Chhattisgarh: Raigarh panchayats adopt digital payment for revenue, vendors

Raipur: All 549 panchayats of Raigarh district in Chhattisgarh have adopted digital payment systems, including UPI-based transactions, for tax collections and vendor payments, an official said. The initiative, which began in the financial year 2023–24, aligns with directives from the Union government to minimise human interface and plug leakages through increased use of digital mechanisms. Since the initiative's roll-out, the panchayats have collectively mobilised over ₹10 crore in revenue during 2023–24. 'Raigarh is first district in Chhattisgarh which has started the digital payment system in village,' an official said. The district administration spearheaded the move after a central advisory encouraged digital adoption to ensure accountability and streamline revenue processes. 'Each panchayat was assigned a unique UPI ID to enable secure and swift digital transactions and to build awareness and drive adoption, local officials promoted the initiative through posters in public places, announcements in gram sabhas, and dedicated WhatsApp groups within villages,' Zila Panchayat Raigarh CEO Jitendra Yadav said. 'Digital payment is not just a technological shift—it's a governance reform. It empowers citizens, improves transparency, and enhances accountability, especially as people increasingly raise questions about fund usage in gram sabhas,' Yadav added. Yadav explained that taxes collected via UPI now include water tax, lighting tax, and building tax (all of which are annual in nature). Additionally, panchayats have begun accepting payments digitally for haat bazaar leases, mobile tower leases, mela (fair) leases, and other community space rentals. 'Vendor payments by panchayats are also increasingly being routed through digital systems, reducing the scope for irregularities and speeding up the process for beneficiaries,' he added. While all 549 panchayats of Raigarh are now on board with the digital system, some residents continue to prefer physical payment methods. 'The administration is working to bridge this gap and aims to achieve 100 percent digital adoption across all users by 2026,' Yadav said. 'The benefits are well-documented—we've included them clearly in our presentations. But the real feedback comes from the gram sabhas, where people are now more engaged and informed than ever before,' an official said.

31 Maoist bodies recovered in Op Sankalp on Chhattisgarh-Telangana border: Cops

RAIPUR: RAIPUR: The Chhattisgarh police on Monday said they have recovered the bodies of 31 suspected Maoists during 'Operation Sankalp' in the dense forests surrounding the Karregutta hills along the Chhattisgarh-Telangana border. It is not clear when the Maoists were killed. Bijapur superintendent of police Jitendra Yadav said that detailed information regarding the operation will be shared during a press briefing in Bijapur on Tuesday. Police said they have identified 20 of the 31 deceased Maoists and 11 of the 20 identified bodies have been handed over to their families after post-mortem examinations and completion of other legal formalities. 'The identification process for the remaining 11 bodies is underway. Once the process is complete, their bodies will also be returned to their respective families,' said a statement issued by the Bijapur police. On April 3, one woman Maoist was killed in the same operation, which is yet to be identified. Earlier, on April 24, three women Maoists were gunned down in the same region, and a significant cache of weapons, explosives, and other materials was seized. The operation in the area, named 'Operation Sankalp', started on April 21. 'So far, we have good operational outcomes in the ongoing anti-naxal operations in South -West Bastar. All security forces are safe and fully committed to ensuring a safe and secure Bastar region. As the operation is currently in progress, specific details cannot be disclosed at this time for security reasons. Authorised authorities will share further information at an appropriate time,' said a police officer on the condition of anonymity. People familiar with the matter said that more than 280,00 troops were inducted in the operation and since April 21. around 35 encounters have taken place. 'We have recovered more than 400 IEDs and around 40 weapons along with approximately 2 tonnes of explosive materials,' said a police officer. The operation, described as one of the largest counter-insurgency missions in Bastar, involves around 28,000 personnel from various units, including Chhattisgarh Police's District Reserve Guard (DRG), Bastar Fighters, Special Task Force (STF), the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), and its elite CoBRA unit. Authorities launched the offensive following intelligence inputs about the presence of top Maoist leaders, including those from the Telangana state committee and the heavily armed 'battalion number 1'—regarded as the strongest military wing of the Maoists. According to police, the Karregutta hill range serves as a stronghold for the battalion. Intelligence reports suggest that several senior cadres have been either killed or critically injured during the operation. So far, hundreds of Maoist hideouts and bunkers have been destroyed, and large quantities of explosives, detonators, food supplies, and daily-use items have been recovered. Six security personnel from STF, DRG, and CoBRA units sustained injuries in separate pressure IED blast incidents but are reported to be out of danger. With the latest action, 168 Maoists have been gunned down in separate encounters in Chhattisgarh so far this year. Of them, 151 were eliminated in the Bastar division, comprising seven districts, including Bijapur.

