Sixth-straight ACC series victory vaults UNC baseball into Top 5 of April 28 Coaches Poll Can the UNC baseball squad ride its momentum into the postseason?
The North Carolina Tar Heels continue to showcase their winning ways on the baseball diamond, nabbing their sixth-consecutive ACC series victory by taking two games from Pitt over the weekend.
UNC started its weekend series with a 15-5, record-setting domination of the host Panthers (20-21, 6-15 ACC), then broke back into the winning column with a 6-0 shutout victory on Sunday. Gavin Gallaher tied North Carolina's (33-10, 15-9 ACC) single-game home run record in Friday's blowout, then Jason DeCaro hurled seven shutout innings on Sunday.
The Diamond Heels maintained their positioning near a crowded top of the ACC, finding themselves 1.5 games behind rival NC State for first place.
With another successful weekend, it should come as no surprise that UNC climbed in the latest rankings. North Carolina launched itself five spots in the April 28 USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll, trailing just LSU (second) and top-ranked Texas.
The Diamond Heels are also the highest-ranked ACC team, just a spot ahead of Clemson and five spots ahead of Florida State.
UNC has midweek games on Tuesday, April 29 against George Mason and the following day against Queens, then off this coming weekend before hosting Campbell on May 6.
Whereas North Carolina won a majority of its 2024 games due to a loaded offense, the story of 2025 is starting pitching. Jake Knapp, Aidan Haugh and Jason DeCaro all have earned run averages under 4.00, while Knapp's nine victores are the second most in Division I.
Can the Diamond Heels maintain their successful brand of baseball in the postseason? We're hoping so, as UNC looks to make its second-consecutive College World Series appearance.

Spartans are bowling in preseason CBS Sports projections

See where Brad Crawford of CBS Sports has the Spartans landing in his preseason bowl projections Michigan State football is heading right down the road for its first bowl game in four years. Or at least that's how Brad Crawford of CBS Sports has it in his preseason bowl projections. Crawford released his preseason bowl projections for the upcoming season on Thursday, with the Spartans making the cut. He has Michigan State landing in the GameAbove Sports Bowl in Detroit in his opening projections for this season. The Spartans are projected to play the Toledo Rockets out of the Mid-American Conference. The GameAbove Sports Bowl is played at Ford Field in Detroit on December 26. Ironically, if this projection were to play out, it would be two straight games at Ford Field to end the 2025 season for the Spartans as their regular season finale against Maryland is also set to be played there on November 29. Michigan State finished 5-7 last year in head coach Jonathan Smith's first year leading the Spartans. Michigan State last reached the postseason in 2021 when they beat Pitt in the Peach Bowl. Michigan State has a win total over/under of 5.5 entering the season, so landing in the GameAbove Sports Bowl is right about in line with the betting odds for them this year. Hopefully, Michigan State is able to play above that and end up in a higher level bowl game but I also wouldn't hate the opportunity for the Spartans to play in a bowl game in their own backyard if it worked out that way. Michigan State opens the 2025 season on August 29 in a home game against Western Michigan. Kickoff from Spartan Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET and the game will be televised on FS1. Why Chuba Hubbard could see a fantasy dip this season

Yahoo Fantasy's Matt Harmon and Justin Boone look at the questions surrounding the Panthers backfield given the addition of Rico Dowdle. Hear the full conversation on the 'Yahoo Fantasy Forecast' podcast - and subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you listen. View more Video Transcript Chuba Hubbard, now Hubbard had a great season last year. I think this is one where we could start to poke some holes in because he wasn't that efficient as a pass catcher last season. But you know who was efficient as a pass catcher last year? Rico Dowdle, who the team went out and added, and there has been some comments from the coaching staff that this could potentially be more of a committee backfield where they use Rico Dowdle this season in that role. Potentially. So I think that's a scenario where maybe Chuba Hubbard gives up a little bit of the passing. That bumps him down. And yet you and I talked recently on the show about the fact that the Panthers have a very nice run out at the start of the season, and I think Chuba Hubbard, for what he maybe will lose in the passing game, he could make up for it with this offense, just generally being better, being in scoring position more often. Um, so for him there's some question marks there about maybe other guys getting more involved, but in general, I think he's probably going to be OK, but more as an RB2 as those occasional spike Darby one weeks. Yeah, I mean, Chuba Hubbard last year, 12th among running backs in target shares, so he was used in the passing game. Um, the Trevor ETN, the 4th round running back that they took, you know, he could, he was like a theory, oh, maybe that he could take some pass catching work, didn't look really ready to play in the preseason, uh, it was not, not, not a lot of highlight moments for him, um, but 68.7% total snaps for Chuba Hubbard last year and he obviously missed time too, so, uh, he didn't play a full, full season. He has a lot of room to give up some snaps and still be very useful for fantasy football. So I, I found myself kind of willing to bet on Chuba Hubbard, just cause I, I do find myself to be a little high on this Panthers offense in general. So, I have Camara and Hubbard, the highest ranked among this group, thirty-eighth and thirty-ninth overall. Close

Steelers' Mike Tomlin wants Kaleb Johnson to trust himself more ahead of preseason Week 2

The pressure and noise surrounding Steelers rookie RB Kaleb Johnson has skyrocketed throughout the week — and HC Mike Tomlin shared his own take on the third-rounder's development. Like any rookie making their NFL debut, Johnson's performance in the Steelers' preseason opener was filled with ups and downs — and while many critics have been laser-focused on the negatives over the past week, Tomlin revealed the changes he expects heading into preseason Week 2. "I just want to see [Kaleb Johnson] trust himself more," Tomlin told reporters on Thursday. "I want to see him play more instinctively, trust his talents. And that's reasonable to expect between the first experience and the second experience.' Finding and hitting open lanes was arguably Johnson's strongest quality coming out of college — but it may take more adapting to NFL speed before the rookie running back can replicate his success at Iowa. Tomlin's expectations for Johnson mirror those of Steelers Nation — and our own here at Steelers Wire, as he's one of four players to make our must-watch list ahead of the preseason Week 2 matchup versus the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
