Young musician's 'mind-blowing' meeting with Bruce Springsteen
A young musician who met Bruce Springsteen backstage and handed him a CD of his own music has said his "mind was blown" after his chat with the Denton, 15, from Salford, spoke to Springsteen before his sold-out show in Manchester on Saturday at the Co-op Live arena as part of a visit arranged by Salford Lads and Girls Club. His father Phil said his son, who is part of the club, went thinking it was "just another gig", but brought a demo of his own music in the hope someone might pass it on to artist known affectionately by fans as The Boss."He never thought he would actually see the man himself and be able to give it to him," Phil told BBC Radio Manchester. His father said: "Bruce took it really well and said he was really interested, so hopefully he's listening to it right now."He was just a bit mind-blown that he was meeting such a superstar."Not only did John get to meet the star of the show, but he also ran into U2 guitarist The Edge in the venue's bar, and gave him another of his CDs. Phil said: "[John] said 'you don't have to tell me if you think it's rubbish, just don't get in touch with me'."But he said 'no, I'll get in touch with you and tell you either way'."The 15-year-old first became involved with Salford Lads and Girls Club - which has a long-standing connection to Manchester's music scene - through his love of The Smiths, and went on to play his first major gig there.A group from the youth club were given backstage passes and tickets to the show, with Springsteen coming out to meet them just 30 minutes before he was due on stage. Salford Lads and Girls Club chief executive Laura Slingsby said: "Bruce was so lovely and spent his time chatting with the young people and answering some of the questions they had about his musical history."She said: "Watching the faces of the young people as the night unfolded was pure magic."Andy Hamill, National Director of National Association of Boys & Girls Clubs, said the tickets were provided through the association's partnership with World Youth said while music was important to many of the youth clubs' members, the cost of attending events was a major financial barrier, with Saturday's show being the first live concert for many of them. Springsteen has been in Manchester for a run of shows at Co-op Live, the first of which coincided with the one-year anniversary of the venue's opening. Cardinals Provide Encouraging Update on Rising Young Slugger
The St. Louis Cardinals are one step closer to regaining one of their most electric bats from the early part of the season. According to John Denton, catcher Iván Herrera will travel to Memphis today to begin a rehab assignment with the Cardinals' Triple-A affiliate. Manager Oli Marmol told reporters that Herrera will go through pregame workouts with the Redbirds and is scheduled to DH for five innings on Thursday, followed by five innings behind the plate on Friday. Both games will be against the Louisville Bats, the Triple-A affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds. Advertisement Herrera sustained a left knee injury in the third inning of the opening game of a day-night doubleheader against the Boston Red Sox. After coming up limping after running out a foul pop-up, he had to be assisted off the field by Marmol and training staff. Since then, Pedro Pagés has taken over the bulk of the catching duties, while Yohel Pozo was called up from Memphis to serve as the backup. Cardinals catcher Ivan Herrera (48) has a cooler poured on him after he hit three home runsJeff Curry-Imagn Images The 24-year-old backstop was off to a scorching start in 2025, slashing .381/.458/1.048 with four home runs and 11 RBIs across just 22 plate appearances. Earlier this month, Herrera became the first catcher in franchise history to hit three home runs in a single game—an early-season accomplishment that showed his potential to breakout. Advertisement Herrera's return could bring a much-needed offensive spark to a Cardinals team that has struggled to match their strong pitching outings with consistent hitting production to start the season. Despite missing most of April, the Panama native remains tied for the team lead in home runs with four, which is a clear sign of his early impact and the club's offensive struggles. If his rehab assignment goes as expected, Cardinals fans can look forward to Herrera potentially rejoining the big-league roster in early May. Heavy rain forces Alexandra Park meeting to be postponed after one race
Horses who were scratched from the Friday meeting have the option to re-enter Saturday's fields for what will be an eight-race card. 'There wasn't a lot we could do because the rain was so heavy,' said Harness Racing New Zealand's Matt Peden, who was at Alexandra Park. 'But speaking to John Denton [track expert] he is confident, if the weather plays its part, with a bit of work we will be good to go for tomorrow night.' The second Friday to Saturday shift at Alexandra Park in three weeks will make for a big Saturday night for harness racing fans as the Group 1 meeting will race alongside a huge card at Menangle, outside Sydney, where trotting heroine Keayang Zahara will be the star of the show as she contests the $100,000 Macarthur Mile. Michael Guerin wrote his first nationally published racing articles while still in school and started writing about horse racing and the gambling industry for the Herald as a 20-year-old in 1990.
