‘Karun Nair's career is back': Dinesh Karthik announces after he keeps India alive with first fifty since 303 in 2016
When India captain Shubman Gill got the number of changes in the XI mixed up, he didn't miss Karun Nair's name. He was pretty clear about his return in the XI in place of Shardul Thakur, and so was the Indian team management about their eight-batter theory. Right through this five-Test series, they have preferred a batting option at No.8 and when Rishabh Pant was injured and Nitish Kumar Reddy was already out, it was a given that they would fall back to Karun Nair. India's Karun Nair celebrates his half century during the first day of the fifth Test cricket match(PTI) Karun Nair's second chance hadn't really gone to plan. In the six chances that he got, the experienced right-hander failed to register a single half-century despite getting his eyes on pretty much every occasion. He was dropped from the XI at Old Trafford, which many believed was a full stop on his career. But as Karun Nair has shown time and again in his career, Never say never. Karun Nair was not only back in the Indian XI but also holding their hopes of a series-levelling win. At Stumps on Day 1 of the fifth Test, Nair was unbeaten on 52. It was his first 50-plus score in Test cricket since making that record-breaking triple century (303) in Chennai in 2016 against the same opposition. And it came on the most difficult pitch of this series. It came at a time when his career was on the line. The visitors got the first taste of the English conditions this series as The Oval greeted them with a green top. The overcast, gloomy and damp conditions added to the difficult level as the ball continued to zip around right through the day. But Karun Nair stood tall. He batted at three, batted at six but No.5 brought luck for him. Karun hit seven fours and his unbeaten 52 off 98 balls to take India to 204 for six at stumps. Former India wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik said Karun Nair's career was anything but over with the kind of knock he played on tough conditions on Thursday. "Well played Karun Nair. That's a high-quality fifty in real tough conditions. Karun Nair's career is well and truly back. If he hadn't played this Test then the team management could well have looked beyond him," Karthik said on commentary. Former India fast bowler Varun Aaron was mighty impressed with the way Karun kept soft hands while playing at deliveries outside the off stump. His habit of hanging the bat outside the off stump had brought about his downfall multiple times in the series but not on Day 1 of the series-finale. "This could have been his last chance, but he has capitalised. The pitch was doing a lot, but Karun Nair is standing tall. What stood out was Karun Nair's purposeful attempt to have soft hands to deliveries outside off stump," Aaron said on JioHostar after the day's play.

Bumrah should feature in both the remaining Tests: Kumble
New Delhi: Former India head coach Anil Kumble weighed in on the importance of Jasprit Bumrah's availability for the rest of the Test series and suggested that India's pace spearhead should feature in the remaining two Tests against England. Ahead of the Test tour of England, chief selector Ajit Agarkar and head coach Gautam Gambhir had announced that Bumrah will only play three of the five games in the series as part of workload management. It meant that Bumrah played in Tests at Headingley and Lord's, while being rested from the Edgbaston game. But with a week's gap between third and fourth Tests, Bumrah might just play in the Test at Old Trafford, starting on July 23, as India aim to equalise the series scoreline after a 22-run loss at Lord's. 'I would certainly push for Bumrah to play the next game because that's crucial. If he doesn't play and India end up losing the Test, that's it, the series would be done and dusted. Bumrah should feature in both the remaining Tests. 'Yes, he mentioned earlier that he would only play three matches, but there is a long break after this. He does not need to be part of the home series if he wants rest. But right now, Bumrah should be playing the next two,' said Kumble on JioHostar. So far, Bumrah has picked up 12 wickets in just four innings, making him the second-highest wicket-taker in the series behind Mohammed Siraj. During the practice session on Thursday, the Indian team had an injury scare as left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh suffered a cut on his bowling hand while trying to stop a ball and was seen with a bandage on. Amidst India sweating on Rishabh Pant's availability ahead of fourth Test against England in Manchester, former head coach Ravi Shastri believes the side's vice-captain shouldn't play as a specialist batter unless he's sure of taking up keeping duties for the match starting on July 23. Pant, who made 74 and nine in the third Test at Lord's, was in immense pain after being hit on the left index finger during day one's play and did not keep wickets for the rest of the match. In his absence, substitute keeper Dhruv Jurel donned the keeping gloves. 'I don't think he (Pant) should go in as a specialist batter if he can't keep because he'll have to field, and if he fields, that'll be worse. It's because with the gloves, at least there's some protection. Without gloves, if he gets something that stings him there, then it won't be very good. It'll worsen the injury,' said Shastri in a video posted on ICC's Instagram account on Friday. 'Also, you've got to see if it's a break. If it's a break or a fracture, I don't know, I'm not part of the dressing room, then I think he'd rather rest and come fully fit at The Oval. But he won't get a substitute. Now, they will know that he has been injured. 'When you pick the team for the next Test, he'll have to keep and he'll have to bat. He can't do one of the two. It's better if he's fully fit. If it's not a crack, I think he'll play. If it's not a crack, there's still about eight or nine days, he should be okay,' concluded Shastri.

Series on the line as India consider Bumrah gamble in do-or-die fourth Test against England
Jasprit Bumrah is a weapon India must use sparingly but with the five-test series against England on the line, the tourists are considering playing their pace spearhead in the fourth Test in Manchester next week. The team management has decided that Bumrah, whose workload has been carefully managed since he returned from a back surgery earlier this year, will play three of the five Tests in England. A victory in Manchester would give England an unassailable 3-1 lead. To prevent that, India are considering playing Bumrah, who skipped the second Test in Birmingham, in the next match rather than preserving him for the final Test at the Oval. 'We know we have got him for one of the last two Tests,' assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate told reporters after a training session on Thursday. 'It's pretty obvious that the series is on the line now in Manchester, so there will be a leaning towards playing him.' 'But again, we have got to look at all the factors: how many days of cricket are we going to get up there, what do we feel is our best chance of winning that game, and then how that fits in together with the Oval.' Arguably the best all-format bowler of his era, Bumrah registered five-wicket hauls in both the Tests he played on this tour of England, though India lost both in Leeds and Lord's. India wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant, who suffered a finger injury at Lord's, did not bat in Thursday's practice. Ten Doeschate was confident Pant will reprise his usual roles in front of the stumps with the bat and behind them with the keeper's gloves in Manchester. 'Look, I don't think you're going to keep Rishabh out of the Test no matter what,' former Dutch international ten Doeschate said. 'He batted with quite a lot of pain in the third Test and it's only going to get easier and easier on his finger.' Former India head coach Anil Kumble weighed in on the importance of Bumrah's availability for the rest of the Test series and suggested that India's pace spearhead should feature in the remaining two Tests. India will now be aiming to bounce back in the fourth Test against England at Manchester, starting on July 23, before the fifth and final match of the series takes place at The Oval in London from July 31 to Aug. 4. Meanwhile, head coach Gautam Gambhir joined other members of the team in praising veteran left-arm spin bowling all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja's incredible performance in the Lord's Test. Though Jadeja hit a valiant 61 not out off 181 balls on final day's play, his fourth successive fifty in Tests, India lost at Lord's by 22 runs and find themselves 2-1 behind in the five-match series against England. 'That was an incredible fight. The fight from Jaddu was absolutely brilliant,' said Gambhir in a video posted on on Friday. Jadeja had shown tremendous grit in keeping India in the hunt for chasing 190. 'As a player in the team, Jaddu bhai is extraordinary in fielding, bowling, and batting. The improvement that has come in batting, he makes runs in every important situation for the team. It's very difficult to find such a player for the team. We are lucky to have such a player in our team,' said fast bowler Siraj. Agencies
