Young woman dies after alleged attack by boss at 7-Eleven. Police investigate death as homicide

Family members of Jessica McLaughlin — a young woman who they say was violently attacked by her 7-Eleven manager, leaving her on life support — have said their last goodbyes after losing hope for a medical miracle. McLaughlin died in a hospital on Wednesday, eight days after she was attacked at the Los Angeles convenience store, her family said. The Los Angeles Police Department is investigating her death as a homicide and continuing to search for the woman suspected in the deadly assault. The 24-year-old went to work on June 24 at the 7-Eleven store in the 5700 block of Melrose Avenue, Sean McLaughlin said in a GoFundMe post set up to help pay for his sister's funeral expenses. An unidentified manager attacked the young woman inside the store, her family alleges. Police said the incident began as a verbal dispute that escalated into a physical confrontation. Officers responded shortly around 2 p.m. after a report of battery and found an unconscious woman. McLaughlin's manager attacked her after the argument, her family said, based on a witness who saw the attack and spoke to police. "She held her down, sat on top of her, and didn't let her breathe," Sean McLaughlin wrote in the post about the unnamed manager. Clancey McLaughlin told news station KTLA that his daughter's brain was deprived of oxygen for more than 10 minutes. "She's basically declared brain-dead now," he said Monday. He claimed that the suspect bullied his daughter and that she pulled her by the hair as McLaughlin was leaving work on the day of the attack. Her family said McLaughlin collapsed after she was able to get free of her attacker. She told her co-workers to call 911, saying she couldn't breathe. The 911 caller told the Los Angeles Fire Department that McLaughlin was unconscious and someone had performed CPR on her but that she did not revive. She was taken to the hospital in grave condition, according to the LAFD. Her family claims that the manager attempted to delete security camera footage of the confrontation while co-workers were performing CPR and calling for help. The manager fled on her bike, McLaughlin's family alleges. Police have not released a description of the suspect. Detectives have obtained video evidence of the scene but are not sharing it with the public at this time, police said. In a statement, 7-Eleven said the employee involved in the fight had been fired and that it was cooperating with police in their investigation. 'Our hearts are with those impacted during this difficult time," the company said in a statement. McLaughlin's family said she was an innocent victim, according to the GoFundMe post. Her family said she never regained consciousness and suffered severe brain damage due to a lack of oxygen. "Her brain had stopped functioning. After getting second opinions and doing everything we could, we have to make the impossible decision to let her go," Sean McLaughlin said. 7-Eleven worker dies after allegedly being attacked by manager

A 7-Eleven employee in Los Angeles died after allegedly being attacked by her manager, who authorities are searching for, according to local police and the deceased worker's family. Jessica McLaughlin was found unconscious by Los Angeles police on June 24 after patrol officers received a radio call around 2:15 p.m. regarding a felony battery at the convenience store on Melrose Avenue, according to a department news release. McLaughlin, who police said was in her 20s, got into a verbal dispute with another woman inside the 7-Eleven that escalated into a physical altercation, the department stated. Once discovered by police, McLaughlin was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead on July 2. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's Office is in the process of determining McLaughlin's cause and manner of death, police said. More news: Father and son identified as campers found dead at Isle Royale National Park McLaughlin's brother, Sean McLaughlin, created a GoFundMe to cover the costs of his sister's funeral. "Jessica McLaughlin is my sister — but she's so much more than that. She's a daughter, a best friend, and the kind of auntie every kid dreams of having," Sean McLaughlin wrote on the GoFundMe page. "She's been my rock these past five years while we've lived together. She was always there — for me, for our family, and honestly, for anyone who needed her." Sean McLaughlin also described on the GoFundMe page what allegedly transpired on the day of his sister's death, accusing "one of her managers" of "violently and senselessly" attacking her on June 24. The brother alleges his sister's manager "held her down, sat on top of her and didn't let her breathe." "While some coworkers tried to help and stop it, they were attacked too. When she finally got free, she collapsed. She wasn't breathing," Sean McLaughlin wrote on the GoFundMe about his sister. As McLaughlin's coworkers gave her CPR and called for help, the manager "ran to the back room to try and delete the security footage — and then fled the scene on her bike," the brother wrote. Neither the LAPD nor McLaughlin's brother identified the manager allegedly involved in the incident. "This attack should have never happened," Sean McLaughlin wrote. The GoFundMe created by McLaughlin's brother is nearing its $50,000 goal. As of July 3, it has received over $31,000 in donations. "We're trying to give her the goodbye she deserves," Sean McLaughlin wrote on the GoFundMe page. "We want to give her a beautiful service — something that honors who she was and how deeply she was loved." A 7-Eleven spokesperson told KTLA that the company was fully cooperating with the investigation and that the suspect has since been fired. USA TODAY contacted 7-Eleven and Sean McLaughlin on Thursday, July 3, but has not received a response. Jonathan Limehouse covers breaking and trending news for USA TODAY. 7-11 worker, 26, dies after 'manager sat on top of her and cut off air supply'

