MLB insider suggests bold New York Mets trade idea that sees club give up top 10 prospect for pair of impact relievers

Yahoo19-07-2025
If the New York Mets want to reach the World Series in October, they need more impact arms in their bullpen. An MLB insider recently offered up a bold trade idea for the club to get a pair of them. But the cost could be a top 10 prospect.
The Mets have a lot of things going for them. They have a formidable lineup. And a starting staff that has been one of the best in baseball despite not being at full strength all year. However, one obvious weak spot is their bullpen. The Athletic's MLB insider Jim Bowden offered an interesting trade idea this week that sees New York acquire a pair of talented relievers in one deal.
'The Mets are going to be in a dogfight all season with the Phillies. And in their rear-view mirror, the Braves could start creeping closer and closer,' Bowden wrote. 'To prevail in the NL East or secure a wild-card spot, the Mets need to improve their bullpen depth at the deadline. In this trade proposal, they would land the Rockies' two best high-leverage relievers, Bird and Halvorsen.

'Bird has had the better season statistically (2.06 ERA in 33 appearances, 11.5 strikeouts per nine innings). But Halvorsen has more upside, and with the help of the Mets' pitching and analytics departments, might develop into an impact closer in time. Bird, 29, is under team control through 2028; Halvorsen, 25, through 2030.'
Getting a pair of difference-making relievers, and one that could potentially replace Edwin Diaz down the line, is a very beneficial deal for New York. But what will be the cost? Bowden believes it would take the Mets sending prospects Drew Gilbert and Chris Suero to finalize a deal.
Gilbert's name may be familiar to Mets fans. He was the player the team was willing to pay the rest of Justin Verlander's contract to get in a trade with the Astros in 2023. The Triple-A prospect is ranked as the ninth best in the system on MLB.com. The outfielder has a slash line of .238/.346/.383/.729 with six homers, 32 RBIs, and 34 runs mostly in Triple-A this season.

The 'Folk Hero' is back: Veteran kicker Nick Folk signs with the Jets

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — The Folk Hero is back in The Big Apple. Veteran kicker Nick Folk signed with the New York Jets on Tuesday, reuniting with the franchise for which he played for seven seasons from 2010 through 2016. The 40-year-old Folk will compete with rookie Harrison Mevis for the kicking job this season for new head coach Aaron Glenn and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. Rookie Caden Davis, who was competing with Mevis, was waived by New York earlier in the day. 'Listen, he is a very established kicker in this league,' Glenn said of Folk. 'When you go back and you look at his stats from the last couple of years, man, they've been above board. And I've said this from the beginning: Anybody that can help us win games, man, we're going to take a look at that.' Folk was nicknamed 'Folk Hero' during his first stint with the Jets for his ability to make crucial kicks, particularly during the second of New York's consecutive runs to the AFC championship game under Rex Ryan in the 2010 season. His 729 points rank second on the Jets' franchise list, trailing only Pat Leahy (1,470). In 104 games with New York, Folk was 175 of 213 on field-goal attempts (82.2%) and 204 of 206 on extra points. 'I'm happy that he chose us, all right,' Glenn said, 'to be a part of what we're trying to do.' Folk kicked the last two seasons for Tennessee, which chose to move on from him in the offseason when the Titans signed Joey Slye. Folk previously played four years for New England, where he had a career resurgence. He was a sixth-round draft pick of Dallas in 2007 out of Arizona and was selected to the Pro Bowl as a rookie. After three years with the Cowboys, he signed a free agent deal with the Jets in 2010. His 56-yard field goal that season set a franchise that has since been eclipsed. Folk booted a 32-yarder with 3 seconds left to beat Indianapolis in the AFC wild-card round. Folk signed with Tampa Bay as a free agent in 2017 and struggled with an injury before being released. He was out of football until signing with Arizona of the Alliance of American Football in 2019. In other roster moves Tuesday, the Jets signed running back Lawrance Toafili and offensive lineman Liam Fornadel and waived/injured center Gus Hartwig, who left practice Monday with a knee injury. ___ AP NFL:

In both of those years, the team underperformed and that led to the two sides parting ways this offseason. Now, the future Hall of Fame quarterback is a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Shockingly, Rodgers and the Jets will not have to wait long to face off against each other. New York and the Steelers will play in Week 1. Both sides will be out to prove something. Rodgers will want to show that the Jets made a mistake by giving up on him, while New York will be looking to prove that without him, they can get back to being a playoff-caliber contender. Read more: Chicago Bears Connected as Suitor in Micah Parsons Trade Scenario Will McDonald, one of New York's pass rushers, is hoping to sack his former quarterback. "I always wanted to sack Rodgers from when I was a little let me not say that cause as a little kid I wasn't even interested in playing football. I did watch him though, I watched him a lot," McDonald said. There could not be a clearer warning for Rodgers. He is going to be facing a team that wants to make him fail. The Jets want to defeat him and prove that they made the right decision to move away from Rodgers and bring in Justin Fields to replace him. During the 2024 NFL season, Rodgers proved that he still has good football left in him. He completed 63 percent of his pass attempts for 3,897 yards, 28 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions, while playing in all 17 games. Being able to produce those numbers one year removed from a torn Achilles was an impressive showing. The Steelers want to win a Super Bowl and they made aggressive moves to pursue that goal. Outside of signing Rodgers as a free agent, the front office went out and traded for DK Metcalf, Jalen Ramsey, and Jonnu Smith. Needless to say, Week 1 is going to be pure football entertainment. Rodgers will be going up against his former team and that former team is hoping to make him suffer through a miserable game. Braves Trade Brewing? Why Latest Bold Deadline Rumors Make No Sense

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Atlanta Braves came into the season with the expectation that they would be one of the best teams in baseball and compete for another World Series. But that's not how the season has gone. The Braves have been near the bottom of the National League for the entire campaign, and it seems like they're going to be aggressive sellers at the trade deadline with all eyes being on the expiring contracts in Atlanta. FanSided's Christopher Kline recently suggested the Braves could cut ties with Sean Murphy at the trade deadline alongside some of their expiring players. KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI - JULY 28: Sean Murphy #12 and Raisel Iglesias #26 of the Atlanta Braves celebrate a 10-7 win over the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium on July 28, 2025 in Kansas... KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI - JULY 28: Sean Murphy #12 and Raisel Iglesias #26 of the Atlanta Braves celebrate a 10-7 win over the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium on July 28, 2025 in Kansas City, Missouri. More"With Drake Baldwin rocketing up the NL Rookie of the Year leaderboard, veteran backstop Sean Murphy suddenly feels like a legitimate trade chip. Both are too good to keep out of the lineup," Kline wrote. "Atlanta has taken to alternating between catcher and DH reps for both, relegating the soon-to-be-traded Marcell Ozuna to a reserve role. But, in reality, it feels a bit silly to keep two elite catchers on the roster when so many front offices around the league would kill for even one catcher with Murphy's bat." Trading Murphy could make sense if he had an expiring contract, but he doesn't. He's a very valuable piece in Atlanta, even with Drake Baldwin emerging as one of the top young catchers in the sport. The biggest reason Atlanta should keep Murphy is that the Braves will likely be able to solve the pressing issue within days. Ozuna and his expiring contract are as good as gone. Once that happens, the designated hitter spot will be freed up. That newfound flexibility should allow the duo of Baldwin and Murphy to rotate from catcher to DH, while also mixing in rest days to avoid being overworked. This would keep both players in the lineup, either behind the dish or as the DH, in a good bulk of the Braves' games. They don't need to trade a catcher if there's a way to play both.
