White Sox should move dominant starter Adrian Houser at trade deadline
The Chicago White Sox may not be having a good season, but they aren't as bad as they were last year or nearly as bad as the Colorado Rockies this season. At 31-62, the White Sox need to focus on the future and acquire as many assets as possible for veteran players. Centerfielder Luis Robert Jr. has been in trade rumors for years at this point, but Robert hasn't been the same player he was in 2023. Robert is as talented as they get, but he has just eight home runs and 32 RBI while slashing .185/.272/.311 in 75 games this season. The best veteran asset on the White Sox may be right-hander Adrian Houser. Houser, 32, has had a phenomenal season since signing with Chicago on May 20. In his first start against the Seattle Mariners, Houser pitched six shutout innings in a 1-0 win. Follow The Sporting News on WhatsApp Through nine starts, Houser is 5-2 with a 1.56 ERA and a 1.13 WHIP. He has three straight winning decisions against the San Francisco Giants, Colorado Rockies and Toronto Blue Jays. Houser went seven innings allowing just one run on seven hits and two walks against Toronto on Wednesday. With the trade deadline just three weeks away, former Major League Baseball executive and current writer for The Athletic Jim Bowden answered 25 trade deadline questions, including one about a return for Houser. 'The return in a Houser trade would likely be two mid-level prospects with some risk and possible reward,' wrote Bowden. Two mid-level prospects don't sound like a lot, but it could be and the White Sox would be cashing in on a guy who hasn't been good in three years. More MLB:

Tigers 'make a lot of sense' in trade for $275 million All-Star third baseman
The MLB trade deadline presents an opportunity for the Detroit Tigers to shore up the roster for a deep postseason run. While the team is expected to pursue more relievers, the team is also being linked to a third baseman at the deadline. For Jim Bowden of The Athletic, the Tigers could "make a ton of sense" for a third baseman from the St. Louis Cardinals. Bowden thinks a Nolan Arenado trade with the Tigers could work for both sides. "The Cardinals could still move Nolan Arenado and be willing to pay down his contract," Bowden writes, "a team like the Tigers makes a lot of sense in that scenario because St. Louis could include a reliever in the deal as well." It's an interesting scenario from Bowden. The Tigers could land Arenado, one of the game's best third basemen, and a reliever from the Cardinals in a trade deadline blockbuster. While Arenado isn't up to his usual performance, hitting just .241 with a .680 OPS, he'd still be a solid pickup for the Tigers. Those numbers aren't terrible, but they are below-average. But, as Bowden mentions, the Tigers could also add a reliever in this deal. Ryan Helsley is the Cardinals' top option, though combined with Arenado, it might be too steep a price for the Tigers to pay. MORE: Tigers 'strongly interested' in pair of Twins righty relievers Phil Maton or Steven Matz are the more likely relievers that could be included in a deal like this. Arenado and a reliever would cost the Tigers a lot, but it'd plug two holes on the roster: reliever and third base. In this scenario, the Cardinals would pick up some of Arenado's remaining contract. He signed through the 2027 season on a huge $275 million deal. While the Tigers wouldn't be on the hook for all of the remaining salary, it'd still be a huge investment. The ten-time Gold Glove winner and six-time Platinum Glove winner would be a great addition to the Tigers' roster. He'd improve the defense at third base, and also could provide a spark in the lineup. However, there's a huge requirement for any deal with Areando: he needs to waive his no-trade clause. He has control over where he goes, and if he doesn't want to head to Detroit, then he can nix any deal that he's involved in. While Bowden thinks an Arenado to Detroit trade makes a lot of sense, Arenado could see it differently and shut down such a deal before it can cross the finish line. MORE MLB NEWS: Padres' A.J. Red Sox actively trying to cut ties with All-Star as deadline nears
The Boston Red Sox have turned their season around and have put themselves in a position to be buyers at next week's trade deadline. Unlike many buyers, they have an All-Star on their roster they can trade. The Red Sox outfield is crowded, and Jarren Duran has a case to be the odd man out. Roman Anthony is the top prospect in baseball, Ceddanne Rafaela is already signed to an extension, and Wilyer Abreu is younger and has more club control than Duran. The Athletic's Jim Bowden revealed that the Red Sox are actively trying to move Duran. "The Red Sox have been discussing Jarren Duran with several teams — not because they necessarily want to trade him but because they like the outfield of Wilyer Abreu in right, Ceddanne Rafaela in center and Roman Anthony in left field, and Duran should not be a full-time DH at his age," wrote Bowden. "If the Red Sox trade him, it will be for a starting pitcher and perhaps a first baseman if they can find the right deal." Duran was named an All-Star last year, but his numbers have declined this season. However, he