SANRAL announces full closure of the N3 national road from 9 May
The South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) has confirmed that the N3 highway near Ashburton will be closed in both directions from the evening of 9 May to the early morning of 11 May. This is to allow for the demolition of the Ashburton (Pope Ellis Drive) bridge as part of ongoing road construction along the vital transport corridor. The complete shutdown of the N3 will begin at 20:00 on Friday, 9 May and continue until 5:00 on Sunday, 11 May. During this period, no vehicles will be able to access the N3 between the Lynnfield (Lion Park) and Market Road interchanges. 'Full closures will take place at Lynnfield and Market Road interchanges with both the North bound and South bound traffic being unable to access the N3 during said times,' explained Jason Lowe, SANRAL's KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Specialist Geometrics Engineer. 'The traffic accommodation team, with the assistance of the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI), will manage and monitor the diversion of traffic to the R103.' To accommodate the disruption, SANRAL advises motorists to use the R103 as an alternative route. Northbound traffic from Durban to Pietermaritzburg should exit at Lynnfield and follow the R103 to rejoin the N3 at Market Road. Southbound traffic from Pietermaritzburg to Durban should exit at Market Road and reconnect to the N3 via Lynnfield. Pope Ellis Drive will remain open during the demolition, but will operate under stop/go traffic control. SANRAL warns that significant delays are expected, particularly for vehicles with heavy goods. 'Significant delays are likely to be experienced as the R103 cannot handle the same traffic volumes as the N3,' Lowe cautioned. 'Motorists, especially heavy goods vehicles, are urged to reschedule their trips to avoid traveling during the closure.' Additionally, with traffic volumes expected to exceed the capacity of the R103, SANRAL encourages all road users to plan ahead, adjust routes, and adhere to all signage and speed limits. 'SANRAL wishes to apologise to the motoring public for any inconvenience caused,' Lowe added. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1. The 9.2km stretch of national highway between the Lynnfield (Lion Park) and Market Road interchanges will be closed from May 9 at 8pm until May 11 at 5am. 'If travel is unavoidable, please allow enough extra time to account for the delays. SANRAL wishes to apologise to the motoring public for any inconvenience caused.' Lowe resigns as state representative as he prepares to become Oklahoma County commissioner
Fresh off his election as an Oklahoma County commissioner, state Rep. Jason Lowe, D-Oklahoma City, resigned Monday afternoon from the state Legislature, opening up a third seat in the 101-member House of Representatives. An attorney, the 51-year-old Lowe had served since November 2016 as a state legislator. He served in the House Democratic Caucus and as a chairman of the Oklahoma Legislative Black Caucus. He served on the House Criminal Judiciary and Public Safety committees, among others. 'It's been the honor of a lifetime to serve the great residents of House District 97,' Lowe said. 'I'm thankful to have been elected to serve you and to serve alongside my esteemed colleagues of the Legislature. I want to thank my colleagues for all of their support and insight they've given me over the years.' Gov. Kevin Stitt immediately called a special election to replace Lowe, who represented parts of northeast Oklahoma City, Forest Park, Jones, Lake Aluma, Midwest City and Spencer. According to Stitt's executive proclamation, candidates can file for the election April 21-23, with a potential primary set for June 10. A potential primary runoff election could be held Aug. 12. The date of the special general election depends on whether or not a primary or runoff are necessary. If the runoff isn't necessary, the general election will be Aug. 12. If the primary isn't necessary, the general election will be June 10. If both are necessary, the general election will be Sept. 9. 'I am grateful to have gotten to serve alongside Rep. Lowe during his time in the House of Representatives,' said House Minority Leader Cyndi Munson, also of Oklahoma City. 'He has worked hard to be a voice for his constituents in Oklahoma City and I trust he will continue to serve Oklahomans well in his new capacity as county commissioner. As a longtime advocate and vocal voice on criminal justice reform, I know he will take that same passion to Oklahoma County.' Lowe's ceremonial swearing-in to the county commission will be April 21. He'll represent District 1, succeeding Carrie Blumert, who resigned in September to become the chief executive officer of the Mental Health Association Oklahoma. Lowe beat former state Rep. Anastasia Pittman and Midwest City Councilmember Sara Bana in a primary on Feb. 11 before downing independent Jed Green in the general election on April 1. District 1 includes northeast Oklahoma City, Luther, Spencer, and parts of Midwest City and Del City. 'I've known Jason Lowe for years as a state representative, and I look forward to welcoming him as our newest county commissioner,' District 3 Commissioner Myles Davidson said. 'His heart for service and passion for our community are unmatched. I'm especially looking forward to working with him on one of the most important projects ahead — building a safer, more effective county jail. I'm proud to serve alongside him and excited for what we'll accomplish together for the people of Oklahoma County.' In addition to Lowe's seat, two other seats in the 101-member Oklahoma House now are vacant, both in the Tulsa area. None of the three seats will be filled before the end of the current legislative session in late May. This article originally appeared on Oklahoman: Rep. (Photo by Nuria Martinez-Keel/Oklahoma Voice) OKLAHOMA CITY — A lawmaker from Oklahoma City had his last day in the House Monday after being elected Oklahoma County commissioner. Elected April 1, Democrat Rep. Jason Lowe was expected to be sworn in as county commissioner Monday. A special primary election to fill the now-vacant legislative seat, which covers parts of northeast Oklahoma City and surrounding areas, is June 10. If needed, a special runoff would be Aug. 12 and a special general election on Sept. 9, said Misha Mohr with the State Election Board. Lowe thanked his colleagues, legislative staff and constituents as he addressed the House chamber for the last time. 'It is with a mixture of gratitude, community pride, and definitely sadness that I stand before you today to announce my resignation,' Lowe said on the House floor. While in the Legislature, he chaired the Oklahoma Legislative Black Caucus and worked to host three annual Black History Day celebrations at the Capitol. 'It's been the honor of a lifetime to serve the great residents of House District 97,' he said in a statement. 'I'm thankful to have been elected to serve you and to serve alongside my esteemed colleagues of the legislature. I want to thank my colleagues for all of their support and insight they've given me over the years.' House Minority Leader Cyndi Munson, D-Oklahoma City, said she was grateful to work alongside Lowe in the House. 'He has worked hard to be a voice for his constituents in Oklahoma City, and I trust he will continue to serve Oklahomans well in his new capacity as County Commissioner,' she said in a statement. 'As a longtime advocate and vocal voice on criminal justice reform, I know he will take that same passion to Oklahoma County. He will be missed at the Capitol, but I know his service to Oklahomans will be long-lasting.' There are two other open seats in the Oklahoma House in House Districts 71 and 74. The two Tulsa County-area seats became vacant when lawmakers stepped down to take jobs in city and county government.