A 7-11 worker died after her female manager allegedly suffocated her by sitting on top of her in a violent attack. Jessica McLaughlin, 26, died Wednesday morning, days after her family say she was violently assaulted by her boss in a convenience store in Hollywood, California. She suffered traumatic brain injuries after allegedly being set upon by her boss when they got into a heated argument at the end of a shift, her family told KTLA. They said the manager, who has not been named, threw a bottle at McLaughlin, pinned her to the ground then, 'sat on top of her, and didn't let her breathe.' In a GoFundMe set up by her brother, her family claimed that when her coworkers tried to step in and stop it, they were also attacked by the manager. 'When she finally got free, she collapsed. She wasn't breathing,' the fundraiser read. The manager then 'ran to the back room to try and delete the security footage', McLaughlin's family claimed, before fleeing the scene on her bike. The Los Angeles Police Department said they have identified the suspect, but have yet to make an arrest as of Thursday. The manager had already fled by the time they arrived at the scene. The LAPD did not immediately respond to a request for an update on the investigation. McLaughlin suffered brain damage due to a lack of oxygen during the ordea, and was hospitalized for several days before she passed away Wednesday. Her heartbroken family wrote in their fundraiser that they stayed by her side throughout her time in hospital, 'praying for some kind of miracle.' 'But the damage from the lack of oxygen was too much. Her brain had stopped functioning,' they wrote. On Wednesday they made the heart wrenching decision to switch off her life support machine. 'After getting second opinions and doing everything we could, we have to make the impossible decision to let her go,' the family explained. Her father Clancey told KTLA that his daughter was bullied while working at the 7-11, specifically by the manager who is accused of causing her death. A 7-11 spokesperson told the outlet that the company is fully cooperating with the police investigation, and said the suspect was fired. 'Our hearts are with those impacted during this difficult time,' the company said in a statement. McLaughlin's family described her as someone who, 'had a way of making people feel safe, accepted, and loved'. 'You could come to her with anything and know you wouldn't be judged,' their statement read. 'She was the kind of person who rooted for the underdog, who lifted people up when they were down, and who truly saw the good in everyone. 'She had such a beautiful soul and deserved so much better than the way her life was taken from her.' In an update on Wednesday after McLaughlin's family decided to take her off life support, her brother Sean wrote that her family's 'hearts are shattered'.

7-Eleven employee, left brain-dead after manager ‘sat on top of her' in violent attack, dies

Jessica McLaughlin, a 7-Eleven employee, tragically passed away after her manager allegedly sat on top of her during a violent attack on June 24. According to the New York Post, the employee was on life support, and died eight days after the attack. The report stated that McLaughlin was on duty at the convenience store when she was allegedly assaulted by her female manager following an altercation around 2:00 pm. The accused manager, whose identity has not yet been disclosed, held McLaughlin down on the ground and sat on top of her, preventing her from breathing. The onlookers and colleagues attempted to stop her; however, they were left injured. 'Jessica walked into work expecting a normal day. But instead, she was violently and senselessly attacked by one of her managers,' Sean McLaughlin, her brother, said in a GoFundMe created to raise funds for her funeral. 'She (the manager) held her down, sat on top of her, and didn't let her breathe,' her brother alleged. The deceased's father, Clancey McLaughlin, claimed that her brain was deprived of oxygen for more than 10 minutes. 'She's basically declared brain-dead now,' news station KTLA quoted Clancey earlier. McLaughlin collapsed after she managed to free herself. However, she couldn't breathe and asked her colleagues to call 911. Reportedly, a person also performed CPR but could not revive her. She was rushed to Hollywood Presbyterian Hospital in serious condition, where she died eight days after the attack. According to the New York Post, the accused manager allegedly deleted the CCTV footage after the incident. The company later released a statement, promising a thorough probe into the matter. 'Our hearts are with those impacted during this difficult time. The suspect has been terminated, and we continue to fully cooperate with law enforcement in their investigation.'
