FLAMES RETOOL TRACKER: Can Dustin Wolf avoid sophomore slump?

There is no real reason to just assume that Dustin Wolf is going to suffer from a sophomore slump. Article content Wolf's performances in the crease for the Calgary Flames throughout the 2024-25 season not only earned him a Calder Trophy nomination, they were also a major factor in the Flames staying in the playoff fight right until the very end. Article content Article content If Wolf can avoid any regression, it will at least give the Flames a shot next season. Article content Can he, though? The sophomore slump is infamous in every sport and the idea that players in their second year often take a step back is almost accepted as fact. Article content Is it true for goalies, though? Article content If we look at the three most recent goaltenders who earned Calder Trophy nominations, it's hard to come up with any real consensus. Article content Previous Calder nominees in Year 2 Article content Edmonton Oilers goaltender Stuart Skinner is the most recent example. After posting a .914 save percentage in his Calder-nominated season, he followed it up by posting a .905 mark in 2023-24. Article content A couple years earlier, Alex Nedeljkovic posted a .932 save percentage with the Carolina Hurricanes in 2020-21 to a .901 the next season when he was with the Detroit Red Wings. Article content A few years prior to that, Jordan Binnington earned a Calder nomination after putting up a .927 save percentage in 2018-19 with the St. Louis Blues and then followed it up with a .912 the next season. Article content So yes, all three saw their save percentage dip the season after they were named as one of the top three rookies of the year. Article content Article content Article content There are, of course, external factors that need to be considered: The context matters. Article content It's worth noting that when we dig just a little bit deeper, we can find goalies who burst onto the scene in their first full seasons and didn't get nominated for the Calder who subsequently saw their numbers improve in Year 2. Igor Shesterkin would be the best example, having posted a .916 save percentage in 2020-21 and then jumping to .935 the next season. Article content So there's no hard rule that goalies automatically will regress. Even among the three recent Calder nominees we did mention, Binnington backstopped Canada to 4 Nations Face-Off glory in February while Skinner is playing in the Stanley Cup Final right now, so the season-to-season drops in save percentage only tell us so much.

Denmark pulls off huge upset with 2-1 quarterfinal win over Canada at hockey worlds

HERNING — The third period of the world hockey championship quarterfinal between Canada and Denmark was dominated by a team that outshot its opponent 22-10 and scored a pair of game-breaking goals less than two minutes apart. But it was not 28-time champion Canada, captained by Sidney Crosby and loaded with top NHL talent, that showed the killer instinct Thursday at a rocking Jyske Bank Boxen arena. Plucky tournament co-host Denmark, which needed a shootout victory over Germany on the last day of preliminary round action just to reach the quarterfinals, saw Canada off with a 2-1 victory to the delight of their home fans. Canada was eliminated despite having a team with several players from its championship roster at this year's 4 Nations Face-Off, including Crosby, 2024 NHL MVP Nathan MacKinnon and goaltender Jordan Binnington. "We had looks (at the net), but they were not the looks we wanted to have," Canada coach Dean Evason said. "We did not get to the inside, and we did not do the things that we did all tournament to have success. "It came back to bite us, and obviously this is a devastating loss. We needed to be better in all areas, but unfortunately we were not. It is tough to swallow, and it is very frustrating and disappointing to come this far and fall short." With Canada clinging to a one-goal lead, the Danes pulled goaltender Frederik Dichow for an extra attacker with just under two minutes remaining. The move paid off when Nikolaj Ehlers — playing in just his second game of the tournament after joining Denmark following the elimination of the Winnipeg Jets from the NHL playoffs — fired a shot through traffic that eluded Binnington. Riding a wave of confidence, the Danes completed the upset when Nick Olesen picked up a rebound and scored with 49 seconds remaining, sending Denmark to the semifinals for the first time. '(The Danes) got some momentum from the tying goal, and it was a broken play (on the winning goal) that ended up in the back of our net," Crosby said. "They pressed pretty hard in the third period, and we were in a good spot after we took the lead, but things turned pretty quickly." Denmark owes much of its victory to Dichow, who stopped all 30 shots he faced over the opening two periods to frustrate the Canadians and give his team no shortage of swagger. Canada outshot Denmark 18-4 in the first period alone. Canada defenceman Travis Sanheim finally solved Sanheim at 5:17 of the third period, but the Danes would not back down. Binnington was called upon to make several saves as Canada held onto its tenuous lead before the Danes ultimately broke through. "(The Danes) blocked a lot of shots, and they found a way to get a couple (goals) late," Sanheim said. "We have to give them credit, they played hard the whole game and the crowd definitely helped them out. It is just an unfortunate and disappointing loss." Denmark appeared to open the scoring in the second period when Morten Poulsen scored on a breakaway, but the goal was disallowed due to a glove pass. Dichow, a Montreal Canadiens fifth-round pick in 2019 who plays for HV71 Jonkoping in Sweden, made 39 saves overall, while Binnington stopped 30 shots for Canada. Canada rolled into the quarterfinals after finishing first in Group A, ending the preliminary round with an emphatic 5-3 win over co-host Sweden in Stockholm. "There is a lot of disappointment," Crosby said. "We got better as the tournament went on, and while I do not think we were our best tonight, we were able to find a way to give ourselves a lead. It is disappointing because we have such a great group, but unfortunately we could not get it done." The Danes will face Switzerland, which routed Austria 6-0 on Thursday, in the semifinals on Saturday. The United States will take on Sweden in the other semifinal. Canada shocked by Denmark in major upset at men's hockey World Championship

Team Canada was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the World Championship in stunning fashion on Thursday thanks to a dramatic, 2-1 comeback victory for Denmark. Canada, led by the duo of NHL superstars Sidney Crosby and Nathan MacKinnon, had rolled through the tournament up until this point, suffering only a shootout loss to Finland while easily handling the field. Advertisement The Canadians, however, shockingly met their match in the quarterfinals. Most of the game was a scoreless tie featuring a goaltending duel between Canada's Jordan Binnington and Denmark's Frederik Dichow. Order seemed to be restored five minutes into the third period as Crosby set up Travis Sanheim for the game's initial goal and a Canada 1-0 lead. Canada held that lead until Denmark's Nikolaj Ehlers scored with 2:17 remaining in regulation to even the score. Ehlers' shot from the left point came with Denmark's goaltender pulled. The score didn't stay tied for long. Nick Oleson scored what will go down as one of the most memorable goals in Denmark's hockey history when he banged a rebound past Binnington for the winner. GAME. CHANGER. Nick Olesen sends @dkishockey through! 🇩🇰💥 #MensWorlds #IIHF — IIHF (@IIHFHockey) May 22, 2025 Dichow was the game's star, stopping 39 of Canada's 40 shots to backstop the major upset. Canada outshot Denmark 40-33. While Canada obviously wasn't showcasing its Olympic roster, its team still featured the likes of Crosby, MacKinnon and the very impressive Macklin Celebrini, not to mention Binnington, who led Canada to victory in the 4 Nations Face-Off in February. This also officially concludes Marc-André Fleury's hockey career. He was Binnington's backup in this game and confirmed last week that this tournament will mark the end of his career.
