Mariners' Victor Robles ejected for throwing bat at Triple-A pitcher
August 18 - Seattle Mariners outfielder Victor Robles was ejected from a Triple-A game on Sunday after throwing his bat at a pitcher who nearly hit him with a fastball. Robles, sidelined since April with a dislocated left shoulder, was on a rehab assignment with Tacoma when he fouled off a high and inside pitch from Las Vegas starter Joey Estes in the third inning. Robles, who already had been hit by pitches three times during the series at Las Vegas, flung his bat toward Estes in frustration and began walking toward the mound. He was immediately ejected by the home plate umpire and had to be restrained by teammates. Robles can expect to receive a suspension for the incident, which concluded with him throwing a box of snacks toward the field before going to the clubhouse. He later apologized on Instagram for letting his emotions get the best of him. "Coming off a long rehab and being away from the game for most of the season has been physically and mentally challenging," Robles said. "Adding to that, the recent passing of my mother has been incredibly hard, and I've been doing my best to hold it together. That's not an excuse, but some context I feel you deserve to understand where I'm coming from." He added, "Getting hit 5 times in 15 at-bats added to that pressure, and I reacted in a way I'm not proud of. This game means the world to me, and so do the people who play it. I respect every one of you, not just as a player, but as a teammate and competitor." Robles, 28, has been on the injured list since crashing into an outfield wall on April 6 at San Francisco. Playing right field in the series finale against Giants, Robles made a jumping catch of a long ball hit by Patrick Bailey that had barely turned foul in the bottom of the ninth. His glove hand still outstretched, Robles' elbow appeared to make contact with a padded wall and he also got tangled in netting. He was carted off the field. Robles joined the Mariners after being waived by the Washington Nationals during the 2024 season. He served as Seattle's leadoff batter in its first 10 games of this season and was hitting .273 with three doubles, three RBIs, three runs and three stolen bases. Robles has batted .248 in his 617-game career with Washington (2017-24) and Seattle, recording 35 homers, 185 RBIs, 257 runs and 103 stolen bases. He has accrued 79 hit-by-pitches over 2,142 MLB plate appearances -- or one every 27.1 plate appearances. That's more than three times the MLB rate this season, which is one HBP every 94.7 plate appearances. --Field Level Media

Mariners star Victor Robles launches his bat at pitcher and tries to start a brawl in barely-believable meltdown
Frustration got the best of Seattle Mariners star Victor Robles in shocking scenes from his rehab assignment, as he launched his bat at a pitcher and attempted to start a brawl. Suiting up for the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers, Robles stepped into the batters' box to face Las Vegas Aviators pitcher Joey Estes on Sunday night. Robles was already familiar with Estes, as they've run into each other in the big leagues, as the Aviators are the Triple-A affiliate of the Athletics, one of the Mariners' division rivals. A fastball from Estes came in high and tight on Robles, who swung and made contact with the ball, ruling the pitch a strike. Yet, the near-bean was enough to enrage the outfielder, who took a few steps before launching his bat at Estes. Robles was immediately ejected from the game for tossing his bat, with the big-leaguer then talking trash at Estes before attempting to rush the mound and start a brawl. The chaos settled down as the home-plate umpire and his Triple-A teammates got in between Robles and Estes, who was not injured from his rival's actions. After being led to the dugout, Robles then tossed a case of sunflower seeds onto the field before heading to the locker room for good. Robles posted an apology to his social media late Sunday night, but the damage was already done. 'I want to take a moment to sincerely apologize for my recent reaction on the field,' Robles posted to his Instagram story. 'I let my frustration get the best of me and I understand how that may have affected not just the game, but the energy and respect we all work so hard to maintain.' 'Coming off a long rehab and being away from the game for most of the season has been physically and mentally challenging. Adding to that, the recent passing of my mother has been incredibly hard, and I've been doing my best to hold it together. That's not an excuse, but some context I feel you deserve to understand where I'm coming from.' 'Getting hit 5 times in 15 at-bats added to that pressure, and I reacted in a way I'm not proud of. This game means the world to me, and so do the people who play it. I respect every one of you - my teammates, the opposing players, and everyone in the league.' 'I'm committed to being better, not just as a player, but as a teammate and competitor. I appreciate your understanding, and I'm grateful to be back on the field doing what I love. Thank you.' Minor League Baseball and the Mariners organization have yet to comment on the incident, while the official X account for the Aviators did chime in. 'Joey stayed cool. Vegas stays winning... #AviatorsUp,' a post stated with the video of the bat toss and near-brawl. A harsh suspension is likely incoming for Robles, with some fans thinking his season might be over even if he's back to full health. 'Bro might get suspended the rest of the season for this,' one baseball fan said on X. Robles has been out for most of this season with a dislocated shoulder, and hs been a constant target for getting plunked since starting to make his way back to the majors. The outfielder was hit by a pitch three times in his first two games for the Rainiers last week, with Estes plunking him during an Aug. 12 game. Last September, in a game between Seattle and Oakland, Estes hit Robles in a leadoff at-bat. There's a reason Estes was demoted from the majors, with his control being an issues. He's hit 28 batters in 95 minor league appearances. Should a ban be incoming, it would take Robles off the Triple-A roster, with any big-league suspension being an in-house one from the Mariners, due to the bat toss not taking place in a Major League Baseball game.

Seattle Mariners outfielder Victor Robles threw his bat toward the mound in a heated incident during a minor league baseball game as he competed for the Tacoma Rainiers. The incident occurred in the top of the third inning against the Las Vegas Aviators in a Pacific Coast League game. Joey Estes was on the mound for Las Vegas when he threw high and inside at Robles. The outfielder swung and it appeared the ball hit the barrel of the bat. Robles tried to get out of the way but to no avail. Instead, he walked around the catcher, took his bat and threw it at Estes. Robles was immediately ejected from the game and was held back from charging the mound. The broadcast showed Robles also tossing a water cooler from the dugout onto the field as his meltdown continued. The Aviators won the game, 12-7. Victor Labrada, who came into the game for Robles, finished 2-for-3 with three RBI. Athletics make unfortunate franchise history in blowout loss to Cubs
Athletics make unfortunate franchise history in blowout loss to Cubs originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area The Athletics' 18-3 home-opener loss to the Chicago Cubs was a historic MLB event — in more ways than one. Advertisement Playing at Sutter Health Park for the first time, the Athletics suffered a blowout loss the likes of which MLB hasn't seen in nearly a century. The Athletics allowed 18 runs to the visiting Chicago Cubs, the most surrendered in a home opener since the St. Louis Browns surrendered 21 to the then-Cleveland Indians on April 14, 1925, per the Associated Press' Josh Dubow via Sportradar. It also is the most allowed in a home opener in franchise history, per Sportradar, with the Athletics' previous high being 15 runs allowed, which happened in 2006 against the New York Yankees and in 1922 against the Boston Red Sox. Advertisement The Cubs wasted no time jumping on Athletics starter Joey Estes, who allowed four runs in the top of the first inning and finished his first outing of the 2025 MLB season with a loss after surrendering six runs in four innings of work. There was one positive on the evening, as Athletics shortstop Jacob Wilson, the No. 6 overall pick in the 2023 MLB Draft, launched his first MLB home run over the left field wall in the bottom of the third inning. Wilson's trip around the bases was one of the few highlights in an otherwise forgettable night for the Athletics. The good thing about baseball is tomorrow often offers a chance at redemption, something the Athletics will seek as they square off with the Cubs for the second game of their three-game series.
