Bulloch Co. school bus driver charged with cruelty to children
BULLOCH COUNTY, Ga. (WSAV) — A local bus driver has been fired and charged with cruelty to children after authorities said he failed to report a fight on the bus. According to the Bulloch County Sheriff's Office (BCSO), a group of seven elementary and middle school students, aged 5-14, physically attacked a 7-year-old student on April 18. Investigators have since identified and charged all seven students with battery. The bus driver, Joey Edwin Jackson was charged with cruelty to children and failure to report child abuse, since they said he never filed a report about the incident. According to BCSO, Jackson is no longer employed with the school district. School officials told WSAV that bus drivers are supposed to report fights immediately after they happen, and they are working closely with law enforcement about the incident. The seven juveniles who were charged have also been suspended from their respective schools, according to a BCSO spokesperson. Bulloch County schools gave WSAV this statement about the incident: 'Regardless of their role, all Bulloch County Schools employees are expected to uphold the highest standards for student safety and conduct… School buses and bus stops are extensions of the classroom. For this reason students are expected to behave and follow all school and bus rules and the district's Student Code of Conduct while they use bus transportation services.'
