Inside Ranking Commanders' Top Five Young Prospects for Stardom
There is a big difference between how the NFL handles its young prospects and other leagues like the NHL or MLB. Both baseball and hockey have minor leagues, developmental leagues, in which their young players can learn the game at their own pace.

The NFL doesn't afford itself or its prospects that luxury. In this league, either the young prospects show something almost immediately, or they don't end up playing at all.
And the next thing you know, they're in the UFL or the CFL. Or they become doctors or Uber drivers or lawyers or shoe salesmen.
In baseball and hockey, it's common for each team to have a ranking of its minor-legue prospects.
Let's do the same exercise here as we'll rank Washington's top prospects under the age of 25, similar to how baseball or hockey runs their rankings. ... with the idea being all about the Commanders' top five candidates for stardom.

5. Josh Conerly Washington's first-round pick from the 2025 draft is a tackle who should be the future anchor of the entire offensive line. The Oregon prospect is raw but has the potential to be very good, wherever he ends up playing.
4. Jer'Zhan Newton Newton was one of multiple second-round picks from the 2024 draft and is about to see a significant increase in playing time following the offseason departure of Jonathan Allen. His rank could increase with a big year ahead.
3. Quan Martin Martin has been an underrated player in Washington's secondary, but continues to improve as one of the brightest safeties in the game. Another year in coach Dan Quinn's scheme could do wonders.
2. Mike Sainristil Sainristil was another player who stood out in his rookie season with Washington. ... almost in a Jayden Daniels-level way. The Michigan product will only get better in a division full of receiving stars as he will take on their challenge and we bet win his share.

1. Jayden Daniels There isn't any other viable answer other than Daniels for the No. 1 slot. While he turns 25 in December, Washington's signal-caller is one of the bright young stars - yes, he's already there - in the league today.
So in Jayden's case, this is about more than an ascent toward "stardom.'' Let's call it "superstardom.''

CFP committee adding weight to games against strong opponents, limit reward for beating weak foes
The College Football Playoff selection committee announced Wednesday it will place more emphasis on strength of schedule this year when determining which teams make the 12-team field. The committee said in a statement that the schedule strength metric has been adjusted to apply greater weight to games against strong opponents. An additional metric, record strength, has been added to go beyond a team's schedule strength to assess how a team performed against that schedule. 'This metric rewards teams defeating high-quality opponents while minimizing the penalty for losing to such a team,' the committee said. 'Conversely, these changes will provide minimal reward for defeating a lower-quality opponent while imposing a greater penalty for losing to such a team.' The adjustment to the evaluation process comes after some in the Southeastern Conference complained about last season's inclusion of — at the time of selections — an 11-2 SMU of the Atlantic Coast Conference over a 9-3 Alabama or even a 9-3 South Carolina or 9-3 Mississippi. SMU's losses were to an unranked BYU and a ranked Clemson in the ACC championship game. Alabama had bad losses against Vanderbilt and Oklahoma, both .500 at the time, but also had wins over a second-ranked Georgia, No. 21 Missouri and No. 14 LSU. Prompted by concerns about how teams that don't play in conference championship games are judged, the committee reviewed the movement of idle teams from the second-to-last ranking to final ranking. The selection committee reaffirmed that movement in the final week should be evidence-based and did not recommend creating a formal policy prohibiting such movement. The committee also updated its policy on recusal of selection committee members. A member will be fully recused from the evaluation of a team if he or she receives direct compensation from the school in question or has an immediate family member who is a football player, football staff member or senior administrator at the school. A fully recused member is not allowed to participate in any deliberations or vote concerning that school. A member will be partially recused if he or she has a secondary relationship with the school in question, such as an immediate family member employed by the institution but outside of the football program or senior administration. A partially recused member may remain present and participate in discussions related to the team in question but is not allowed to participate in votes involving the team. The selection committee will release its five weekly Top 25 rankings on Nov. 4. Orioles closer Félix Bautista undergoes rotator cuff, labrum surgery, expected to miss 12 months
Baltimore Orioles closer Félix Bautista will miss the rest of the 2025 MLB season after undergoing rotator cuff and labrum surgery, the team announced Wednesday. Bautista, 30, was in the midst of another strong season when he was placed on the Injured List in July due to a shoulder injury. Bautista is expected to miss at least 12 months following the surgery, which means he'll miss most of — if not all of — the 2026 MLB season while rehabbing. It's the second major injury sustained by Bautista during his major-league career. He missed the entire 2024 MLB season while recovering from Tommy John surgery. Bautista was able to return in time for the start of the 2025 MLB season and was out to a great start prior to his injury. Through 34 2/3 innings, Bautista had a 2.60 ERA and 50 strikeouts.