would still be an upgrade for some teams looking for outfield upgrades. He has a .257/.322/.427 slash line with 10 triples and eight home runs. He is under contract through 2028, so he will not be cheap for any team looking to add him. However, one contender in most need of an outfielder, the San Diego Padres, does not match up well with the Red Sox in a trade."The Padres and Phillies would love to land Duran," wrote Bowden. "However, the Padres really don't match up with Boston unless the Sox would take a pitcher on an expiring contract, like Dylan Cease or Michael King, or perhaps they could try a three-way trade with the Marlins where Boston would land Edward Cabrera from Miami, the Padres would get Duran and the Marlins would get prospects from both Boston and San Diego. The Sox are building for the short- and long-term." More MLB:

MLB insider suggests bold New York Mets trade idea that sees club give up top 10 prospect for pair of impact relievers
If the New York Mets want to reach the World Series in October, they need more impact arms in their bullpen. An MLB insider recently offered up a bold trade idea for the club to get a pair of them. But the cost could be a top 10 prospect. The Mets have a lot of things going for them. They have a formidable lineup. And a starting staff that has been one of the best in baseball despite not being at full strength all year. However, one obvious weak spot is their bullpen. The Athletic's MLB insider Jim Bowden offered an interesting trade idea this week that sees New York acquire a pair of talented relievers in one deal. 'The Mets are going to be in a dogfight all season with the Phillies. And in their rear-view mirror, the Braves could start creeping closer and closer,' Bowden wrote. 'To prevail in the NL East or secure a wild-card spot, the Mets need to improve their bullpen depth at the deadline. In this trade proposal, they would land the Rockies' two best high-leverage relievers, Bird and Halvorsen. Related: 'Bird has had the better season statistically (2.06 ERA in 33 appearances, 11.5 strikeouts per nine innings). But Halvorsen has more upside, and with the help of the Mets' pitching and analytics departments, might develop into an impact closer in time. Bird, 29, is under team control through 2028; Halvorsen, 25, through 2030.' Getting a pair of difference-making relievers, and one that could potentially replace Edwin Diaz down the line, is a very beneficial deal for New York. But what will be the cost? Bowden believes it would take the Mets sending prospects Drew Gilbert and Chris Suero to finalize a deal. Gilbert's name may be familiar to Mets fans. He was the player the team was willing to pay the rest of Justin Verlander's contract to get in a trade with the Astros in 2023. The Triple-A prospect is ranked as the ninth best in the system on The outfielder has a slash line of .238/.346/.383/.729 with six homers, 32 RBIs, and 34 runs mostly in Triple-A this season. MLB execs reveal which Seattle Mariners top prospect is likely to be traded
The Seattle Mariners are poised to be buyers at the MLB trade deadline, hoping to land pieces to upgrade the lineup in the middle of a playoff hunt. For that to happen, many MLB executives believe one of Seattle's top prospects will be traded. Jim Bowden of The Athletic polled executives around the league about which top MLB prospects are likeliest to be moved this summer at the MLB trade deadline. Mariners prospect Harry Ford was voted the second likeliest to be dealt. Advertisement Related: Seattle Mariners' switch-pitcher to play in All-Star Futures Game 'Ford was mentioned second-most by a considerable margin. Most of those execs believed that, because of the Cal Raleigh's long-term contract, Ford is the most valuable and expendable prospect in Seattle's strong farm system. The Mariners are looking for a corner infield power bat, and it would make sense to dangle Ford, who was the No. 12 pick in the 2021 MLB Draft. He is batting .307/.421/.473 with nine homers and 46 RBIs this season in Triple A.' Jim Bowden on the Seattle mariners potentially trading Henry Ford Ford, age 22, was the 12th overall pick in the 2021 MLB Draft. He's currently rated by as the fifth-best prospect in the Mariners' farm system and the 56th-best prospect in all of baseball. The 5-foot-10 catcher is performing very well at the plate this season with Triple-A Tacoma. Through his first 233 at-bats, Ford boasts an .877 OPS with a .305/.418/.477 triple-slash line, collecting 43 RBIs and 71 hits in 65 games. Related: Mariners insider names 2 positions club targeting at trade deadline However, Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh is under team control through 2033 and is providing All-Star production at the plate with Gold Glove-caliber defense behind it. There's no viable spot for Ford, making him expendable for Seattle. Advertisement He could certainly be of interest to teams like the Colorado Rockies, Washington Nationals, Cleveland Guardians, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Oakland Athletics. The Mariners are known to be targeting a power-hitting corner infielder, and Ford's potential availability could net them a middle-of-the-order bat under team control for multiple seasons.
