Gilas Pilipinas takes on New Zealand in crucial FIBA Asia Cup match

Gilas Pilipinas will take on New Zealand tonight in a crucial match which may determine the Philippines' fate in the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup. The Philippines is coming off a 95-87 loss against Chinese Taipei and eyes to bounce back against the Tall Blacks, while New Zealand hopes to add another win to its record after beating Iraq in their opening game. Only the top team from each group will directly advance to the quarterfinals, while teams no. 2 and 3 will undergo a playoff for a quarterfinal spot. READ MORE | Group D standings "The bottom line is we got New Zealand coming up in two days, and we got to get ready for them. You know, this team has shown a lot of bounce back in the past, and I think we have a really good chance of coming out and playing a better, better game our next time out," Gilas head coach Tim Cone said about the Philippines' upcoming game against New Zealand. Tall Blacks head coach Judd Flavell, meanwhile, said going against the Philippines, along with Chinese Taipei and Iraq, will also help them in preparation for the tougher stages of the tournament. "Our pool is tough, but we like that because if we're going to be our best, you know, these teams are going to help us expose some areas in our game that we need to, and in pool play, a great place to do it in pool play to do it against three very good teams, and we have the Philippines next, which we know very much." Flavell said. "We've just played them in the qualifiers, as well, so we know each other very well, but that's going to help prepare us for the next stages of the tournament. So we're going to embrace that, and, you know, something for us to really look forward to, and, I think, you know, as you get later into those stages, you want to be at your best, so if we can learn our lessons like we did today, we learned our lessons in the first half, make some adjustments, see the growth from there, and then see where that leads us," he added. Back in November in the FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers, the Philippines had its first win ever against New Zealand 93-89, but the Tall Blacks bounced back in their February faceoff, 87-70. Gilas and New Zealand will face off at 11:00 p.m. —JKC, GMA Integrated News

Basketball: Tall Blacks beat Iraq in FIBA Asia Cup opener

Playing in 39 degree heat in Jeddah, the Tall Blacks guards found their range early, with Mojave King, Taylor Britt and Flynn Cameron combining for the team's first 11 points. The Tall Blacks managed to keep Iraq scoreless for a four-minute period to open up a 24-16 quarter time buffer. Britt knocked down a pair of free throws within 10 seconds of the second quarter starting but Iraq clawed themselves back into the game. Iraqi sharpshooter Ahmed Abdul scored five straight and Iraq nudged into the lead just before half-time. New Zealand fought hard in the third quarter before seven straight from point guard Britt saw the Tall Blacks take a two-point lead heading into the last period. Turnovers began to mount for Iraq and the Tall Blacks put the hammer down to outscore Iraq 37-17. Coach Judd Flavell was pleased with the Tall Blacks much improved second half. "I first wanted to acknowledge Iraq and the way that they came out and played. We were half a step late, our defence wasn't good enough. That gave them some good looks from the outside," Flavell said. "For our group in the second half, we were in a grind. We wanted to keep the pace high, so I feel like that sort-out rewarded us down the stretch there in the fourth quarter where we managed to get on top and obviously the scoreboard was in our favour from then on." Britt said they have to play with that level of intensity from the start. "I think we responded quite well, especially in that fourth quarter. Just putting out that level of intensity… that needs to be there from the first quarter of the game and going forward. But I guess it's a positive that we can do it for one quarter, but we've got to do it for four," Britt said. New Zealand meet the Philippines in the early hours of Friday morning. Tall Blacks 100 (Britt 19p, 7r, 4a, King 18p, Davison 14p, 7r) defeat Iraq 78 (Ahmed Abdul 19p, Hammoodi 15p) Q1: 24-16 HT: 42-43 Q3: 63-61 FT: 100-78

Jordan Ngatai to lead Tall Blacks for first time

Jordan Ngatai will captain the Tall Blacks at the FIBA Asia Cup. Photo: David Rowland/ Tall Blacks veteran Jordan Ngatai will lead the side at the FIBA Asia Cup in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, next month. Ngatai, 32, has played 84 games for the New Zealand team, but will captain the team for the first time at the two lead-up tournaments, both in China, as well as having the leadership reins in Jeddah. Ngatai made his debut in the black singlet almost 12 years ago, aged 20. Tall Blacks coach Judd Flavell said it was an easy decision to give Ngatai the captaincy. "He's just a great professional and somebody that has the ability to connect with people from all backgrounds and ages. Jordan's got the persona about him where he has the mana but is also very approachable. "So yeah, really excited for Jordan and it's something I know he'll take pride in fulfilling." Tall Blacks coach Judd Flavell has named a squad of 12 for the Asia Cup. Photo: Ngatai will lead the Wellington Saints against the Southland Sharks in the NBL final on Sunday, hoping to claim his fifth national league championship. But he had never really thought about being Tall Blacks captain. "It's a huge honour for not only myself, but for my family. "Honestly, I don't think I would have imagined myself being the captain of my national team - let-alone one of the veterans to last this long in a Tall Black singlet as well. "So, I think that in itself is an honour and I'm grateful for it." Ngatai, who is from Porirua, will lead a squad of 12 at the Asia Cup, which follows their lead-up tournaments, the FIBA Solidarity Cup in Guangdong , and Four Nations Tournament in Shenzhen. The Asia Cup squad includes three debutants - centre Jack Andrew (Taranaki Airs), guard Mohave King (Tauranga Whai), and guard Dontae Russo-Nance (Manawatū Jets) - while only Ngatai and forward Tohi Smith-Milner (69 games) have represented their country more than 50 times. Forward Ben Gold, who plays for Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is only available for the Asia Cup, while Jordan Hunt (Franklin Bulls), Hayden Jones (Nelson Giants) and Luca Yates are additions for the two lead-up tournaments. Tall Blacks tap teens for inaugural Throwdown series

Tall Blacks coach Judd Flavell has named a young team for the inaugural transtasman Throwdown series next week. He has selected four teenagers in the squad with just a handful of games between them. Hawke's Bay guard Jackson Ball is the youngest of the quartet at just 17. He scored 40 points for the Hawke's Bay Hawks in the opening game of the National Basketball League season and is averaging 21.4 points. He is joined in the side by a trio of 18-year-olds: Tama Isaac, Oscar Goodman and Julius Halaifonua. Isaac has been in good touch for the Canterbury Rams this season. The point guard is averaging 13.1 points and 4.8 assists. His older brother, Kaia, is on the Rams' roster as well. Halaifonua is a 2.13m redshirt freshman with Georgetown University and Goodman is at the University of Michigan. The pair have each played one game for the Tall Blacks, while Tama Isaac and Ball have made two appearances. At the other end of the experience spectrum is Corey Webster with 100 games. He will link up with experienced guards Reuben Te Rangi (71 games) and Shea Ili (71 games). There is a strong Canterbury Rams feel to the squad as well. Taylor Britt, Walter Brown and Max Darling take the Rams representation to six. There are some stars missing, though. The likes of Sam Timmins, Yanni Wetzell, Tyrell Harrison and Jordan Ngatai were unavailable. The Tall Blacks will play three games against the Boomers. Game 1 is in Adelaide on Tuesday. They play again on the Gold Coast three days later, and the final game of the series is in Hamilton on May 11. They will share the billing with the Tall Ferns, who are taking on the Australian Opals. The games are all double-headers. The fixture in Hamilton will mark the first time the Tall Ferns have played at home in five years. They have eight uncapped players in their squad of 14.
