A Pioneering African Fast-Casual Restaurant Shuts Down in Harlem

Eater05-06-2025
Teranga, an acclaimed African fast-casual restaurant founded by chef Pierre Thiam, is closing its original location inside the Africa Center in Harlem on Sunday, June 15, Time Out New York reports. The restaurant had been in operation for nearly six and a half years.
'It is with a sense of sadness and full hearts that we announce that we are closing our doors in Harlem on Sunday, June 15th,' the Teranga team said in a statement posted to Instagram. 'Thank you to everyone who shared a cup of Ethiopian coffee, a bottle of Bissap, a plate of hot Jollof and Suya, or a side of Kelewele with us.'
Teranga, with its focus on putting ancient African grains like fonio front and center, was a big-deal opening back in early 2019.
With his fine dining background, Thiam was best known for his work at places like the pan-African Nok by Alára in Lagos, and Brooklyn Sengalese spot Le Grand Dakar, which closed down in 2011. Shortly after Teranga's opening, former Eater NY critic Ryan Sutton hailed the bowl spot as an exciting harbinger of the future of fast-casual dining in NYC. The restaurant scooped up numerous accolades during its run, including a spot on a New York Times list of the 25 essential dishes in the city in 2021. The concept has been a precursor to other fine dining chefs remixing the lunch bowl, including Chinese spot Milu, run by Eleven Madison Park alum Connie Chung.
Teranga's Midtown location at 601 Lexington Avenue (stationed inside food hall the Hugh) remains open, and, in the goodbye post, the team hinted at more Teranga locations opening in the future. It's not clear whether another restaurant will be taking Teranga's place at the Africa Center, which has been weathering its own shifts in leadership strategy. Eater has reached out to both Teranga and the Africa Center for more information on the closure.

Prince Harry & Meghan Markle Reportedly Set For Battle Against Nudes Leaking Site

and are going for another big swing of the hammer of justice against another publication. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are set to launch a legal battle against a website that constantly reminds them about a dark day, and get rid of it for good, the legal way, of course. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are currently going through a hard time amid the Prince's reconciliation quest and the controversies involving bullying, racism, and misogyny from an African charity he co-founded. Prince Harry's Wife Reportedly Targeted In Wake Of Nude Pictures Release The actress and her husband may drag a website, described as a celebrity section of ISIS, to court over their current action. The website reportedly posted nude images of the Duchess of Sussex topless from a set of dozens of pictures stolen from her years ago. The site has also leaked raunchy photos of other celebrities, such as Miley Cyrus, thus attracting legal action. The website struck for the first time years ago when it posted pictures of the royal, and they are not about to have a repeat of the last time, hence their planned lawsuit. According to RadarOnline, Meghan also experienced an insult to her mixed-race heritage on the website, where they called her a "savage Sub-Saharan." The Site Reportedly Tag Photo Leak Activism Meghan's leaked pictures allegedly included her posing on a sofa with a towel draped over her body, and another image also showed her lying down topless. However, her breasts were covered with Arabic inscriptions. The group via the website acknowledged that they released the pictures as part of their protest against the occupation of "Muslim holy lands" by United Kingdom soldiers." They attached a couple of demands with the image, asking that their needs must be urgently met, or more pictures of the Duchess of Sussex will go up. Alongside their request to remove UK troops from their countries, the group also requested that England deliver "the finest sheep" to the Syrian/Iranian border. The group encouraged the royal family and British government to act fast on their request to prevent more damage and embarrassment to their image after letting someone like Meghan into their family. Harry Scored A Big Legal Win Against A Media House In January The philanthropist started the year with a well-earned win in court against the Sun, News Group Newspapers (NGN) publisher in January. In a report by The Guardian, the company retraced its steps by apologizing to the prince for illegally gaining access to his personal devices. They also apologized for their journalists and private investigators using the information from their illegal act based on instructions from the outlet. The company was ordered to pay substantial damages to the prince as part of their legal settlement, as communicated by Harry's counsel to the court. Harry's lawyer, David Sherborne, informed the court that the parties had arrived at a mutual agreement and thus agreed to vacate the trial. "NGN further apologises to the duke for the impact on him of the extensive coverage and serious intrusion into his private life as well as the private life of Diana, Princess of Wales, his late mother," Sherbone added. The Father-Of-Two Feels Slighted After Resigning From His Charity Foundation The Blast reported that Harry is also having internal issues with the charity Sentebale after the current chair, Dr. Sophie Chandauka, claimed governance problems and misogyny influenced Harry's exit from the organization. The prince is certainly not pleased that he stepped down from his co-founder's duties and has expressed his displeasure to his camp, describing the action as a takeover of his life's work. Harry claimed to his supporters that the current chair of Sentable had manipulated and sneaked her way to the top of the table. She is now ignoring the emerging concerns about mismanagement as a way to save face and maintain her hold on the company. "She shopped them all to the Charity Commission when the trustees raised their concerns about the charity's governance," a close source explained. The insider added that Chandauka preferred seeing the company go into ruins rather than resign due to mismanagement. Harry is also allegedly not interested in working alongside Chandauka and her alleged stool pigeons. Prince Harry Declared Innocent Of The Charity's Allegations Despite Chandauka's claims, the Charity Commission for England and Wales claimed the father-of-two was innocent. According to them, several investigations were conducted into Harry's dealings with the charity, and they all came back with zero evidence of bullying, harassment, and misogyny. The body also cleared Sentebale's chair of wrongdoing, noting that its investigation found zero proof of any improper behavior by Chandauka as chair or Harry as patron. Meanwhile, Meghan has experienced intense attacks for keeping silent amid the controversy. A psychiatrist noted that the actress now sees her husband as a liability to the growth of her personal brand and will not make his battles his, lest her lucrative businesses bear the brunt. The psychiatrist, Dr. Max Pemberton, added that Harry now faces allegations similar to those his wife made against the palace in their viral Oprah interview in 2021.

