Commanders Hitting Over Hinges On Jayden Daniels' Sophomore Success
National Football League Commanders Hitting Over Hinges On Jayden Daniels' Sophomore Success Published Aug. 7, 2025 9:37 a.m. ET share facebook x reddit link This time last summer, Las Vegas bookmakers had plenty of questions about the Washington Commanders — and it made sense why. The team moved on from veteran head coach Ron Rivera, brought in a brand-new staff and drafted LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels with the second overall pick. Their season win total was set at [O/U] 6.5 games. All the Commanders did was ride Daniels to a 12-5 record, a road playoff win over the top-seeded Detroit Lions and a berth in the NFC Championship Game against the eventual world champion Philadelphia Eagles. Washington was two bad quarters away from the Super Bowl. The question now is, can they run it back? It's a polarizing question in the betting markets, where the Commanders are totaled at [O/U] 9.5 wins with prices as low as 2/1 to win the NFC East and 9/1 to win the conference. They're also favored (-145) to make the playoffs. Washington will need Daniels to avoid the ol' Year 2 regression and it feels paramount that the team successfully navigates wideout Terry McLaurin's recent trade request . McLaurin has surpassed 1,000 receiving yards in five straight seasons, and he caught a career-best 13 touchdowns last year. "There's urgency to sign Terry," a source near the Commanders told me. "He's their best playmaker and one of the best deep threats in the NFL. They're trying to build around Daniels the way Baltimore did with Lamar Jackson." ADVERTISEMENT We'll see if both sides can reach an agreement. Daniels is the unquestioned headliner after completing 69% of his passes for 3,500 yards and 25 touchdowns as a rookie. He rushed for almost 900 yards and added six more scores on the ground, too. People gush over his instincts and decision-making skills. "They do a lot of virtual reality drills with him behind closed doors at super speed," the source continued. "When they challenge him mentally, they get more out of him. They know he'll be ready to go physically. "It's tough to find anyone in that building who thinks last year was a fluke." Respect for Daniels is no different among bettors and bookmakers, either. Only Jackson, Joe Burrow, Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes have shorter odds to win league MVP at sportsbooks across the United States. The hype is real. Jayden Daniels' 2025 NFL MVP odds DraftKings: +750 (bet $10 to win $85 total) BetMGM: +850 (bet $10 to win $95 total) Caesars: +900 (bet $10 to win $100 total) SuperBook: +1000 (bet $10 to win $110 total) FanDuel: +1000 (bet $10 to win $110 total) Circa: +1300 (bet $10 to win $140 total) I'm hesitant to say the Commanders will match last year's surprise playoff run and expectations are understandably different when you're trying to sustain success. But offseason additions like Deebo Samuel, Laremy Tunsil, Von Miller and Javon Kinlaw provide optimism for double-digit victories. It'll also help if Washington converts close to 79% of its fourth-down conversions , a success rate that led the league a year ago. Assuming McLaurin returns to the fold, I like Washington's Over. PICK: Commanders (-110) Over 9.5 wins Sam Panayotovich is a sports betting analyst for FOX Sports and the BetMGM Network. He previously worked for WGN Radio, NBC Sports and VSiN. Jayden Daniels' mom criticized by ex-ESPNer after Commanders training camp interview
One ex-ESPN sportscaster thinks Jayden Daniels' mom needs to take a step back. 'She needs a hobby,' former 'SportsCenter' and 'Golic and Wingo' co-host host Trey Wingo posted on X Monday after the Commanders quarterback's mother, Regina Jackson, made a cameo in her son's NFL Network interview at training camp Saturday. Jackson is Daniels' money manager, although not his agent, and the two have an extremely close relationship. 'She's a mom first, and she's always going to be there to uplift me but if I'm doing wrong, she's gonna let me know,' Daniels said in the NFL Network interview with Jackson standing behind him. 'Even though I'm 24 years old, I'm still a grown man but I still gotta listen to my mom at some point.' Jackson went on to say: 'I'm very proud of him. The athlete, the man you guys see and you always need your mommas around, so.' When asked if she's at Commanders training camp each day, Jackson said she wasn't, quipping: 'Trust me, they'll tell you when I'm here.' 3 Jayden Daniels' mother, Regina Jackson, with her son in an interview on NFL Network. @nflnetwork/X That exchange was enough to elicit the post from Wingo, which received 29,000 likes but plenty of pushback. 'I promise this is not what you want, Trey,' said one user on X in a response that received 953 likes. 3 Former ESPN co-host Trey Wingo on April 24, 2019. 'But when one has a clear image, great reputation and has a close relationship with a parent, suddenly we don't want that. Odd isn't it?' 'Seems like a mother and her son get along,' posted a third. Terry McLaurin had been a full participant in the Washington Commanders voluntary offseason program, but that changed Wednesday when he was not present for the first time.
