Cardinals achieve feat for first time in 82 years vs. Padres

The post Cardinals achieve feat for first time in 82 years vs. Padres appeared first on ClutchPoints. The St. Louis Cardinals made interesting MLB history with their performance against the San Diego Padres on Friday night. Going into the game, the Cardinals have been average throughout the season. While they have a winning record, they haven't been able to maintain consistency, especially on the road. They are 31-20 at home but don't have the same luck away with a 23-31 display. Friday night proved to be a great win for St. Louis, especially on defense. Despite giving up 11 hits after 36 at-bats, the hosts made all the plays they needed to pull off as they shut out San Diego 3-0. It's not often for a team to make MLB history by recording shutouts after conceding a lot of hits. However, the Cardinals had their fortunes shine for the first time in decades, per reporter John Denton. 'The #STLCards shut out the #Padres despite them recording 11 hits. It is the first time the Cardinals have posted a shutout with at least 11 hits surrendered since Aug. 24, 1943, in a 1-0 defeat of the Boston Braves in 10 innings. The last time the #STLCards shut out a team with at least 11 hits in a nine-inning game: Aug. 12, 1931, at the Brooklyn Dodgers.,' Denton said. How Cardinals played against Padres It was a great win for the Cardinals to earn at home, taking down a Padres squad that is in mix of playoff contention. St. Louis only needed the second and fourth innings to score their three runs throughout the entire game. Yohel Pozo used a groundout to drive Nolan Arenado home for the first score of the night. Masyn Winn followed suit with a crucial 2-RBI double to center field, bringing Arenado and Willson Contreras home for the last runs of the contest. Miles Mikolas delivered a solid performance on the mound, serving for five innings. He struck out one batter while conceding seven hits but stood his ground as San Diego was unable to figure him out. St. Louis improved to a 54-51 record on the season, holding the fourth spot of the NL Central Division standings. They are 0.5 games behind the Cincinnati Reds and seven games behind the Chicago Cubs. The Cardinals will prepare for Game 3 of their series against the Padres. The contest will take place on July 26 at 7:15 p.m. ET. Cardinals' Ryan Helsley reveals strong stance on trade rumors

At the MLB trade deadline, the St. Louis Cardinals could look to shake up their roster, one way or another. A strong end to July could have the team buying, while a rough go could have them entering the seller's market. If they do sell, one of the most highly sought-after players will be closer Ryan Helsley. According to John Denton of Helsley is one of the most likely relievers to be traded at the deadline if St. Louis struggles in July. But, also in Denton's piece, he included a strong stance from Helsley on his trade potential, and how he feels about a potential trade. "Helsley," Denton writes, "The longest-tenured Cardinal since 2015, would like to stay and sign a contract extension, but he has the most value because of his two-time All-Star pedigree." Despite the interest from Helsley in re-signing with the team, the Cardinals might still trade him at the deadline since he'd fetch the strongest return of all their relievers. During his two All-Star seasons, Helsley was one of the best bullpen arms in the game. MORE: Cardinals get good news on top Diamondbacks trade targets He doesn't want to be traded, but when push comes to shove, there might not be a better choice for the Cardinals than to move him at the deadline. With a lack of high-profile sellers on the market, the Cardinals would likely get a strong return in a potential Helsley trade. As Denton mentions, the All-Star pedigree rarely becomes available at the deadline, so the Cardinals would surely have plenty of teams interested and could get a solid return for a rental. And if Helsley still wants to return after a deal, he could sign a new contract with St. Louis in the offseason as a free agent. It's just for a couple of months that Helsley will be forced to be on a new team. If the Cardinals don't see this season as a time to compete, selling the All-Star closer makes the most sense. He could still make his way back to the city, but for the 2025 season, trading Helsley is the best short-term and long-term move if they're out of contention. Will Cardinals closer Ryan Helsley stay or go in St. Louis?

There has been much trade speculation with the deadline sitting just a few weeks away now, and one of the big names predicted to be moving teams is St. Louis Cardinals closer Ryan Helsley. But with Helsley's performance in 2025, will that still allow teams to be interested in the reigning NL Reliever of the Year? Advertisement Helsley is currently 18-for-23 in save attempts in 2025, with an ERA of 3.38, much higher than the flamethrower is used to. However, John Denton believes his overall career success could still very much make him a benefit on a team. "Helsley is the Cardinals' longest tenured player, having been in the organization since 2015, when he was the 161st overall pick of that year's draft," Denton wrote. "However, his past success, his expiring contract, and his hopes to command a salary equivalent to that of Astros closer Josh Hader and Mets closer Edwin Diaz, could make him expendable." Helsley, along with his AL counterpart that won Reliever of the Year, Guardians closer Emmanuel Clase, have both seen a drop off in production in 2025 since their career years last year, with Clase already allowing the amount of earned runs he allowed all of last year in just a little over a month into the 2025 season. Advertisement But with Helsley still reliable and the Cardinals still holding strong as Wild Card contenders as we reach the All-Star break, who knows where the closer could be dealt, despite Helsley being on record with saying he wanted to stay in St. Louis. We'll see how loyal he stays should the Los Angeles Dodgers or any other certified playoff contender show interest in the hot-handed righty.

Young musician's 'mind-blowing' meeting with Bruce Springsteen

A young musician who met Bruce Springsteen backstage and handed him a CD of his own music has said his "mind was blown" after his chat with the Denton, 15, from Salford, spoke to Springsteen before his sold-out show in Manchester on Saturday at the Co-op Live arena as part of a visit arranged by Salford Lads and Girls Club. His father Phil said his son, who is part of the club, went thinking it was "just another gig", but brought a demo of his own music in the hope someone might pass it on to artist known affectionately by fans as The Boss."He never thought he would actually see the man himself and be able to give it to him," Phil told BBC Radio Manchester. His father said: "Bruce took it really well and said he was really interested, so hopefully he's listening to it right now."He was just a bit mind-blown that he was meeting such a superstar."Not only did John get to meet the star of the show, but he also ran into U2 guitarist The Edge in the venue's bar, and gave him another of his CDs. Phil said: "[John] said 'you don't have to tell me if you think it's rubbish, just don't get in touch with me'."But he said 'no, I'll get in touch with you and tell you either way'."The 15-year-old first became involved with Salford Lads and Girls Club - which has a long-standing connection to Manchester's music scene - through his love of The Smiths, and went on to play his first major gig there.A group from the youth club were given backstage passes and tickets to the show, with Springsteen coming out to meet them just 30 minutes before he was due on stage. Salford Lads and Girls Club chief executive Laura Slingsby said: "Bruce was so lovely and spent his time chatting with the young people and answering some of the questions they had about his musical history."She said: "Watching the faces of the young people as the night unfolded was pure magic."Andy Hamill, National Director of National Association of Boys & Girls Clubs, said the tickets were provided through the association's partnership with World Youth said while music was important to many of the youth clubs' members, the cost of attending events was a major financial barrier, with Saturday's show being the first live concert for many of them. Springsteen has been in Manchester for a run of shows at Co-op Live, the first of which coincided with the one-year anniversary of the venue's opening.
