Argentine tegus are rare, but they've been seen in Alabama. Have you spotted one?

A new slithering species has been spotted in Alabama, adding to the state's already rich reptile population. Though only spotted once so far, the Argentine tegu has entered Alabama. But what exactly is an Argentine tegu, and does it pose any threat? Here's what we know: The tegu is a large, invasive, commonly black and white lizard from Argentina. They can grow up to 4 feet long and weighing 10 pounds or more, according to Georgia Wildlife. Unlike some other lizards, the tegu rarely climbs more than a few feet off the ground, but they are strong swimmers. From late fall and through the winter months, tegus head into burrows for a hibernation-type period known as brumation to avoid freezing temperatures. They usually breed in the spring and typically lay 35 eggs per year which have a 60-day incubation. They may live up to 20 years. The University of Georgia runs an interactive map with detailed info about tegus in Alabama. Over the last few years, there has been one report coming out of Tallapoosa, Ala. from a private landowner. The tegu was reported in June 2022, accompanied by a photograph showing the lizard measuring over two feet in length and missing half of its tail. Although not considered aggressive toward people, tegus will defend themselves if threatened, according to Georgia Wildlife. They can react fast and lash with their tails. They also have sharp teeth and claws and strong jaws. Tegus also represent a natural threat because they have few predators and can multiple quickly. They eat the eggs of ground-nesting birds—including quail and turkeys—and other reptiles like the American alligator and gopher tortoise which are protected species. They will also eat chicken eggs, fruit, vegetables, plants, pet food, carrion and small live animals. As of October 15, 2020, all species of tegu are prohibited by law in the state of Alabama due to "ecological, economic, and human health and safety concerns related to potential impacts of nonnative animals in Alabama." This ban makes it illegal to possess, sell, import or release tegus within the state. If you spot a tegu in Alabama, contact the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources by calling (334) 242-3469. Suspected illegal possession can be reported through Operation GameWatch at 1-800-272-4263. Contributing: Miguel Legoas of the Deep South Connect Team Georgia contributed to this article. What animals are illegal to own in Alabama? Here's what the penalty could be if caught

Macon County, Ala. authorities responded to a two-car crash on Interstate 85 Wednesday morning caused by a furry, hopping marsupial. A kangaroo escaped its enclosure from a nearby resident, who kept it as a pet for a local petting zoo. While it's not common to spot these Australian natives in Alabama, their non-native status in the state makes them illegal to own as pets. What other animals are prohibited to keep as pets in Alabama? Here's what we know: The state has banned the possession, sale or release of dozens of animals and fish that officials say could harm local ecosystems or pose risk to people. The list includes notorious species like walking catfish, black carp and venomous snakes not naturally found in Alabama. It also covers animals already listed as dangerous under federal law. The regulations aim to protect Alabama's native ecosystems from environmental damage and threats to public safety. In Alabama, it is illegal to own or transport animals unless you are a licensed game breeder or have a special permit such as: Tegu Mongooses Jackrabbits San Juan rabbits Deer Elk Coyotes Raccoons Foxes Skunks Bobcats Wild pigs Wild turkey Mountain lion Bears Kangaroos Nonindigenous venomous reptiles Protected wild birds The law even covers releasing non-native species of seafood into public waters. You must also have written permission from the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources to intentionally stock or release seafood into the waters they originate from. There are exceptions for farmers raising turkeys for personal use and for accredited research or wildlife rehab centers, but only with written permission from the state. In Alabama, there are significant penalties if you are caught possessing or importing a banned animal. There are fines up to $5,000 and jail time of up to 30 days as it is a Class C misdemeanor. Third major meteor shower of the year to peak early next week. Will you see it in Alabama?

A celestial show is coming to the skies, and it could be worth staying up late for. The Eta Aquarids, the third major meteor shower of the year, will peak early next week. While it's known for putting on a spectacular display in the Southern Hemisphere, stargazers worldwide, including in Alabama, may still catch some of the action. Will the skies over Alabama cooperate for the show? Here's what we know: The Eta Aquarid meteor shower comes from tiny bits of Halley's Comet. As Earth moves through the dusty trail left behind by the Comet, those particles slam into our atmosphere and burn up, creating fast, fiery streaks in the sky. Halley's Comet only passes Earth about once every 76 years, but it still puts on a show. It was last seen in 1986. The Eta Aquarids will peak between May 5 and May 6. The best time to watch is after 2:24 a.m., when the radiant rises, until dawn. After the peak, the show dims quickly, so don't wait. Look toward the constellation Aquarius, where the meteors will appear to shoot from. Time and Date offers a daily updated table and an interactive Meteor Shower Sky Map to help you track the radiant and pick the best time to head outside for the show. The forecast is in your favor. The National Weather Service predicts clear skies and a crisp evening low of 55 degrees, ideal conditions for catching the meteor shower. Watching these celestial events in areas free from city and streetlights is ideal. NASA advises lying flat on your back with your feet facing east, allowing your eyes 30 minutes to adjust to the dark for the best view of the meteors.
