Cubs Offense Could Get Better With Addition of This Outfielder

Chicago has one of the best lineups in MLB and that lineup is a huge reason it was the first National League team to reach 40 wins. There are weak spots for the Cubs, one of which is their bench. The duo of Jon Berti and Vidal Brujan have combined for just four at-bats since May 20, meaning neither of those two players have done much for Chicago over the last two weeks. It is safe to assume Chicago will upgrade its bench prior to the trade deadline and one option to upgrade it would be current Chicago White Sox outfielder and former Cub Mike Tauchman. CHICAGO, ILLINOIS - JUNE 05: Mike Tauchman #18 of the Chicago White Sox looks on against the Detroit Tigers at Rate Field on June 05, 2025 in Chicago, spent the first five seasons of his career with the Colorado Rockies, New York Yankees and San Francisco Giants. He spent the last two seasons with the Cubs and instantly became a fan favorite due to his heroics in the summer months of the season. The last two summers on the northside of Chicago were often referred to as the "Summer of Tauchman" and that magic would certainly be welcome back. Sights and sounds of an (early) summer of Mike Tauchman 😌#YouHaveToSeeIt | — Chicago Cubs (@Cubs) April 24, 2024 He is batting .297 with three home runs and a .957 OPS in 19 games and 67 at-bats so far this season. Those numbers are well above his .250 average and .732 OPS in his two seasons with the Cubs. Tauchman could provide much more depth than Brujan has given Chicago, and his familiarity with the players and the organization could make him a critical player not only on the field, but in the locker room as well. A trade for the former Cub could be exactly what the franchise needs to secure its first NL Central title and playoff appearance since the COVID-shortened 2020 season. Angels' Yoán Moncada Could Solve Cubs' Hole at Third Base
The Chicago Cubs left a clear path for top prospect Matt Shaw to claim the starting third base job heading into the 2025 season, and while his future remains extremely bright, a slow start and an early demotion back to Triple-A has left the hot corner as a major question mark. Veteran utility man Jon Berti has seen the bulk of the playing time since he was optioned, with light-hitting Nicky Lopez also making a handful of starts, and the result has been an ugly .180/.278/.209 line and zero home runs from the third base position in 2025. Advertisement At a certain point, the Cubs can't simply accept third base being an offensive black hole, and shuttling Shaw back and forth between Triple-A is only going to impede his development, so next time they call him up, they need to be confident he is in a position to succeed. In the meantime, swinging a trade for a low-cost veteran to help plug the hole makes sense, and Yoán Moncada is a trade target worth considering, one the Cubs actually showed interest in during the offseason. The longtime Chicago White Sox third baseman ultimately signed a one-year, $5 million deal with the Los Angeles Angels during the offseason, and he is hitting .244/.393/.511 for a 154 OPS+ with four doubles, two home runs, and 10 RBI in 56 plate appearances. Los Angeles Angels third baseman Yoan Moncada (5) celbrates after hitting a double during the sixth inning against the San Diego Padres at Petco Poroy-Imagn Images The oft-injured former top prospect has already taken a trip to the IL earlier this year with a thumb strain, but he has been swinging it well since returning on May 6, showing no ill-effects of the injury with a .292/.414/.708 line and five extra-base hits in seven games. Advertisement It won't take much in the way of prospect capital to acquire him if the Cubs are willing to absorb what's left of his 2025 salary, especially considering the Angels once again appear more likely to finish in the AL West cellar than they do to contend for a playoff spot. Jon Berti would increase Cubs earning to $3.3 million if he has 500 plate appearances
MESA, Ariz. (AP) — Infielder Jon Berti can earn $1.3 million in performance bonuses in addition to his $2 million base salary with the Chicago Cubs. Berti would get $150,000 each for 200 and 250 plate appearances as part of the deal announced Jan. 28. He would get $300,000 apiece for 400 and 450, and $400,000 for 500. Berti, who turned 35 on Jan. 22, was sidelined for much of last season because of a left calf strain. He hit .273 with a homer and six RBIs in 25 games for the New York Yankees. Berti made his big league debut with Toronto in 2018. The utilityman is a .259 hitter with 24 homers, 126 RBIs and 97 steals in 461 career games, also playing for Miami for five seasons. ___
