The South African Weather Service (Saws) has issued a warning for extremely cold temperatures in most parts of the city of Johannesburg. Residents are urged to exercise caution when using heating devices, things like heaters, braziers or paraffin stoves, not to leave them unattended while in use, so that we can be able to prevent fire incidents which might occur at home during this extremely cold temperatures. 'From our side as a city of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services, together with our disaster management and monitoring teams, we remain on high alert, monitoring all seven regions of the city for any emergencies which might occur,' Mulaudzi said. Other parts of SA Saws warned of wet, windy, and cold to very cold conditions over western high-lying areas of the Western Cape and southern parts of the Northern Cape and Free State, with a possibility of light snow along the high-lying mountain tops of Western Cape, Eastern Cape up to the Lesotho until Wednesday. 'Farmers and small stock farmers are advised to provide proper shelter, dry bedding, and energy-rich feed to protect their animals against these conditions'. Saws also warned of extremely high fire danger conditions expected over the Beaufort West Municipality of Western Cape, Thembelihle Municipality of Northern Cape and the extreme northwestern parts of Free State. Snowfall is also anticipated in some high-lying areas, especially in the Free State and KwaZulu-Natal. In Gauteng, no rainfall is expected as the cold front arrives; however, residents should expect strong winds and chilly mornings. In Pretoria, the minimum is expected to be 4°C, with a high of 15°C. Joburg Emergency Services spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi has urged Johannesburg residents to take precautionary measures to stay warm during the cold front. 'Residents of the City of Johannesburg are urged to prepare for a weather shift as the South African Weather Services has issued a warning for extremely cold temperatures in most parts of the City of Johannesburg from this coming Wednesday towards the week,' he said as per The Citizen. 'This drop in temperatures means that residents throughout the City of Johannesburg will be forced to use all sorts of heating devices to try and warm themselves in the process, making themselves vulnerable to fire incidents at home if heating devices are used unsafely/unattended,' Mulaudzi said. Cold weather Gauteng Weather warned residents to brace for a cold snap across parts of the province from Friday. 'Breaking: Very early forecast suggests cold snap in Gauteng from Friday!' Gauteng Weather forecast temperatures dropping to a minimum of 10°C in Johannesburg with a high of 18°C. Pretoria has been forecast with a minimum of 11°C and a high of 20°C. Residents are urged to exercise caution while using heating devices. Make sure that all the heating devices are not left unattended while in use, things like paraffin stoves and heaters.' High alert Mulaudzi also warned people to monitor young children to ensure that they stay away from heating devices. 'Our residents in informal settlements who are using mostly imbaula or braziers to ensure that they are using it in a well-ventilated area. Before going to bed, they need to remove it, take it out so that we can prevent incidents where they might inhale toxic fumes from the brazier,' Mulaudzi said. Mulaudzi added that as the City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services they will remain on high alert and monitor all seven regions of the city for any emergencies.
