Commanders' Jer'Zhan Newton: 'I didn't know I had a strip sack until I stood up'
The Washington Commanders faced the New England Patriots at Gillette Stadium on Friday in their first preseason game of 2025. It didn't go well for the Commanders as they walked away with a 48-18 loss, but defensive lineman Jer'Zhan Newton had the Commanders' only sack on Friday, and he didn't even know it. "Yeah, I'm not gonna lie, I didn't know I had a strip sack until I stood up and Drake Maye was fumbling the ball, bobbling the ball around. That's when I knew I had a strip sack, I thought he had it actually, and he was like, "Nah, it was you." So that's pretty cool. I don't come out here stat chasing, I just do whatever I can to help the team win, but to start off the season like that is pretty cool." Definitely a cool way to start the season, especially for the second-year lineman who is looking for a spot in the rotation. Right now, Newton sits behind Javon Kinlaw on the depth chart with Deatrich Wise as the other tackle. But if Newton continues to show his explosiveness and continues to get to the quarterback, he could absolutely see an increased role in 2025.
