Generate Key Takeaways Fan-fave singers John Foster and Jamal Roberts have both advanced to the Top 7 of American Idol, joining Slater Nalley, Thunderstorm Artis, Gabby Samone, Breanna Nix, and Mattie Pruitt. This is undoubtedly one of the strongest lineups in the show's 23-season history. The contestants performed Monday night during the "Judge's Song Contest" episode in which Luke Bryan, Carrie Underwood, and Lionel Richie picked the tunes. After all was said and done, host Ryan Seacrest announced that John, Jamal, Slater, Thunderstorm, Gabby, and Breanna had made it into America's Top 6, and that Josh King and Mattie were the Bottom 2. More from GoldDerby As co-winners of the contest, Luke and Lionel chose to save Mattie, making Josh the latest person eliminated from ABC's reality TV show. Ironically, Josh's last performance on the show was "Home," about a person's desire to return home — he got his wish. John Foster (age 18 from Addis, La.) performed "I Cross My Heart" by George Strait (chosen by Carrie). Carrie raved that he delivered an "absolutely perfect" rendition, claiming, "Hearing you sing that song felt comfortable. That was one of your best performances." And Luke apologized for doubting him earlier in the competition, saying, "It was the perfect song for you. You're singing better and better every week." Jamal Roberts (age 27 from Meridian, Miss.) belted out "I Believe" by Fantasia (chosen by Lionel). Carrie said he "delivered it beautifully." Lionel raved, "Your execution of that song had me crying. You're a phenomenon." And Luke noted, "I don't know if I've ever seen anybody connect the heart to the head to the voice like you're able to do. You made tears well up in our eyes. That is God-given." Neither John nor Jamal has never been in the bottom of the voting results. Their social media views are always through the roof, and they frequently top Gold Derby's polls for who performed best on a given night. When asked the question "Who will win American Idol?" in our predictions center, our readers forecast that it'll be either John, Jamal, or Slater. Throughout the competition, John has performed scene-stealing numbers like "In Color," "Callin' Baton Rouge," "Tell That Angel I Love Her," "Neon Moon," "Jailhouse Rock," "I Told You So," and "Something to Talk About." And Jamal brought the house down with his renditions of "Tennessee Whiskey," "Liar," "Forever," "Try a Little Tenderness," "Shout," "Heal," and "Undo It." Next week on American Idol, there's a double-dose of Disney. The Top 7 artists travel to Disney World where they'll be mentored by Lin-Manuel Miranda. On Sunday, the Top 5 will be revealed, and on Monday that number drops down to the Top 3. Who are you rooting for to win Season 23? Be sure to sound off in our reality TV forum. 'American Idol's Jamal Roberts Reveals What Song He Wants to 'Bring Out of the Hat' This Season (Exclusive)

The fact that Jamal Roberts bestowed both of his daughters with musical names – Harmoni, 6, and Lyrik, 3 – is a definite testament to his devotion to music. In fact, he joked with Parade that he had to argue with their mamas to make it happen. 'I always said, even before I had kids, that I was going to name my kids after music,' the 27-year-old PE teacher from Meridian, MS, said. 'If I had another girl, she would be Melody. And then I had thought about Symphony, all these beautiful names. I love my daughters. They are my world, my life. They're the reason I'm here and working so hard to keep smiles on those little faces.' Jamal has been singing since he was 2 years old, so he has been pretty much locked into music since he was a toddler. It was his grandparents who inspired him, urging him to Sunday morning services and encouraging him to always do his best. 🎬🎬 As a result, he grew up singing Michael Jackson and The Temptations' songs. And when he gets a chance, he plans to bring one of their songs to the Idol stage. That opportunity may come tonight, when the Top 8 perform songs selected by Luke Bryan, Lionel Richie or Carrie Underwood in the 'Judge's Song Contest.' 'I do think I'm going to try to do a Temptations song,' Jamal told Parade at the Hulu Get Real event. 'I'm going to try to bring it out of the hat. I've seen so many comments and so many fans and viewers and friends that were like, 'You should get up there and do a Temptations song.' I'm going to try to get up there and give it a try.' Related: As mentioned, Jamal is a PE Teacher, not a music teacher. And during this run on American Idol, he's been receiving lots of messages and videos from his students back home, which makes him feel that he's doing something right, that all these young kids are looking up to him. Related: 'I never wanted to move out of Meridian, actually,' he says when asked why he didn't relocate somewhere where it would be easier to launch his music career. 'I'm not a fan of traffic; Meridian doesn't have traffic. You don't have to wait hours to eat. Things like that that just became normal for me. When you go out of town, things are different. But growing up, I had a good experience in Meridian. Now, it's not like it used to be. It's changed, but I believe it can get back, and I believe I can help it get that way.' Idol may just be his ticket to accomplish that, especially if he makes it to the Top 5 and beyond. And if his performance of Tom Odell's "Heal" – the most watched video of the Top 10 – is any indication, he's on his way. And helping him to achieve his goals, in addition to the advice he gets each week from Luke, Lionel and Carrie, is the expertise he receives from the behind-the-scenes vocal coaches. Related: 'I have the best coaches in the world literally,' he says. 'They help me push myself to my full potential, and the judges are just so supportive. I do believe if there ever came a time where they had to critique me, they will, but right now they're telling me I'm in my own lane and just keep exploding on the stage basically.' American Idol airs Sunday and Monday nights at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC. Streams next day on Hulu. Next, Make Your Vote Count! How to Vote Online or By Text on 2025

After an exciting round of performances and live voting, the following singers advanced to the Top 8: John Foster Jamal Roberts Mattie Pruitt Breanna Nix Thunderstorm Artis Slater Nalley Gabby Samone Josh King Each of these contestants impressed both the judges and viewers at home, earning enough votes to continue their journey toward becoming the next American Idol. Who was eliminated? Unfortunately, the night came to an end for two contestants: Canaan James Hill Kolbi Jordan Both singers delivered heartfelt performances but ultimately did not secure enough votes to move forward. What's next for contestants? The Top 8 return to the stage on Monday night for the fan-favourite Judge's Song Contest, where each judge picks a song for the contestants to sing, without revealing who chose which one.
