimal condition to accept power. Inside the cabin, the upper trim levels, including a new F-Sport performance trim, feature a steer-by-wire system that replaces traditional mechanical linkages with electronic inputs that can vary based on speed and driver intent. Vehicles with steer-by-wire feature a yoke instead of a traditional steering wheel, with the yoke employing a limited range of motion to convey driver intent to the vehicle. Lexus introduced the RZ into its U.S. lineup in 2022 as a 2023 model. The brand sold 9,697 RZs in the U.S. in 2024, up 80 percent from the previous year. Have an opinion about this story? Japan Sees ‘Harsh' Security Environment, Boosts Philippines Ties
(Bloomberg) -- The Philippines and Japan agreed to increase their defense cooperation amid a 'harsh' security environment and China's attempt to change the global order, officials said on Monday. Teodoro criticized what he said were 'unilateral attempts by China and other countries to change the international order and the narrative.' 'We share the common cause of resisting any unilateral attempt to reshape the global order' and international law by force, Teodoro said after their meeting. Nakatani said there's a growing need for the Philippines and Japan to increase their defense cooperation amid a 'harsh' security environment. The Japanese official said both nations agreed to advance talks on deeper sharing of information and operational collaboration. 'We also agreed to commence discussion between defense authorities on military information protection mechanism,' he said. Defense ties between Philippines and Japan — both allies of the US — have deepened in recent years as both grappled with their respective territorial disputes with Beijing in the South and East China Seas. Manila last week said a Chinese military chopper made 'dangerous maneuvers' near a Philippine fisheries aircraft over the disputed Scarborough Shoal in the South China Sea. Both countries last year signed an agreement that facilitates mutual military visits, and Tokyo has agreed to provide coastal radars and boats to help bolster Manila's maritime security operations. Nakatani on Sunday visited key Philippine military bases — one that hosts a Japan-built air surveillance radar system and another which the US military can access. He will meet with Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Monday afternoon.
