Cubs Predicted to Dump Ex-Yankees Role Player Before End of Season
The Chicago Cubs made moves at the trade deadline to help pass the Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Central. Could there still be more moves on the way?.
One of the moves the Cubs made at the deadline was acquiring Willi Castro from the Minnesota Twins. The Cubs designated Vidal Bruján for assignment to make room, but FanSided's Jordan Campbell predicted that Castro's arrival would lead to Jon Berti not being on the roster by the end of the year.

New"While Vidal Bruján was designated for assignment to make room for Castro, Jon Berti's role also figures to be impacted heavily," wrote Campbell. "All the positions that Berti plays are the same positions that Castro can play. All things being equal, Craig Counsell will likely defer to Castro as being the first man off the bench when a starter needs a day off. That doesn't bode well for Berti, who could lose his roster spot in the coming weeks if the Cubs want to fortify their bench with a top prospect such as Owen Caissie or Moises Ballesteros."
Berti played for the Yankees last season, and he slashed .273/.342/.318 in limited opportunities. He had just 74 plate appearances for the Yankees after dealing with injuries throughout the season. He is a versatile defender and can be a valuable role player.
In 106 plate appearances this season, he has a .496 OPS. However, he has played multiple positions for the Cubs this year. He is a prime candidate to be replaced by one of the Cubs' young prospects.

Yankees Cy Young Winner Achieves Major Milestone in Rehab from Tommy John Surgery

It's fun to think about for some, excruciating for others: How different could the New York Yankees' season have been had Gerrit Cole not gone down? In March, the Yankees announced that their ace, the six-time All-Star and 2023 American League Cy Young Award winner, would undergo Tommy John surgery and miss the entire season. It was a huge blow to a team coming off a World Series appearance with every intention of making it back. As the Yankees have gone through ups and downs on the field, Cole has had to sit in the dugout and drink in a full year's worth of baseball without being able to participate. But at long last, the superstar is on the mend. TAMPA, FLORIDA - FEBRUARY 28: Gerrit Cole #45 of the New York Yankees looks on in the dugout in the first inning during a spring training game against the Toronto Blue Jays at George M.... TAMPA, FLORIDA - FEBRUARY 28: Gerrit Cole #45 of the New York Yankees looks on in the dugout in the first inning during a spring training game against the Toronto Blue Jays at George M. Steinbrenner Field on February 28, 2025 in Tampa, Florida. MoreOn Monday, Cole began his throwing program, the first step in a long progression toward eventually pitching in a Major League Baseball game again after the surgery to repair the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. Cole threw 20 pitches on flat ground, exactly five months after he had the surgery on March 11. "It felt really good (Monday). I was fairly accurate and had a good time," Cole said, per Zach Braziller of the New York Post. "It's a big one, first day throwing. Been building up to it for a few weeks, so it's nice to get outside and get it accomplished and have it go well." Cole's version of Tommy John was the "internal brace" procedure, which is minimally invasive and often helps pitchers return to game action close to the year mark after their surgery, compared to those who get the full, original Tommy John procedure and often have to miss closer to 18 months. Max Fried has stepped in and done an admirable job in the No. 1 starter role, but to say the Yankees have missed Cole would still be no overstatement. Their starters rank 10th in ERA and 14th in innings pitched, stats typical of a borderline playoff team. Next, Cole will look to get on the mound at some point in the near future and continue his journey toward re-joining the rotation, ideally for New York by the start of next season. Yankees Projected to Fire Aaron Boone by End of Month
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The New York Yankees earned a much-needed win against the rebuilding Minnesota Twins on Monday, but it might not be enough to prevent a drastic change. Even after that win, the Yankees are in significant danger of missing the playoffs despite an aggressive offseason, several blockbuster trade deadline additions and one of the highest payrolls in Major League Baseball. As a result, the team could finally be ready to part ways with manager Aaron Boone in search of a needed solution. "Just one year after winning the American League and making it to the World Series, the Yankees are playing a brand of baseball fans barely recognize," Joseph Kallan wrote for FanSided. "Whether it's Boone's inconsistent lineups, questionable pitching decisions or lack of accountability, fans have seen and heard enough." Kallan listed Boone as a member of the Yankees who will be off the team by September 1, predicting that general manager Brian Cashman will "put his foot down and end the chaos" by relieving him. However, a midseason shakeup like that could intensify the chaos, at least in the short term. (Photo by) More Chambers/Getty It's exceedingly rare for a team still within a playoff hunt to fire its manager and the Yankees signed Boone to a two-year extension shortly after he reached the World Series last year. However, it's hard to argue that Cashman hasn't surrounded Boone with the type of talent that should be playing better. "No matter the midseason changes — or even offseason ones — Boone always seems to find creative ways to make matters worse," Kallan added. "The Yankees simply won't succeed as long as Boone is around, and deep down, Brian Cashman knows it's true." If Cashman has really reached that conclusion and can convince principal owner Hal Steinbrenner of the same, Boone could be out of a job within the next few weeks.