The Washington Commanders have made it clear they are in win-now mode, hoping to capitalize on the years of contention available through Jayden Daniels' rookie contract. They have been aggressive this offseason to lock in pieces that will keep them among the top teams in the NFC. A core that went to their first NFC Championship in decades has added Deebo Samuel, Laremy Tunsil and some enticing rookies to the lineup. Advertisement Washington has done the job of adding the external talent to make their team stronger. Now, they must apply this aggression to the other stars in-house. The Commanders and star receiver Terry McLaurin had started preliminary talks on a contract extension in March, per general manager Adam Peters. There has not been much to update on that front, until a major change on Wednesday. McLaurin was reportedly not present at the team's offseason programs for the first time, per FOX Sports' Jordan Shultz. As of now, the exact reason of his absence is not known though the matter of his extension are likely in play here. Phase 3 of the Commanders program gets started next week, so the details of the decision will not remain in the dark for long. If pertaining to his extension, it appears McLaurin, who enters the final year of his contract in 2025, is finally taking his stance to get things moving on the timeline. Advertisement McLaurin has proven one of the league's most consistent receivers, continuing the strong output from the ugly years before Daniels' arrival. He has totaled over 1,000 yards in the last five seasons, including a 1,096-yard tally from 2024 that included 82 catches and 13 touchdowns. His number in terms of his average salary will likely fall in the mid-to-high 30s. Ja'Marr Chase has the most expensive non-quarterback contract in the league currently at $40 million per year. Justin Jefferson and CeeDee Lamb follow behind at $35 and $34 million respectively. Given his production, that could be a close estimate for the Commanders' No. 1. McLaurin has kept his head down and worked through some dark years for the Commanders. He remains central to their plans of having an elite offense around Daniels for years to come, so a deal is most likely on its way in the future. Advertisement For now though, the uncertainty around that contract is beginning to swell. Commanders Schedule Threatens Jayden Sophomore Slump with NFC East Sandwich
It's not an understatement to say that Jayden Daniels' impact on the Washington Commanders last year was one of the more staggering of any rookie quarterback in league history. Daniels became the start of a team that won just four games in 2023, and led the organization all the way to the conference title game for the first time in over 30 years. Advertisement That doesn't just happen. The Commanders have a special signal-caller on their roster. But as great as Daniels was in 2024, there is some looming concern. The famous "sophomore slump" has hurt many promising rookies going into their second year in the league as teams make adjustments. Let's take a look at the slate ... W1: Giants W2: @ Packers (TNF) W3: Raiders W4: @ Falcons W5: @ Chargers (4:25) W6: Bears (MNF) W7: @ Cowboys (4:25) W8: @ Chiefs (MNF) W9: Seahawks (SNF) W10: Lions (4:25) W11: @ Dolphins (Madrid) W12: BYE W13: Broncos (SNF) W14: @ Vikings W15: @ Giants W16: Eagles (Saturday) W17: Cowboys (Christmas Day) Advertisement W18: @ Eagles (TBD) Is there a sophomore slump in there? Well, there is darn sure a problematic stretch or two. ... maybe most notably in crunch time of the season. Check out the season-ending NFC East Sandwich. ... Philly, Dallas, Philly. Washington has brought plenty of talent into the roster to make sure their franchise quarterback does not go through that famous slump. With so much talent on the roster, it doesn't appear Daniels is in any danger yet. But that Sandwich awaits. Bills, NFC East to be featured on 'Hard Knocks' in 2025 NFL season
The offseason edition of "Hard Knocks" won't air in 2025, but the usual training camp version, along with the in-season edition of the show, will air again this year. The Buffalo Bills will be featured in the training camp version of "Hard Knocks," while the NFC East will be the featured division in the in-season edition of the show, the league announced Wednesday. This will mark the first time that the Bills have been featured on the long-running HBO show, which is also produced by NFL Films. It also marks the first time that a team that made the playoffs in the season prior will be featured in the training camp version of "Hard Knocks" since 2013. In recent years, the NFL has had trouble getting teams to volunteer to be a part of the show, with teams that made the postseason in the previous year getting an exemption from being forced onto the show. As a result, the NFL changed the rules on which teams could be forced to appear on the training camp version of "Hard Knocks" at the league meetings earlier this offseason. Teams can't be forced to appear on the training camp version of "Hard Knocks" if they have a first-year head coach, if they're not a member of the division to be featured in "Hard Knocks: In Season" for such upcoming season or a member of the division to be featured in the immediately subsequent season, and hasn't been featured in "Hard Knocks: Training Camp" in the previous eight seasons. The 2025 season is shaping up to be another pivotal one for the Bills. Josh Allen had a career year in 2024, winning MVP for the first time in his career. However, their season ended at the hands of the Kansas City Chiefs for the fourth time in five years, losing in the AFC Championship Game. As for the in-season version of "Hard Knocks," this marks the second straight year that edition of the show will feature a division instead of a team. Last season, the AFC North was the featured division on "Hard Knocks: In Season." The NFC East is arguably the most discussed division in all of football. Of course, the Philadelphia Eagles will be seeking to repeat as Super Bowl champions in 2025. The Washington Commanders will also look to have another strong year as they're trying to build off the momentum from Jayden Daniels' rookie season, where they lost to the Eagles in the NFC Championship Game. The Dallas Cowboys, meanwhile, are seeking a bounce-back season in 2025. Dak Prescott struggled in the first half of the 2024 season before hamstring surgery cut his year short. Dallas will also be guided by first-year coach Brian Schottenheimer, with wide receiver George Pickens being among its notable additions. Finally, the New York Giants will also enter a pivotal year in 2025, but for a different reason than the Bills. General manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll are likely fighting for their jobs this upcoming season following two straight miserable years. The Giants remade their quarterback room this offseason to try and spark their team for 2025, signing Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston before using a first-round pick on Jaxson Dart. The season premiere of "Hard Knocks: Training Camp with the Buffalo Bills" will be on Aug. 5. "Hard Knocks: In Season with the NFC East" will premiere in December.
