Ohio Sate football to hire former NFL assistant to defensive staff

USA Today3 days ago
According to multiple reports, the Ohio State football program is set to make a hire just three weeks prior to the start of the season. Former NFL assistant, Josh Boyer, appears to be set to join the program, as first reported by ESPN's Pete Thamel.
There's little doubt about the connection regarding the hire. Current Ohio State defensive coordinator Matt Patricia has a long history with Boyer while both worked for Bill Belichick and the Patriots. The two began working with each other in 2006, all the way until 2018 when Patricia left to become the head coach of the Detroit Lions.
Boyer last post was with the Miami Dolphins as their defensive coordinator from 2020 to 2022. He is a native of Heath, Ohio, and played for Muskingum College before starting his coaching career as a graduate assistant at King's College in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.
There has yet to be an announcement from the Ohio State football program on an official title. When that comes, we'll have it for you.

Bengals coaches working to "showcase" Chase Brown's tools this season

Quarterback Joe Burrow isn't the only member of the Bengals who thinks running back Chase Brown has big things ahead of him this season. After a quiet rookie season, the 2023 fifth-round pick broke out with 1,350 yards from scrimmage and 13 touchdowns for the Bengals in 2024. That left offensive coordinator Dan Pitcher to call him "a top-10 back in the league" and he said the team wants Brown "ready to touch the ball as many times as possible.' That goal led the team's offensive coaches to rethink their run scheme for the 2025 season and running backs coach Justin Hill said the conversations were focused on Brown above all else. 'At the end of the conversation, it wasn't about what we think looks good on the board,' Hill said, via Charlie Goldsmith of the Associated Press. "[It was] what is Chase good at? How can we showcase his tools in the run game and in the pass game? Where we have in the run game right now is pretty true to who we think Chase is and what he can be.' The Bengals showed that they can feed plenty of mouths on offense in 2024. They'd like to do that again this season while also winning enough games to see if their revised approach can lead to a long postseason run.

Notre Dame has '26 commits Davis Jr., O'Brien on Rivals' 2025 preseason All-American team

Rivals 2025 Preseason High School Football Defense All-Americans ✅Read: Notre Dame's 2026 recruiting class has been in the news for a good portion of the offseason due to the high volume of top talent that the Fighting Irish were able to get committed. So the fact that ND was able to place two 2026 commits on Rivals' 2025 preseason high school All-American list comes as no surprise. Legacy recruit Thomas Davis Jr. is a 6-foot-2, 205-pound outside linebacker from Weddington (Matthews, NC) who was forever linked to Georgia, his father's alma mater, but Davis Jr. committed to ND three days after he visited the Fighting Irish during their 52-3 win over Florida State last fall. He recorded 92 tackles and 13.5 tackles for loss last season. Joining Davis Jr. on Rivals' list is Joey O'Brien from La Salle College (Glenside, PA), who helped lead a defense that only gave up 127 points in 11 games last season. The top safety prospect thought he was going to be enrolling at Oregon until he visited South Bend and fell in love with the atmosphere. The 6-foot-3, 185-pounder is dangerous playing offense as well, as he caught 68 passes for 1,029 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2024.
