Ohio Sate football to hire former NFL assistant to defensive staff
According to multiple reports, the Ohio State football program is set to make a hire just three weeks prior to the start of the season. Former NFL assistant, Josh Boyer, appears to be set to join the program, as first reported by ESPN's Pete Thamel. There's little doubt about the connection regarding the hire. Current Ohio State defensive coordinator Matt Patricia has a long history with Boyer while both worked for Bill Belichick and the Patriots. The two began working with each other in 2006, all the way until 2018 when Patricia left to become the head coach of the Detroit Lions. Boyer last post was with the Miami Dolphins as their defensive coordinator from 2020 to 2022. He is a native of Heath, Ohio, and played for Muskingum College before starting his coaching career as a graduate assistant at King's College in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. There has yet to be an announcement from the Ohio State football program on an official title. When that comes, we'll have it for you. Ohio State football to add longtime NFL assistant coach Josh Boyer to staff, per report
Ohio State is expected to hire Josh Boyer, a longtime NFL assistant coach, for an unspecified role on its support staff, according to a report from ESPN. Boyer was the defensive coordinator for the Miami Dolphins from 2020-22 after he spent 13 years as an assistant with the New England Patriots. Twelve out of his 13 years in New England overlapped with Matt Patricia, the Buckeyes' new defensive coordinator who was also then an assistant for legendary coach Bill Belichick. Boyer was a part of three Super Bowl championships with the Patriots. Boyer was an assistant in college, including as the defensive coordinator for the South Dakota School of Mines in 2005, before moving on to the NFL. Boyer also has ties to central Ohio as a native of Heath. He was an All-Ohio Athletic Conference defensive back at Muskingum. Ohio State has further expanded its support staff this offseason as quality control coaches, analysts and others in similar roles can be involved in coaching during practices and games to help its primary assistants. Ryan Day Adding Longtime NFL Coach To Ohio State's Staff
Ryan Day Adding Longtime NFL Coach To Ohio State's Staff originally appeared on The Spun. It worked the last time. Fresh off of leading the Buckeyes to a national championship last season, Ryan Day is once again reportedly dipping into the NFL's talent pool to add to Ohio State's coaching staff. According to ESPN's Pete Thamel, Day and the Bucks are looking to bring another ex-Patriots assistant to Columbus for the school's upcoming campaign. Per Thamel: "Ohio State is expected to add former Miami Dolphins DC and longtime NFL assistant coach Josh Boyer to the coaching staff. He brings a long familiarity with DC Matt Patricia, as Boyer worked for the Patriots from 2006-2018 and won three Super Bowls." The Buckeyes ranked No. 1 in the country on the defensive side of the ball in 2024, and Matt Patricia is looking to keep that going this fall as he attempts to put his fingerprints on OSU's scheme. "We have great coaches that are here, that were here last year, and I think it's my job to really kind of make sure I'm adapting and learning to what we did really well last year because, obviously, it was great," Patricia told reporters (via Eleven Warriors). "We have great coaches that coach these guys really well and develop these players at a high level. From that standpoint, there'll be some things that are very similar to what everybody's used to," Patricia continued. "I maybe teach a little bit differently… It's more conceptual and big picture and things like that ... to put guys in different roles." Boyer last coached for the Miami Dolphins from 2019-2022 after rising through the ranks with the Pats and working his way up from defensive assistant to cornerbacks coach under Bill Belichick. Patricia's time in Foxborough nearly mirrored Boyer's where he coached linebackers and safeties from 2006-2011 before being elevated to co-defensive coordinator from 2012-2017 and eventually taking the Lions head coaching job a year after that. Both Belichick disciples collected their share of hardware over the course of their decade-plus runs in New England. Now they'll be hoping to do the same as a part of one of the most storied programs in college football.
