Sixth-straight ACC series victory vaults UNC baseball into Top 5 of April 28 Coaches Poll Can the UNC baseball squad ride its momentum into the postseason?
The North Carolina Tar Heels continue to showcase their winning ways on the baseball diamond, nabbing their sixth-consecutive ACC series victory by taking two games from Pitt over the weekend.
UNC started its weekend series with a 15-5, record-setting domination of the host Panthers (20-21, 6-15 ACC), then broke back into the winning column with a 6-0 shutout victory on Sunday. Gavin Gallaher tied North Carolina's (33-10, 15-9 ACC) single-game home run record in Friday's blowout, then Jason DeCaro hurled seven shutout innings on Sunday.
The Diamond Heels maintained their positioning near a crowded top of the ACC, finding themselves 1.5 games behind rival NC State for first place.
With another successful weekend, it should come as no surprise that UNC climbed in the latest rankings. North Carolina launched itself five spots in the April 28 USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll, trailing just LSU (second) and top-ranked Texas.
The Diamond Heels are also the highest-ranked ACC team, just a spot ahead of Clemson and five spots ahead of Florida State.
UNC has midweek games on Tuesday, April 29 against George Mason and the following day against Queens, then off this coming weekend before hosting Campbell on May 6.
Whereas North Carolina won a majority of its 2024 games due to a loaded offense, the story of 2025 is starting pitching. Jake Knapp, Aidan Haugh and Jason DeCaro all have earned run averages under 4.00, while Knapp's nine victores are the second most in Division I.
Can the Diamond Heels maintain their successful brand of baseball in the postseason? We're hoping so, as UNC looks to make its second-consecutive College World Series appearance.

Bill Belichick Breaks Silence on NIL Chaos

Bill Belichick Breaks Silence on NIL Chaos originally appeared on Athlon Sports. When a six-time Super Bowl champion like Bill Belichick speaks, the sports world listens and this time, it's not about the NFL, but the chaos surrounding college football's NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) era. Advertisement Belichick, who stunned fans by returning to the college sidelines this spring as head coach of North Carolina, didn't mince words when asked about the state of NIL during the ACC Spring Meetings. With the highly anticipated House v. NCAA settlement still pending after nearly a month on U.S. District Judge Claudia Wilken's desk, the legendary coach made his stance clear. 'For me, it's really pretty simple: I'd say, tell me what the rules are and then we'll play by them,' Belichick told ESPN's Rece Davis on the College GameDay Podcast. 'Right now a lot of it is up in the air.' Belichick, now 73 and in his first college role since the 1970s, is entering this new chapter amidst massive uncertainty. More than 2,000 athletes entered the football transfer portal in 2024 alone, and the current NIL landscape is largely unregulated which is fueling concerns among coaches and administrators across the country. If approved, the House settlement is expected to reshape enforcement through a newly formed College Sports Commission. Power Four conferences have already drafted new membership contracts that would bind schools to future decisions by this independent body in an attempt to stabilize the current free-for-all. UNC head coach Bill BelichickBob Donnan-Imagn Images 'Whatever it is… we'll figure it out,' Belichick added. 'But I'd say right now it's a lot of 'we're not sure.'… I think things will settle eventually.' Advertisement His comments echo sentiments from fellow ACC coach Dabo Swinney, who simply stated, 'We just want some rules.' The anticipation for clarity is palpable. With the NCAA expected to relinquish enforcement power to this new commission, coaches like Belichick are asking for one thing: a clear rulebook. Belichick isn't just adjusting to college football, he's calling for its transformation. And until there's structure, even the greatest minds in football are left waiting. Surprising NHL Team Expected to Be 'Major' Players in Free Agency

Surprising NHL Team Expected to Be 'Major' Players in Free Agency originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The NHL offseason is almost upon us, with the 2025 Stanley Cup Final getting set to start on Wednesday. This summer is expected to be very active for a lot of teams, with multiple sides looking to get close to winning a title. Advertisement But one team in particular could be a major player in free agency, and that is the Carolina Hurricanes. After losing in the Eastern Conference Final again, Carolina is gearing up for a massive offseason. Hurricanes general manager Eric Tulsky spoke about the upcoming summer, hinting at the plans of the team. 'If there's any chance to get better, we're going to take it,' Tulsky said during a postseason meeting with the media. 'We have the full buy-in to spend to the cap if there are ways to do it to get better. "We have so much space and such a strong team. There's no guarantee we can find ways to spend all that money, but we're going to spend all summer trying.' Carolina Hurricanes center Sebastian Aho (20) and Anaheim Ducks defenseman Olen Zellweger (51) watch the puck during the third period at Lenovo Center. James Guillory-Imagn Images It remains unknown which players would be of interest to Carolina, but they will have room to make a big splash. The expected salary cap for next season is coming in at $92.4 million. Advertisement 'Our goal is to win a Cup, and our goal is to win more Cups after that and keep going,' Tulsky said. 'We're trying to build a team that can compete year after year. But competing isn't enough. We want to win. So you've got to find a way to do that.' If the Hurricanes can add some more talent, they may finally be able to get over the hump to reach the Stanley Cup Final. Carolina has a solid core in place, and it seems that they are just a piece or two away from truly contending.
