#TrafficAlert: Parts of N2 and M13 to close for King Cetshwayo bridge demolition
The N2 between Springfield Park (Umgeni Interchange) and Spaghetti Junction (EB Cloete Interchange) will close in both directions from Saturday night until Monday morning.
A further closure will be in place on the M13 between 45th Cutting and Westwood Mall (Essex Terrace Interchange) to accommodate the partial demolition of the King Cetshwayo Bridge, which carries the M13 over the N2.
Both closures will be in place simultaneously from 6pm on Saturday, June 21, until 4am on Monday, June 23.
'Construction continues on the upgraded King Cetshwayo Bridge, following its partial demolition in October 2023,' said SANRAL's Provincial Specialist Geometrics Engineer, Jason Lowe.
'This closure is part of the ongoing upgrade process for the N2 and the EB Cloete Interchange, aimed at relieving congestion and improving road safety along this critical national route.'
Motorists are urged to plan for alternative routes during the closure.

N2 Closure Locations (at EB Cloete Interchange):
N3 West Bound (Durban to Pinetown): Ramp to N2 North closed (towards Umhlanga/King Shaka International Airport).
N3 East Bound (Pinetown to Durban): Ramp to N2 North closed.
N2 Northbound: Closed between EB Cloete Interchange and Umgeni Road Interchange.
N2 Closure Locations (at Umgeni Road Interchange):
N2 Southbound: Closed between Umgeni Road Interchange and EB Cloete Interchange. Detour onto M19/Umgeni Road.
M19 East and West Bound: Ramps to N2 South closed.
M13 Closure Locations (King Cetshwayo Bridge Area):
M13 East Bound: Closed at Essex Terrace Interchange (near Westwood Mall).
M13 West Bound: Closed at 45th Avenue (also known as 45th Cutting).
'We understand that these road closures cause major travel disruption so we have minimised the length of the closures and planned them to take place at times when the traffic disruption will be at its least,' said Lowe.
'Trucks and heavy vehicles are advised to try and delay trips over this period, find suitable staging areas or reroute via the M4, M7 or M19 to avoid congestion. Public transport operators are asked to ensure their drivers are aware of route closures and alternatives affecting their commuter routes.'

N1 closure between Atterbury and Rigel set for Sunday, warns Sanral Motorists using the N1 in Pretoria are advised to prepare for temporary road closures on the southbound route this weekend. The road closure is due to planned roadworks by the South African National Roads Agency (Sanral). Sanral announced that the closure will take place on Sunday, from 09:00 to 15:00, on the N1 Section 21 southbound, just before the Rigel Avenue off-ramp, in the direction from Atterbury Road towards Rigel Avenue. Gauteng Provincial Head, Progress Hlahla, said the closure is necessary to facilitate the replacement of an overhead gantry sign as part of Sanral's broader infrastructure upgrade programme. 'This forms part of Sanral's ongoing project to replace ageing overhead signs along national routes,' said Hlahla. 'Many of these signs have faded over time and no longer meet the required standards for night-time visibility and reflectivity. The initiative aims to improve road safety and visibility for all road users.' She explained that all main lanes on the southbound carriageway will be temporarily closed, and traffic will be diverted to the emergency slow lane for the duration of the work to safely carry out the replacement. 'Motorists will be directed to clearly marked alternative routes from Atterbury Road, guiding them to the Rigel on-ramp, where they can rejoin the N1 freeway at Rigel Avenue. Still, road users should expect some delays and are encouraged to plan their trips accordingly.' The road closure was initially set to take place on Saturday, but was postponed to Sunday. Sanral is appealing to all motorists to plan their journeys ahead of time. Drivers are urged to follow traffic accommodation signs and instructions from flag personnel and to remain patient and cautious when travelling through the affected area. Image: File The eThekwini Municipality will need an additional R22 million to complete roadworks on the busy Solomon Mahlangu Drive-M7. The municipality has notified councillors, at a recent council meeting, that there was a need for a contract amendment for the Solomon Mahlangu (M7) contract, which spans from the N2 Solomon Intersection to Wakesleigh and Vusi Mzimela Road. The contract, after being revised, is estimated to now cost R88.6 million. According to the report presented, the contractor was appointed on June 8, 2021, to widen the existing eastbound carriageway of Solomon Mahlangu by providing an additional lane. However, in September 2021, the South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) informed the municipality of its intention to upgrade the existing N2/M7 interchange, similar to the upgraded Umgeni Interchange on the N2 Freeway. The report stated that this then resulted in additional work for the municipality, as a need existed to construct a mechanically stabilised earth wall along the eastbound carriageway of Solomon Mahlangu Drive to accommodate this new off-ramp. According to the municipality, amendments to the contract were motivated by The project has been affected by localised floods, causing damage to the work already under way. The increased rainfall resulted in groundwater flow into the excavated area embankment of the eastern carriageway, causing a slope failure; thus, emergency repairs were undertaken to provide stability. Specialist lateral support work to the embankment is also required to maintain stability of the existing embankment and for the construction to proceed more safely, with this operation resulting in additional costs and extending the duration of the project. Challenges encountered during the construction of the foundation of the Mechanically Stabilised Earth Wall, where, upon excavation, sections of bedrock were discovered along the length of the wall, thus necessitating a redesign of the concrete base dimensions to suit the existing site conditions. The roadworks' additional funding also comes at a time when SANRAL is improving the N3 and N2 road corridors, which are expected to take another eight years to complete, depending on funding availability. The upgrade of the N2 focuses on a 55km length, from the Lovu River on the South Coast to Umdloti on the North Coast, while the N3 upgrade focuses on a 79.3km section from Durban to Pietermaritzburg. On the N2, upgrades are expected at the Isipingo Interchange, Adams Road interchange, and Higginson Highway interchange.

Some 66km of the N2 from Mtamvuna River to the Hibberdene interchange will be upgraded in the next three to five years. Samantha Dladla, project manager of the South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited's (Sanral) KZN, said that it's a flagship project in the province. 'The construction work will be divided into six packages. The first package includes dualling of the CH Mitchell Bridge, the second will be from Mtamvuma to Port Edward, the third from Port Edward to Mpenjati River, the fourth from Mpenjati River to Mbizana River, the fifth from Mbizana River to Marburg, and the sixth from Umtentweni to Hibberdene,' said Dladla. She said the project is significant because it forms part of Sanral's flagship N2 Wild Coast Project from East London to the Mtamvuna River.
