Diamond Heels take down Florida State to move on in ACC Tournament

The North Carolina Tar Heels will be playing for the ACC Championship on Sunday, seeking their third title win in the last five years following a 7-5 win over Florida State. And for the second-straight day, they came back from a deficit to get it done. In a back-and-forth game on Saturday, the Tar Heels prevailed late, getting two runs in the ninth to win it. After UNC got two runners on with a single and then a bunt, it was Kane Kepley's RBI single that was the difference in the win. Backed behind a strong start from Jason DeCaro, UNC grabbed a 3-1 lead over the Seminoles. But Florida State rallied in the fifth inning, scoring three runs to grab a 4-3 lead. With Florida State having the momentum, it was time for UNC's best player to strike again. Luke Stevenson hit a two-run home run in the top of the sixth, giving UNC the lead at 5-4. Florida State tied it again before the magic happened. UNC's two-run ninth inning was the difference and sends UNC to Sunday's ACC championship game against Boston College. DeCaro pitched 4.1 innings, giving up five hits and three hits in his outing. He was strong once again, as well as the bullpen. Need a break? UNC baseball dominates Campbell as 2025 regular season wraps up

As the UNC baseball team wraps up the regular season portion of its 2025 schedule, the race for a top seed in NCAA Regionals heats up. North Carolina, currently third in a loaded ACC, welcomed in-state rival Campbell University to Boshamer Stadium on Tuesday night. The Camels are in danger of missing the NCAA Tournament for a second-consecutive year, but still posed a solid challenge to the Diamond Heels. Advertisement Only leading Campbell 3-1 after the fifth inning, UNC distanced itself with seven runs in the succeeding two innings, winning 10-1 for its fourth-straight victory. Though Jason DeCaro enjoyed another strong outing for North Carolina (36-10, 15-9 ACC), earning the win with six strikeouts and one run through five innings, the Diamond Heels' bullpen was perfect. Ryan Lynch relieved DeCaro with two perfect innings, Camron Seagraves struck out all three batters he faced in the eighth, then Cale Bolton tossed a perfect ninth. Every UNC batter had either a hit, run or RBI, with designated hitter Rom Kellis leading the charge. Kellis mashed three hits in four plate appearances, driving in three runs and scoring twice more. Kellis' 2-run, sixth-inning extended North Carolina's advantage to 5-1, he drove in Alex Madera on a seventh-inning, then later scored on a wild pitch. Advertisement Madera opened the Diamond Heels' scoring barrage in the third inning, scoring on a throwing error by Campbell second baseman Jonah Oster. UNC capitalized on its opportunities at the dish, scoring 10 runs on nine hits. North Carolina now enters its toughest stretch to close out its regular season, playing its final two series against NC State (May 8, 9, 11) and Florida State (May 15, 16, 17), the lone two teams ahead of North Carolina in the ACC standings. In between both series, the Diamond Heels will face UNC-Wilmington May 13, in their final home game. Sixth-straight ACC series victory vaults UNC baseball into Top 5 of April 28 Coaches Poll

The North Carolina Tar Heels continue to showcase their winning ways on the baseball diamond, nabbing their sixth-consecutive ACC series victory by taking two games from Pitt over the weekend. UNC started its weekend series with a 15-5, record-setting domination of the host Panthers (20-21, 6-15 ACC), then broke back into the winning column with a 6-0 shutout victory on Sunday. Gavin Gallaher tied North Carolina's (33-10, 15-9 ACC) single-game home run record in Friday's blowout, then Jason DeCaro hurled seven shutout innings on Sunday. Advertisement The Diamond Heels maintained their positioning near a crowded top of the ACC, finding themselves 1.5 games behind rival NC State for first place. With another successful weekend, it should come as no surprise that UNC climbed in the latest rankings. North Carolina launched itself five spots in the April 28 USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll, trailing just LSU (second) and top-ranked Texas. The Diamond Heels are also the highest-ranked ACC team, just a spot ahead of Clemson and five spots ahead of Florida State. UNC has midweek games on Tuesday, April 29 against George Mason and the following day against Queens, then off this coming weekend before hosting Campbell on May 6. Advertisement Whereas North Carolina won a majority of its 2024 games due to a loaded offense, the story of 2025 is starting pitching. Jake Knapp, Aidan Haugh and Jason DeCaro all have earned run averages under 4.00, while Knapp's nine victores are the second most in Division I. Can the Diamond Heels maintain their successful brand of baseball in the postseason? We're hoping so, as UNC looks to make its second-consecutive College World Series appearance.
