'Jinnahwadi Party': BJP Slams Congress After Leader Calls Sikkim A Country

Sikkim, which celebrated 50 years of its integration with India less than two months ago, has been called a "neighbouring country" by a Congress leader, sparking furore and prompting a scathing attack from the BJP as well as the ruling party in the state. Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, Mr Kumar, who is a former MP from Jamshedpur, was talking about India's "deteriorating relations" with neighbouring countries and blaming the BJP-led government at the Centre for the situation. He cited examples of Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, and ended up naming Sikkim as well. On Wednesday, Mr Kumar took to X and apologised for the "slip of the tongue" and "small human error". "Yesterday, in my press conference on 'SAIL (Steel Authority of India Limited) 400 crore scam', when I was speaking on the deteriorating relations with our neighbouring countries, I accidentally took the name of a state. For which I sincerely apologise as it was just a slip of tongue," the Congress leader wrote. Yesterday in my press conference on 'SAIL 400 crore scam', when I was speaking on the deteriorating relations with our neighboring countries, I accidentally took name of a state. For which I sincerely apologize as it was just a slip of tongue. I heard from a journalist friend… — Dr. Ajoy Kumar (@drajoykumar) July 2, 2025 "I heard from a journalist friend that @BJP4India is planning to organise a press conference on this small human error," he said, daring the party to hold press meets on the SAIL scam and other issues facing the country. Pouncing on the remark, the BJP hit out at both Mr Kumar and the Congress, accusing it of being a "Jinnahwadi party". "The statement made by Ajoy Kumar that Sikkim is not an integral part of India and is, in fact, a neighbouring nation, shows how he has insulted not just Sikkim but the entire Northeast. Congress has always been against the Northeast. We have seen they have bombed one of the states in the Northeast. They have said bye-bye to Assam in the 1960s," BJP Spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla told news agency ANI. "Congress is following in the footsteps of Jinnah. It is a 'Jinnahwadi' party. Just like Jinnah wanted an Islamic state and division of India, the Congress party advocates for a Sharia Islamic state in some parts, and it wants the 'tukde tukde' of Bharat," he alleged. 'Complete Lack Of Understanding' The Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM), which is the ruling party in Sikkim, said Dr Kumar's remark was deeply hurtful to the people of the state. Emphasising that Sikkim became an integral part of India 50 years ago, Yougan Tamang, who is the press secretary to Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang (Golay), said, "The nation knows that Sikkim merged with India in 1975. For a national party leader to make such a blunder reflects a complete lack of understanding of the country's geography and history. It is disheartening and insulting to the sentiments of the people of Sikkim," Mr Tamang said. Urging the Congress to take strict action against Mr Kumar, Mr Tamang added, "Being in politics comes with the duty of awareness. Unscientific and unauthentic statements damage national unity and mislead the public... India is a union of diverse states, each with its own rich history. Political leaders must do their homework before addressing the media."

New Delhi [India], July 2 (ANI): The Sikkim unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday strongly opposed the 'outrageous and ignorant' statement made by Indian National Congress (INC) leader Ajoy Kumar, in which he referred to Sikkim as a 'neighbouring country' during a press conference at the All India Congress Committee (AICC) headquarters. In a post on social media X, the BJP Sikkim unit wrote, 'The BJP Sikkim unit vehemently denounces the outrageous and ignorant statement made by INC leader Ajoy Kumar, who shockingly referred to Sikkim as a 'neighbouring country' during his press conference at AICC headquarters today.' The party further in their post wrote that it was 'utterly deplorable' for a former IPS officer and Member of Parliament to display such an 'appalling disregard' for India's history and geography. The BJP condemned the remarks and, in its post, further wrote that Congress should 'educate' its leaders to prevent such disgraceful blunders. 'It is utterly deplorable that a former IPS officer and Member of Parliament displays such appalling disregard for India's history and geography. The Congress party must immediately educate its leaders to prevent such disgraceful blunders. This shameful remark deserves the strongest possible condemnation,' the post further read. Meanwhile, BJP leader Shehzad Poonawalla also criticised Congress on the remarks made by Ajoy Kumar and stated that the party was following the 'footsteps of Jinnah.' Poonawalla further stated that the Congress party wanted 'tukde tukde' of Bharat, stating that the remarks made by Kumar were an insult to the entire Northeast India. 'Congress is following the footsteps of Jinnah. It is a 'Jinnahwadi' party. Just like Jinnah wanted that there should be an Islamic state and division of India, the Congress party advocates for a Sharia Islamic state in some parts, and it wants the 'tukde tukde' of Bharat... Today, the statement made by Ajoy Kumar that Sikkim is not an integral part of India and is, in fact, a neighbouring nation, shows how he has insulted not just Sikkim but the entire northeast. Congress has always been against the Northeast,' Poonawalla told ANI. (ANI)