‘The Envoy' to Launch on Global Streaming as Emmy-Winning Creators Spotlight Superfoods Powering Health, Tourism and Technology

' The Envoy " is a fast-paced new docuseries from Emmy-winning talent behind Netflix, CBS, YouTube and Anthony Bourdain's original team. Premiering in 2025 on leading global streaming platforms with an estimated reach of 50 to 70 million households, the series brings a cinematic lens to extraordinary places, showing how what we eat shapes where we travel and how economies grow. Each 30-minute episode explores how food is shaping the future through three pillars: At a time when trust in traditional media is low and budgets are being slashed, 'The Envoy' stands apart: world-class cinematic quality, creator-led and mission-driven to bridge soft power with real-world impact. The mission of 'The Envoy' is to make audiences smarter, more connected and optimistic about the future. Governments Spend Billions, Yet Most Miss the Mark In 2024, governments invested over $642 billion in tourism and cultural promotion. Most of it is lost in ad buys, consultant decks and one-off campaigns with no clear return. 'The Envoy' is the first purpose-built platform for driving action among U.S. consumers, who control more than $8 trillion in global spending across travel, food and lifestyle. 'Sometimes the difference between a local tradition and a global success story is the right spotlight,' said Laura Layousse, CEO of Compagnie Africaine Agroalimentaire, who is featured in 'The Envoy: Senegal.' ''The Envoy' gives us that spotlight. We've always known fonio was something special — a beautiful, resilient grain that's nourished our communities for generations. This kind of visibility can change everything for farmers, families, and the future of African agriculture.' Case Study: Thailand's Culinary Diplomacy Success In 2002, Thailand launched the Global Thai program to boost its global image through cuisine — a key success for culinary diplomacy, the concept of sharing culture through food. The economic success of pad thai as a global staple resulted in increased demand for rice noodle exports, increased travel to Thailand and improved international perception. 'The Envoy' is the first systematic approach to taking this model further. Using premium global distribution and world-class storytelling, the series accelerates visibility and perception change by spotlighting tourism, trade and technology. A New Model For Media ''The Envoy' fills a critical gap in the market, aligning the goals of governments, nonprofits, and viewers to create shared prosperity and stronger global ties,' said Todd Green, strategic advisor to 'The Envoy.' 'Our media model is built to be sustainable and a blueprint for the future of content marketing where premium storytelling, journalistic integrity and real-world impact work hand in hand.' The series is already being featured at major global forums, including at a highly curated Sundance Film Festival event held alongside executives from Whole Foods Market and The Rockefeller Foundation, to connect storytelling with strategy. The show's marketing strategy embraces the power of in-person connection, with a presence at key cultural and commercial events including the Fancy Food Show, World Travel Market, U.N. General Assembly and SXSW. Premiere Episode: Fonio in West Africa The debut episode features Bill Gates, celebrity chef Pierre Thiam, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Borso Tall and philosopher-farmer Moussa Samb as they explore one of the world's oldest and most climate-resilient grains. Fonio was the grain of kings and buried with ancient pharaohs — until it was nearly lost. Today, this nutrient-rich grain is powering a new future across the Sahel by improving nutrition, expanding economic opportunity for women and helping reverse desertification. 'The Envoy' brings this story to life as a blueprint for healthier communities, economic growth and a more resilient planet. Looking Ahead 'We've combined world-class journalism, filmmaking, creator content and marketing into one platform,' said Anne Marie Hagerty, creator and host of 'The Envoy.' 'Our team aims to launch the next 'Food Wonders of the World,' using premium content to make our viewers smarter, more optimistic and more aware of how their choices can have a positive impact on the planet.' 'The Envoy' is now inviting select partnerships with aligned brands and foundations seeking purpose-driven content that travels — culturally and commercially — to amplify their mission on a world stage. New episodes will premiere throughout 2026. For private screening access to view the show, partnership inquiries or more information, visit or email [email protected]. African-American's Discover Black Scottish on TikTok and It's a Family Reunion

Something magical is happening on TikTok, and it's bringing together two communities separated by an ocean but united by shared roots. African-American creators and Black Scottish users are discovering each other in the most beautiful way, creating a digital cultural exchange that's reshaping how we connect across continents. Many African-Americans on TikTok are surprised to discover the vibrant Black Scottish community—often admitting in the comments, 'I didn't even know there were Black people in Scotland!' But Black Scottish people have a rich and resilient history, beginning with early migration and later shaped by Caribbean, African, and local influences. Today, Black Scots not only embrace the classic symbols of their homeland—like tartan, kilts, and ceilidhs—but do so with a distinctly urban edge: custom plaid streetwear, remixed bagpipe beats, and bold hairstyles that blend natural textures with highland patterns. Just like African-Americans, they use culture and creativity to carve out an unmistakable identity in a society where they are often underrepresented. STAY INFORMED! CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR OUR NEWSLETTER! Because of these unique blends, African-American viewers find familiar threads in the experiences of Black Scots—from the sharing of family food traditions to reflections on overcoming adversity. This recognition lights up TikTok feeds and comments with joy, amazement, and newfound kinship. 'Your accent is different, but your struggle sounds like mine,' observes one user—capturing the heart of this virtual reunion. This cultural fusion is enriching TikTok by showing authentic connection over performative content. Users witness real conversations about identity, heritage, and belonging. The algorithm, usually criticized for creating echo chambers, is instead facilitating meaningful cross-cultural dialogue. What we're seeing isn't just viral content—it's digital kinship. Two branches of the diaspora are finding each other, sharing stories, and creating new traditions together. In a divided world, TikTok has become an unexpected place for family reunions.
