Commanders Hitting Over Hinges On Jayden Daniels' Sophomore Success

This time last summer, Las Vegas bookmakers had plenty of questions about the Washington Commanders — and it made sense why.
The team moved on from veteran head coach Ron Rivera, brought in a brand-new staff and drafted LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels with the second overall pick.
Their season win total was set at [O/U] 6.5 games.
All the Commanders did was ride Daniels to a 12-5 record, a road playoff win over the top-seeded Detroit Lions and a berth in the NFC Championship Game against the eventual world champion Philadelphia Eagles.
Washington was two bad quarters away from the Super Bowl.
The question now is, can they run it back?
It's a polarizing question in the betting markets, where the Commanders are totaled at [O/U] 9.5 wins with prices as low as 2/1 to win the NFC East and 9/1 to win the conference.
They're also favored (-145) to make the playoffs.
Washington will need Daniels to avoid the ol' Year 2 regression and it feels paramount that the team successfully navigates wideout Terry McLaurin's recent trade request . McLaurin has surpassed 1,000 receiving yards in five straight seasons, and he caught a career-best 13 touchdowns last year.
"There's urgency to sign Terry," a source near the Commanders told me. "He's their best playmaker and one of the best deep threats in the NFL. They're trying to build around Daniels the way Baltimore did with Lamar Jackson."

We'll see if both sides can reach an agreement.
Daniels is the unquestioned headliner after completing 69% of his passes for 3,500 yards and 25 touchdowns as a rookie. He rushed for almost 900 yards and added six more scores on the ground, too.
People gush over his instincts and decision-making skills.
"They do a lot of virtual reality drills with him behind closed doors at super speed," the source continued. "When they challenge him mentally, they get more out of him. They know he'll be ready to go physically.
"It's tough to find anyone in that building who thinks last year was a fluke."
Respect for Daniels is no different among bettors and bookmakers, either. Only Jackson, Joe Burrow, Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes have shorter odds to win league MVP at sportsbooks across the United States.
The hype is real.

I'm hesitant to say the Commanders will match last year's surprise playoff run and expectations are understandably different when you're trying to sustain success. But offseason additions like Deebo Samuel, Laremy Tunsil, Von Miller and Javon Kinlaw provide optimism for double-digit victories.
It'll also help if Washington converts close to 79% of its fourth-down conversions , a success rate that led the league a year ago.
Assuming McLaurin returns to the fold, I like Washington's Over.

Steelers rookie earns passing grade for preseason Week 1 performance originally appeared on The Sporting News After months of waiting to see the Steelers back on the field, fans were treated to a preseason opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars last weekend. The Steelers escaped Jacksonville with a 31-25 win. Of course, wins and losses don't matter in the preseason, but it's always nice to see a notch in the win column regardless. More importantly, several young players had solid performances in the opener. Wide receiver Max Hurleman, defensive back D'Shawn Jamison, and quarterback Skylar Thompson were among the biggest winners for the Steelers, as those three players helped their case to make the roster. One player who will undoubtedly make the roster no matter what is first-round pick Derrick Harmon. Harmon was selected by the Steelers with the No. 21 pick in the 2025 draft, and the expectation is that the Oregon product will make an impact immediately. Chris Trapasso of CBS Sports recently graded the performance of each first round pick in preseason Week 1. Harmon received a "B-" grade from Trapasso after collecting two pressures in 22 pass-rushing snaps. Regarding Harmon's debut, Trapasso offered the following: No tackles for the Steelers rookie defensive lineman in his first preseason game. But he was drafted to mostly get after the quarterback, and he disrupted twice on 22 pass-rushing snaps. While that may seem like a low rate, if you're anywhere around 10% in the NFL as an interior rusher you're really doing something right. As Trapasso mentioned, Harmon didn't exactly light up the stat sheet. The first-rounder didn't collect a tackle, but he got after the passer a couple times and that's what he was drafted to do. Sure, it would have been nice to see Harmon get a couple tackles or a sack, but it was his first game experience in the NFL. Harmon will likely get some more snaps in the next two preseason games as the team looks to get him geared up for the regular season. As it currently stands, Harmon is slated to start on the defensive line alongside Keeanu Benton and Cameron Heyward. This means that the rookie will have some solid veteran mentors to learn behind as gets accustomed to the NFL. In college, Harmon had no problem filling up the stat sheet. In 2024, Harmon racked up 45 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, and five sacks. If the Steelers can get more pass rush from the interior with Harmon, the rookie could be one of the steals of the first round.

