Gilas Pilipinas takes on New Zealand in crucial FIBA Asia Cup match
The Philippines is coming off a 95-87 loss against Chinese Taipei and eyes to bounce back against the Tall Blacks, while New Zealand hopes to add another win to its record after beating Iraq in their opening game.
Only the top team from each group will directly advance to the quarterfinals, while teams no. 2 and 3 will undergo a playoff for a quarterfinal spot.

"The bottom line is we got New Zealand coming up in two days, and we got to get ready for them. You know, this team has shown a lot of bounce back in the past, and I think we have a really good chance of coming out and playing a better, better game our next time out," Gilas head coach Tim Cone said about the Philippines' upcoming game against New Zealand.
Tall Blacks head coach Judd Flavell, meanwhile, said going against the Philippines, along with Chinese Taipei and Iraq, will also help them in preparation for the tougher stages of the tournament.
"Our pool is tough, but we like that because if we're going to be our best, you know, these teams are going to help us expose some areas in our game that we need to, and in pool play, a great place to do it in pool play to do it against three very good teams, and we have the Philippines next, which we know very much." Flavell said.
"We've just played them in the qualifiers, as well, so we know each other very well, but that's going to help prepare us for the next stages of the tournament. So we're going to embrace that, and, you know, something for us to really look forward to, and, I think, you know, as you get later into those stages, you want to be at your best, so if we can learn our lessons like we did today, we learned our lessons in the first half, make some adjustments, see the growth from there, and then see where that leads us," he added.
Back in November in the FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers, the Philippines had its first win ever against New Zealand 93-89, but the Tall Blacks bounced back in their February faceoff, 87-70.
Gilas and New Zealand will face off at 11:00 p.m.

Calvin Oftana a game-time decision in Gilas Pilipinas' KO match vs. Saudi Arabia
Gilas Pilipinas could have a manpower shortage in its knockout game against host Saudi Arabia in the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup with Calvin Oftana a game-time decision due to an ankle injury. National team head coach Tim Cone said Oftana's availability will be decided on the fly for their qualification game, set for 12 a.m. Tuesday at King Abdullah Sports City in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Oftana was visibly in pain with 3:19 left in their game against Iraq last Saturday after he hurt his right ankle while going for a rebound and entangling with big man Ihab Al-Zuhairi near the free throw line. The TNT sharpshooter never returned to the court since being helped to the bench, finishing with three points, four rebounds, three assists, three steals, and one block in their 66-57 victory. "[He is a] game-time decision," Cone told GMA News Online in a short message. The ankle injury was the same one he sustained during Tropang 5G's grueling finals series against San Miguel in the PBA Season 49 Philippine Cup just a couple of weeks ago. In fact, the 29-year-old gunner was already doubtful for the Asia Cup as he sat out their friendly game against the Macau Black Bears last July 28 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. ?With Oftana's status uncertain, Gilas will lean more on Justin Brownlee alongside other usual suspects Dwight Ramos, Scottie Thompson, AJ Edu, and June Mar Fajardo as they shoot for a QF spot. —JMB, GMA Integrated News

Gilas Pilipinas shoots for FIBA Asia QF spot in do-or-die match vs Saudi Arabia
The stakes couldn't be higher as Gilas Pilipinas tangles with host Saudi Arabia in a midnight Tuesday showdown that will decide who advances to the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup quarterfinals in Jeddah. The Filipinos and the Saudis will meet again after three years at the King Abdullah Sports City at 12 a.m., with the winner setting a QF date with no less than two-time defending champion Australia. With a lot on the line, both teams expect a dogfight. Gilas Pilipinas head coach Tim Cone said he understands it's going to be a tough road ahead for his crew, especially with how they fared in their last three games against Chinese Taipei, New Zealand, and Iraq. The Filipinos struggled early on after dropping their matches to Chinese Taipei and the Tall Blacks, but found their breakthrough win against the Iraqis as they punched their ticket to the qualification to quarterfinals. Still, there's no letup for Gilas. "We know the road is going to be tough, we know we picked a tougher road to go but we're ready to accept that challenge," Cone stressed following their 66-57 win over Iraq last Saturday. "It's tough when you're playing on your heels and playing behind all the time, which we did against Chinese Taipei and we did it again against New Zealand but what I like about our team is we just don't quit." Same goes for Saudi Arabia, which sees the Philippines as among the top contenders in the tournament despite a 1-2 win-loss card in Group D. "We have our next match, it's not [gonna be] easy, it's very difficult. But everyday is difficult so we'll give our best," Saudi Arabia head coach Ricard Casas said. "Of course it's very important in these next hours to prepare for the game because we'll play against a good team, the Philippines. It's top-level in the FIBA rankings, they have excellent players." The Philippines and Saudi Arabia have met only three times in FIBA tournaments, with the Filipinos winning on all occasions, the last of which was a 76-63 win during the fifth window of 2023 FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers in Jeddah as well. Kai Sotto led the way along with RR Pogoy and CJ Perez in that 13-point victory. But Gilas isn't putting much weight on the past, choosing instead to embrace the challenges at hand. Justin Brownlee is once again expected to spearhead Gilas' offense, but Cone urged the rest of the squad to step up amid the defensive focus on the naturalized forward. Dwight Ramos, who scored a team-high 21 points in their last game, is tipped to provide the huge lift alongside the front court tandem of June Mar Fajrdo and AJ Edu and the veteran presence of Scottie Thompson. Gilas, though, might be one man down with Calvin Oftana hurting his ankle in their last outing. "We have to use Justin not just to be as a scorer for us, but we can play off of him because he does draw so much attention," Cone added. "And we actually made our run in that second quarter with Justin out of the game so everybody was like more involved." —JMB, GMA Integrated News
