A Pioneering African Fast-Casual Restaurant Shuts Down in Harlem
Teranga, an acclaimed African fast-casual restaurant founded by chef Pierre Thiam, is closing its original location inside the Africa Center in Harlem on Sunday, June 15, Time Out New York reports. The restaurant had been in operation for nearly six and a half years. 'It is with a sense of sadness and full hearts that we announce that we are closing our doors in Harlem on Sunday, June 15th,' the Teranga team said in a statement posted to Instagram. 'Thank you to everyone who shared a cup of Ethiopian coffee, a bottle of Bissap, a plate of hot Jollof and Suya, or a side of Kelewele with us.' Teranga, with its focus on putting ancient African grains like fonio front and center, was a big-deal opening back in early 2019. With his fine dining background, Thiam was best known for his work at places like the pan-African Nok by Alára in Lagos, and Brooklyn Sengalese spot Le Grand Dakar, which closed down in 2011. Shortly after Teranga's opening, former Eater NY critic Ryan Sutton hailed the bowl spot as an exciting harbinger of the future of fast-casual dining in NYC. The restaurant scooped up numerous accolades during its run, including a spot on a New York Times list of the 25 essential dishes in the city in 2021. The concept has been a precursor to other fine dining chefs remixing the lunch bowl, including Chinese spot Milu, run by Eleven Madison Park alum Connie Chung. Teranga's Midtown location at 601 Lexington Avenue (stationed inside food hall the Hugh) remains open, and, in the goodbye post, the team hinted at more Teranga locations opening in the future. It's not clear whether another restaurant will be taking Teranga's place at the Africa Center, which has been weathering its own shifts in leadership strategy. Eater has reached out to both Teranga and the Africa Center for more information on the closure. Sign up for our newsletter.

Black Americans Guess African Dishes
Isiah, Lauren, and Triana are back! This time to put their palettes to the test and taste some authentic African The girls haven't had any experience with African foods at all, while Isiah was regurlary eating Jollof rice in his youth. Should be an interesting show down. The first meal the gang will taste is Ethiopian Sambusa... BuzzFeed / Via All three were digging the taste and the slight heat. All three also guessed hella wrong—damn. No one gains points this round. At least they can add Sambusas to their lists of favorite foods?? BuzzFeed / Via Next meal our panelists tried was some good 'ol jollof rice from Nigeria. An important distinction—Ghanaians and the Naija continue to debate on whose version is the best. Now based on his response, Isiah should guess correctly, but the night is still young. BuzzFeed / Via Isiah DID guess correctly and so did Triana. Both get 2 points. Poor Lauren, maybe next dish? The last dish the trio tried was chicken taggine and couscous from Morocco. Tasty. The panelists had issues placing the meal in their mouths. LOL. BuzzFeed / Via Nor do they understand what they're eating. The blindfold makes things so tricky. BuzzFeed / Via No one guessed correctly this round, which means both Triana and Isiah tied for the win! BuzzFeed / Via

Africans Try Each Other's Jollof Rice
We're back with another batch of food to taste. Today's menu?? Jollof Rice. Many African countries have their own Jollof recipes and are very proud of them, which makes it a perfect dish to put to the test. Here are the rules: Gift, Michael, and Lola will try each other's jollof rice. Then, they'll rate each plate from 1-10. Whoever has the highest combined score wins! First up is Lola. She learned how to make jollof from YouTube (and her mom). In that order. She's blended the tomato, onion and pepper in a pot, put it to boil, then added the infamous rice. Lola has also added chicken and plantain to her meal! Time to put it to the test. Gift and Michael took the plunge and well, they have opinions. BuzzFeed / Via Baby, Lola's rice was dry. Gift decided she was the only thing giving today... Her plantains and chicken were pretty okay, so Michael gave Lola her props. Lola walks away with a combined score of 11.5. Next up is Gift who wasn't taught how to make jollof, she mostly learned by observing and adding her own twist to this classic dish. BuzzFeed / Via She's called herself a great cook, but let's put her dish to the test! BuzzFeed / Via Michael and Lola were initially confused about what kind of rice they were tasting. But especially Lola, who boldly declared that what dish Gift served wasn't actually Michael also decided Gift didn't make jollof rice. Guess Gift's dish didn't give anything after all. BuzzFeed Gift walks away with a low score of 6. Them's the breaks, babe. BuzzFeed Last but not least, we have Michael. He's paired his jollof with goat and made plantain on the side. BuzzFeed Michael flavored his rice with pepper, garlic, bay leaf, salt, and pepper. That should definitely give his dish an aromatic smell. BuzzFeed No turning back now! BuzzFeed Lola automatically approves. She said it's definitely "Yoruba jollof." Honestly, that's the only compliment Micheal needs. BuzzFeed Gift was digging the spice. Michael's dish is looking pretty good. BuzzFeed All in all, Michael won with a total score of 16.3!!! BuzzFeed He gets to take home all the bragging rights! Thanks to everyone who participated—we'll see you next taste test! BuzzFeed