Ward solid in NFL preseason debut, leading one scoring drive in Titans' 29-7 loss to Buccaneers
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Cam Ward's pro debut was solid, if unspectacular. The first overall pick in this year's NFL draft completed five of eight passes for 67 yards, but more importantly was composed and looked comfortable running Tennessee's offense in the Titans' 29-7 preseason-opening loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Saturday night. Two days after working against the Bucs defense in a joint practice at Tampa Bay's training facility, Ward played two offensive series, including an impressive second-quarter touchdown drive that gave the Titans a glimpse of what the franchise is counting on to be a bright future with him at quarterback. The 6-foot-2, 219-pound rookie completed three passes to Calvin Ridley to account for all but 15 yards on the 11-play, 65-yard TD drive Tony Pollard finished with a 1-yard scoring run. That came after the Tennessee offense spent more than 14 minutes of the opening quarter on the sideline while Tampa Bay was building a 10-0 lead and a whopping 143-5 advantage in total yardage while running 22 plays to Tennessee's 3. 'I thought Cam played well, the two series that he got,' Titans second-year coach Brian Callahan said. 'It was kind of a weird first half with three possessions. He had one three and out, then came back with a touchdown drive. He started to feel comfortable and was begging to go back in, but that was not in the cards tonight.' Ward felt good about the abbreviated debut. 'It was a lot guys first time playing together, but it felt good to come up with points,' after failing to move the ball on the Titans' first possession," the rookie said. 'I wanted to go out for a third (series) ... but Coach Callahan has a plan for us," Ward conceded. 'We'll stick to his plan." Ward began his team's only scoring drive with a 27-yard completion over the middle to a wide-open Ridley and later led his target cutting across the middle again with a nice throw for a 13-yard gain into Tampa Bay territory. The rookie got away with his worst throw of the night when Bucs cornerback Josh Hayes made a nice adjustment on a sideline throw intended for receiver Elic Ayomanor but was unable to hang on to the ball for an interception. Ward, who had no turnovers and was not sacked, left the game after getting the Titans into the end zone. Backup Brandon Allen and third-stringer Tim Boyle, who threw an interception that was returned for a late touchdown, shared playing time the rest of the way. With Baker Mayfield and the rest of Tampa Bay's regulars either given the night off or playing sparingly, Kyle Trask started at quarterback for the Bucs. While he's listed No. 2 on the depth chart behind Mayfield, the team has signed 32-year-old Teddy Bridgewater as potential insurance for the four-time defending NFC South champions. Trask, who's thrown just 11 regular-season passes since entering the NFL as a second-round draft pick in 2021, led the team to Sean Tucker's 2-yard TD run and two field goals in the first half. He completed 12 of 16 passes for 129 yards without an interception before being replaced by rookie free agent Connor Bazelak. 'I thought he played very well. He made some timely throws down the field. He was poised in the pocket," Bucs coach Todd Bowles said. 'Practice wasn't as sharp the past week, but he played well in the game.' Good first impression First-round draft pick Emeka Egbuka started at wide receiver for the Bucs with Mike Evans resting and the team's other star veteran, Chris Godwin, still recovering from an injury that sidelined him much of last season. Egbuka had one catch — a leaping grab in tight coverage — for 21 yards. Injuries Titans: NT T'Vondre Sweat did not play after having his tonsils removed. ... ILB Anfernee Orji also missed the game after injuring a knee during Thursday's joint practice against the Bucs. Buccaneers: RB Rachaad White (groin) and WR Dennis Houston (groin) left the game in the first quarter and did not return. Up next Titans: Remain on the road for another week, moving on to Atlanta for two joint practices followed by a game Aug. 15 against the Falcons.