Amid India Pakistan war, Indore's Holkar Stadium gets bomb blast threat after Arun Jaitley Stadium and Chepauk, message mentions 'Operation Sindoor'

Indore's Holkar Stadium has received a bomb threat. (Source: X) The famous Holkar Stadium in Indore received a bomb blast threat, with the unidentified sender of an e-mail warning of retaliation in response to Operation Sindoor, police said on Saturday. The threat turned out to be a hoax coming in the middle of ongoing India-Pakistan war. 'MPCA's (Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association) official email (ID) on Friday received a threatening message. The email, written in English, mentions that the stadium will be blasted due to 'Operation Sindoor' (of Indian armed forces),' Tukoganj police station in-charge Jitendra Singh Yadav told PTI. Indore, Madhya Pradesh: Station House Officer Jitendra Yadav says, 'Yesterday, we received a bomb threat at Holkar Stadium via email. Taking it seriously, the police evacuated the stadium and conducted a thorough search. No suspicious item was found, and we have taken the email… — IANS (@ians_india) May 10, 2025 After being alerted by MPCA, four teams of police personnel and a bomb squad thoroughly searched the stadium's premises for five hours. 'No suspicious thing was found in the Holkar stadium,' Yadav said. The Holkar Stadium is famous for former India opener Virender Sehwag's iconic 219 against in an ODI match against the West Indies back in 2011. It has also hosted IPL matches in IPL 2011 as well as in the 2017. It was the 'home ground' of Bollywood star Preity Zinta co-owned Punjab Kings in 2017. Police are trying to trace the origin of the hoax e-mail in collaboration with the cyber squad, and legal action will be taken. Prima facie, the email seems a 'copy-paste' job for mischief, although the police are investigating various aspects, an officer said. The officer said that in the past months, fake emails threatening to bomb Indore airport, bank branches, hospitals, and schools have been received. He said an accused has been arrested in one case. A 'threat' had been received, which claimed that a bomb would be detonated if cricket events were to be held here, police said on Friday. An investigation has been ordered, a police official said, adding the threat was made via an e-mail, which warned against cricket events at the M A Chidambaram stadium in Chennai, the home of MS Dhoni's Chennai Super Kings. Following the receipt of the mail, a bomb disposal squad made a thorough inspection and did not find anything suspicious, police officials told PTI adding 'it was a hoax'. The e-mail was received on Thursday and it was brought to the notice of police on May 9 morning, following which an inspection was held. Asked if this was suspected to be a handiwork of repeat offenders, the official said a probe would unmask those behind the threat. The Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) on Friday received bomb threat emails at the Arun Jaitley Stadium following the Indian Army's 'Operation Sindoor'. The emails were sent to the DDCA's official email ID, and retaliation was threatened at the stadium in response to the operation. The bomb threat email was received on Friday morning, prompting immediate action from the authorities. 'The mail came in the morning between 11 and 12 at the DDCA's official email ID. It was a threatening email in which it was written that we will retaliate at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in response to Operation Sindoor. We sent it to the President, and the bomb squad came to the venue and checked everything and went,' DDCA Secretary Ashok Sharma told ANI news agency. The bomb squad inspected the venue and cleared it after finding no evidence of any explosive devices.
