MRC To Introduce Rubber Tapping Technology In Bukit Panau To Boost Smallholders' Income

REGION - EAST > NEWS TANAH MERAH, May 13 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Rubber Council (MRC) will introduce rubber tapping, collection and dilution technology in Bukit Panau, involving 82 smallholders in the area. Its chairman Datuk Seri Mohamad Suparadi Md Noor said the technology was introduced to help increase the income of rubber smallholders in the area. 'The technology was first introduced in Janda Baik, Pahang as a pilot project and we will bring it to Bukit Panau, Tanah Merah in Kelantan, involving 82 rubber smallholders. bootstrap slideshow 'I have discussed with the Implementation Coordination Unit (ICU) of the Prime Minister's Department, through the Kelantan Federal Development Office, to implement this project as we know that most of the poor in this state are farmers, fishermen and rubber smallholders,' he told reporters after the 'Jom Masuk U' Programme here today. He further said that despite owning their own land, the average rubber smallholders in the state did not enjoy good yields. 'Therefore, we aim to increase their income from RM700 to over RM5,000 a month through the technology we have introduced, while also improving both the quality and quantity of latex,' he said. Mohamad Suparadi said the country's rubber industry remained relevant despite challenges following the announcement of the US tariffs and that MRC and that the MRC and the government were constantly seeking ways to improve exports, particularly in terms of quality. Last Saturday, Bernama reported that the Malaysian rubber market was expected to remain subdued the following week due to a prevailing bias towards weaker demand. Industry expert Denis Low said there appeared to be some volatility in the rubber market, with prices and demand moving like a pendulum.

Support PKR election allegations with evidence, not sentiment

KUALA SELANGOR: All allegations regarding the PKR election process, whether at the division or central leadership level, must be supported with evidence and not based on sentiment-driven arguments, said PKR vice-president Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari. He said the Central Election Committee (JPP) had done its best to ensure that the leadership election for the 2025-2028 term is conducted fairly and transparently. 'The JPP has already conducted re-elections in several divisions where irregularities were found, and that itself is proof that the committee is trying its best. However, allegations on the matter continue to be made by those who are disappointed or still dissatisfied. 'A full report and audit of the division-level elections has already been presented to the central leadership recently,' he said at a press conference after officiating at the handover of the Raw Water Guarantee Scheme (SJAM) Project Package A and Package C here today. Meanwhile, in Kelantan, state PKR chairman Datuk Seri Mohamad Suparadi Md Noor has urged party members to be mature and not sow discord among leaders. 'Anyone can contest, but we should support leaders who are capable of driving the party forward, especially during state or national elections. 'In my view, PKR members are mature enough to vote and choose those who are truly qualified to lead,' he told reporters after the 'Jom Masuk U' programme and the 2024 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) Excellence Awards Ceremony for the Tanah Merah parliamentary constituency today. The central leadership elections on May 23 will run from 8 am to 5 pm and will be conducted using two methods: physical voting by delegates of the Central Congress, the Central Angkatan Muda Keadilan (AMK) Congress and the Central Women's Congress, taking place at Berjaya Waterfront Hotel and Danga Bay Convention Centre in Johor Bahru. For Sabah and Sarawak, physical voting will take place at the International Technology and Commercial Centre (ITCC) in Penampang and the Penview Convention Centre in Kuching. Regular and additional delegates for the Central, Central AMK and Central Women's Congresses will not need to attend in person as voting will be conducted online at the same date and time via the ADIL app. The PKR National Congress, including the AMK and Women's Congresses, is scheduled to be held from May 22 to 24 in Johor Bahru.

Kota Kinabalu: Higher Education Deputy Minister Datuk Mustapha Sakmud said his Ministry is considering scrapping university courses with low employability rates or those no longer align with industry needs. Citing research by TalentCorp, he said at least 260 job roles in Malaysia are expected to disappear due to technological advancements. Mustapha said any university course with a graduate employability rate below 30 per cent will be reviewed and possibly restructured to make it more relevant and competitive. 'This is part of our long-term plan to ensure higher education keeps pace with technological change and market demands,' he said during the launch of the 'Jom Masuk U' programme at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), here. Jobs that are at risk of automation include models, secretaries, auditors, cashiers, travel agents, data entry clerks, telemarketers, factory workers, bank tellers, and postal clerks, according to TalentCorp website. Mustapha also expressed concern over the low interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) fields, with national participation at just 22percent, and Sabah even lower at 12.6percent. He said the trend happened because lack of early exposure and awareness among students and parents. 'Many students choose easier courses over those needed by the industry,' he said, stressed the importance of introducing STEM early to build lasting interest and strengthen the country's talent in key sectors. To tackle these issues, Mustapha said a joint committee has been formed, involving the Higher Education Ministry, the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (Mosti), and the Education Ministry. Their goal is to develop strategies to revive STEM education and align academic courses with future job market needs. Also present at the event was UMS Vice-Chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Kasim Mansor.
