Trust in La Masia – Hansi Flick following in the footsteps of Guardiola, Luis Enrique at Barcelona

La Masia has always been an integral part of Barcelona, and the several players who have made their way up the ranks over the years are testament to the same. Hansi Flick, despite not having a direct link with the club before his arrival, has adapted perfectly and understood the importance of the academy in the team's plans. Last season, he did not hold back in handing out debuts, and the same trend has continued this season, with young Jofre Torrents even making his debut for the club last weekend. Among the greats As relayed in a recent report by MARCA, Flick is on his way to joining some of the greatest coaches in Barcelona's history in terms of giving young talents chances in the first team. Last season, in his first term in charge at the club, the German coach gave six players their debut for the senior side – Marc Bernal, Gerard Martin, Andres Cuenca, Sergi Dominguez, Dani Rodriguez and Toni Fernandez. (Picture courtesy: FC Barcelona Official Website) With Torrents now the latest in the group, his tally moves to seven players and is slowly but surely catching up with former greats at the club. For comparison, Xavi Hernandez gave 15 young players their debut for the first team during his term at the club, including the likes of Lamine Yamal, Fermin Lopez, Pau Cubarsi, Hector Fort, Inaki Pena and Marc Casado. Moving further back in the timeline, Luis Enrique handed 15 players their debut in three seasons, Ernesto Valverde 14 in two and a half years and Ronald Koeman seven players during his time at the club. The record, however, is held by none other than Pep Guardiola, who gave 22 players their first chance with the senior team during his time at the club. Needless to say, Flick has big competition to beat. In the coming weeks, the likes of Pedro 'Dro' Fernandez and Guille Fernandez could be in line to make their debut, and that number can even rise as the season progresses.

Barcelona's rising star Jofre Torrents continues to make the most of his pre-season opportunities, building on a promising start to life under Hansi Flick. After a 30-minute appearance against Vissel Kobe, he featured for a full 45 minutes against FC Seoul, further cementing his place as one to watch. A look at his numbers Against the Korean side, Torrents delivered a well-rounded performance. In his 45 minutes on the pitch, the full-back recorded 34 touches and completed all 24 of his passes, achieving a perfect 100% pass completion rate. He also created one clear chance, delivered one accurate long ball, and made one successful pass into the final third. While his crossing accuracy stood at 25% with one out of four attempts connecting, it showed his willingness to push forward and take risks. Barcelona star tipped for first-ever start vs FC Seoul

Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick is giving serious consideration to affording a starting berth to an up-and-coming member of the club's defensive ranks later today. This of course comes as Barcelona prepare for the 2nd outing of the club's pre-season tour of Asia. After opening with a 3-1 downing of Japanese outfit Vissel Kobe, the Blaugrana have made the trip to South Korea, for a friendly clash with FC Seoul. Hansi Flick is expected to rotate his XI for the fixture, with some of those to have missed out against Vissel in line for minutes this time round. One player tipped for as much, meanwhile, is Jofre Torrents. Youngster Torrents was introduced off the bench for his senior debut at the weekend, slotting in at left-back. And the 18-year-old evidently did enough to impress boss Hansi Flick and his staff. This comes amid confirmation on the part of that Torrents is being prepped for his first-ever start on the senior stage in Seoul. Conor Laird – GSFN
