Charles Barkley believes coaches in today's NBA are 'cowards'
Basketball Hall of Famer Charles Barkley spoke candidly Friday about how players in today's NBA could become great, and it all revolved around who is on the bench. Barkley lamented how coaches treat NBA players today, suggesting some are "scared to coach" because of how much money players make. "I think the biggest thing you need to be a great player is have a good coaching staff. That is probably the most important thing — the coaching staff," Barkley explained on "The Dan Patrick Show." "I think more players get ruined by bad coaching staffs … because coaches are cowards. They're scared to coach. "Like, I wanted a Pat Riley. I had a great coach, Billy Cunningham, a Gregg Popovich, but most of the coaches today, they are cowards because the players make so much money. They don't have them under control. The players run the team. And the coach needs to realize that player is going to get him fired, but we have taken the power from the coaches away because the players make so much money. But I say bad coaches have ruined more players than anything in the NBA." Barkley spoke to Patrick at the American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament in Lake Tahoe. The annual event took place over the weekend, and former NHL star Joe Pavelski took home the trophy. The former Phoenix Suns star finished tied for 69th despite most bettors wagering he would win the tournament.

Aaron Rodgers offers cold response to kid who claimed star QB almost hit him with golf ball
Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers offered some tough love to a fan at the American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament over the weekend. A video posted to social media on Sunday showed Rodgers walking to the next hole at the Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course in Nevada when a kid yelled out that the NFL star almost hit him. "Almost doesn't count," Rodgers responded as he strolled toward the tee box. It was one of two viral moments the four-time NFL MVP had with fans during the tournament. On Saturday, Rodgers refused to sign an autograph after he quizzed the man about the one pass he threw in a game in 2005 when he was still a backup to Brett Favre with the Green Bay Packers. The fan claimed he had a ticket from the game. The fan couldn't name the player Rodgers threw a pass to when the quarterback asked. Rodgers then refused to sign anything for him and declared him an "autograph hound." Rodgers finished 15th in the American Century Championship golf tournament with a Stableford score of 44. Former NHL star Joe Pavelski won the tournament with a 73. He defeated Baseball Hall of Famer John Smoltz, who previously told Fox News Digital he was feeling good about his chances of winning the tournament. Wisconsin hockey legend Joe Pavelski won the American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament on Sunday afternoon. His eagle on the final hole clinched a nine-point victory over second-place finisher, Hall of Fame pitcher John Smoltz. Pavelski shot 70 (-2), 72 (E), 68 (-4) to clinch the victory. The event uses a modified Stableford scoring system, with 10 points awarded to an Albatross, eight to a hole-in-one, six to an eagle, three to a birdie, one to a par, zero to a bogey and minus-two to a double bogey or worse. Pavelski recorded one eagle, 12 birdies and 35 pars during the three-day event, plus carded only four bogeys and two double-bogeys. He finished the event with 73 total points, earning first-place finish that is worth $150,000 (20% of the total $750,000 purse). The former Badger and 18-year NHL veteran hung up his skates last summer after the 2024 season. Along with Sunday's triumph, Pavelski also won the celebrity division of an LPGA golf tournament back in February. It's safe to say he's beginning an impressive second act of his athletic career. Pavelski entered the Wisconsin record books nearly 20 years ago, when he led the Badgers to the 2006 national title as their top point-scorer. His two-year Wisconsin career included 84 games and 101 total points (39 goals, 62 assists). He was also a Second-Team All-American in 2006, following that national title run. The forward went on to play 18 NHL seasons, 13 for the San Jose Sharks and five for the Dallas Stars. Those seasons included 1,332 career games and 1,068 points (476 goals, 592 assists). He concluded his career as the league's all-time leader in postseason games (201) without a Stanley Cup title. While his team could never cross the finish line in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, Pavelski is already doing so on the golf course. Ex-NHL star Joe Pavelski wins American Century celebrity golf tournament
Joe Pavelski stood alone as the winner of the American Century Championship at Lake Tahoe on Sunday, July 13. The former NHL star capped off his 41st birthday weekend, going wire-to-wire in the celebrity golf tournament at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course and finishing with a total of 73 in the modified Stableford scoring system the tournament uses. Pavelski left do no doubt, sealing his victory with an eagle on the final hole. He finished nine points ahead of Baseball Hall of Famer John Smoltz, who rallied on the final day to finish second after entering the day tied for sixth. Pavelski entered the final round on Sunday tied for first with former soccer player Taylor Twellman. The two were even at 44 after the first two rounds. Twellman dropped off in the final round and finished fourth. Country singer Jake Owen finished third. LEADERBOARD: Full results from American Century Classic Other notable names in the tournament include Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry (5th place), NFL quarterback Aaron Rodgers (15th), who recently signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers, and Basketball Hall of Famer and TNT analyst Charles Barkley (69th). Pavelski announced his retirement from the NHL on July 16, 2024, after 18 seasons, tallying 1,068 career points (476 goals, 592 assists) in 1,332 regular-season games for the Dallas Stars and San Jose Sharks. Pavelski finished second to former tennis player Mardy Fish at Edgewood in 2024 and was third in 2023 when Curry won. Pavelski earned $150,000 for winning the American Century Championship , which he said will likely go towards a new MasterCraft boat.