"Congress wants 'tukde tukde' of Bharat": Poonawalla slams Ajoy Kumar for calling Sikkim a "neighbouring Country"

New Delhi [India], July 2 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) National Spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla on Wednesday sharply criticised Congress leader Ajoy Kumar for referring to Sikkim as a foreign nation. Poonawalla alleged that the Congress advocates for 'tukde-tukde' (division) of India. Poonawalla described Kumar's remarks as an insult to Sikkim and the entire Northeast region. He accused Congress of longstanding hostility toward the Northeast. 'Today, the statement made by Ajoy Kumar that Sikkim is not an integral part of India and is, in fact, a neighbouring nation, shows how he has insulted not just Sikkim but the entire northeast. Congress has always been against the Northeast. We have seen they have bombed one of the states in the Northeast. They have said bye-bye to Assam in the 1960s,' Poonawalla told ANI. Taking a jibe at Congress, the BJP spokesperson said that they follow the 'footsteps of Jinnah.' 'Congress is following the footsteps of Jinnah. It is a 'Jinnahwadi' party. Just like Jinnah wanted that there should be an Islamic state and division of India, the Congress party advocates for a Sharia Islamic state in some parts, and it wants the 'tukde tukde' of Bharat,' Shehzad Poonawalla said. The row began when addressing a press conference on Tuesday, Ajoy Kumar named Sikkim as one of the 'neighbouring nations' alongside Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka, with whom India's relations have been spoiled. Meanwhile, Kumar shared an X post and apologised for his statement, calling it a slip of the tongue. Ajoy Kumar wrote, 'Yesterday in my press conference on 'SAIL 400 crore scam', when I was speaking on the deteriorating relations with our neighbouring countries, I accidentally took name of a state. For which I sincerely apologise as it was just a slip of tongue.' Further, he targeted the BJP and asked them to hold a press conference on the 'atrocities' in 'Amrit Kaal' rather than his 'human error'. 'I heard from a journalist friend that @BJP4India is planning to organise a press conference on this small human error. I want to ask BJP; 1. Why don't they do a press conference on the atrocities happening in this 'AmritKaal'? I did speak about it too yesterday at my Press Conference,' the X post read. He questioned the BJP over the alleged SAIL scam of Rs 400 crore. '2. Why don't they do a press conference on SAIL's Rs 400 crore scam? I did speak about it too yesterday at my Press Conference. 3. Why don't they do a press conference on what is the relation between Ekta Aggarwal, the promoter of VIPPL company, which was the main cause of SAIL's loss of Rs 400 crore, with BJP? I did speak about it too yesterday at my Press Conference,' Kumar added. '4. Why don't they do a press conference on the BJP MLA who beat up a passenger in the Vande Bharat train and the BJP MLA who slapped the SDM? I did speak about it too yesterday at my Press Conference. BJP will never do a press conference on the major issues the country is going through, but instead looks out for small mistakes of the opposition leaders,' the X post read. (ANI)

'Jinnahwadi party': BJP slams Ajoy Kumar's 'Sikkim a neighbouring country' remark; Congress leader hits back

Congress leader Ajoy Kumar (File photo) NEW DELHI: Congress leader Ajoy Kumar stoked a massive controversy on Wednesday as he, in a major faux pas, referred to Sikkim as India's neighbouring nation. Critising the Narendra Modi government over foreign policy and New Delhi's relations with neighbouring countries, Ajoy Kumar said: "First time in India's history, we have ruined our relationships with neighbouring countries in a way that Sikkim, Nepal and Bangladesh are glaring defiantly, whereas Sri Lanka is keeping quiet. " Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the political nemesis of the Congress, latched on to the remark of Ajoy Kumar and accused the grand-old party of "following the footsteps of Jinnah", labelling it "Jinnahwadi" party. "Just like Jinnah wanted that there should be an Islamic state and division of India, the Congress party advocates for a Sharia Islamic state in some parts, and it wants the 'tukde tukde' of Bharat... They have said bye-bye to Assam in the 1960s," BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla told news agency ANI. As his remark began to spiral into controversy, Ajoy Kumar apologised for his slip of tongue and posed further questions to the BJP, accusing the ruling party of never doing a press conference "on the major issues the country is going through". by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 15 Most Beautiful Women Ever Today's NYC Undo "I heard from a journalist friend that @BJP4India is planning to organise a press conference on this small human error.
