Indore: The Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association (MPCA) on Monday awarded prizes totaling Rs 4.7 crore to players, teams, and divisions for their performances in the 2023-24 and 2024-25 seasons. The annual awards ceremony, held at the Brilliant Convention Centre in Indore, also honoured former cricketers and officials with lifetime achievement awards. Syed Gulrez Ali, a former MP cricketer who played 74 first-class matches in the 1960s, received the C K Sarwate Lifetime Achievement Award and Rs 5 lakh cash with citation. Reflecting on his playing days, Ali said, "We travelled in third-class compartments, stayed in dharamshalas, and had only Rs 10 in our pockets. Today's players deserve more, as cricket thrives because of them." The Madhavrao Scindia Lifetime Achievement Award for 2023-24 was presented to S K Bais for his contributions both as a player and administrator, especially in infrastructure development. A new category was introduced to recognise international debutants, with each player awarded Rs 5 lakh. The recipients included Kranti Goud and Shuchi Upadhye (Senior India Women), Soham Patwardhan and Rohit Rajawat (Junior India Men), and Vaishnavi Sharma and Ayushi Shukla (Junior India Women). Performance-based awards were also presented. Shubham Sharma was named Best Senior Men's Cricketer, Yashbardhan Singh Chouhan Best Junior Men's Cricketer, and Soumya Tiwari Best Senior Women's Cricketer. The Chandra Nayudu Award for Best Junior Women's Cricketer was jointly shared by Shreya Dixit and Dhani Buchade. Among bowlers, Anjesh Pal (U-16) and Rohit Rajawat (U-19, Narendra Hiwani Award) were recognised as the best spin bowlers. The senior men's team, runners-up in the 2024-25 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, received Rs 70 lakh-Rs 30 lakh from MPCA and Rs 40 lakh from BCCI. The senior women's team, champions of the limited-overs championship, were awarded Rs 75 lakh, including Rs 25 lakh from MPCA and Rs 50 lakh from BCCI. Union minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, who attended the event with his son Mahanaaryaman Scindia, praised the achievements of MP cricketers. "This is an occasion that celebrates the capability of our sportsmen and women. Our girls have carried MPCA's torch to new heights. Rajat Patidar carried the flag for RCB. It's game time in Jalandhar, and Sri Guru Gobind Singh College in Chandigarh Sector 26 is sending a power-packed contingent to the turf. Nine of its finest hockey talents have been named in the Chandigarh squad for the prestigious 15th Junior Men National Hockey Championship, being held from August 12 to 23 in Punjab's hockey heartland. Leading the charge is captain Prabhjot Singh, a BA second-year student, Junior National (Chandigarh) silver medallist, and Junior India camper, with Fateh Singh as vice-captain. The formidable line-up also includes Premjeet Singh, Sharandeep Singh, Rishav, Sukhampal Singh, Satnam Singh, Mohd Zaid, and Dheeraj. Professor (Dr) Gurcharan Singh Gill, the team in-charge, and principal Dr Jaswinder Singh have expressed confidence in the squad. 'We wish our team the very best and hope they make us proud,' said Dr Jaswinder Singh, adding that he expects the players to bring glory to both the college and the Chandigarh team. CG's Anisha & Geeta selected in Indian squad for hockey tourney in Argentina

Raipur: Anisha Sahu and Geeta Yadav from Chhattisgarh, who are part of the Junior India core team training in Bengaluru, have been selected for the four nations hockey tournament to be held in Rosario, Argentina. This tour is part of the preparations for the upcoming Junior Women's World Cup 2025 . From this 24-member team, outstanding performers will be selected for the FIH Hockey Junior Women's World Cup scheduled in December. Notably, Anisha has been a member of the junior team for the past four years, and Geeta joined the Junior India team two years ago, securing her place through her performance. Chhattisgarh Hockey spokespersons stated that the four nations tournament will be held from May 25 to June 2. Four countries— Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, and India— will participate in the tournament. The Indian team will play two matches against each participating country to evaluate their performance, assess team combinations, and refine strategies. Before participating in the tournament, Anisha has already toured Belgium, Netherlands, and Germany. This will be her third tour representing the Junior Women's India team. Geeta has also achieved this milestone in a short period, securing her place in the team within two years. She has previously toured the Netherlands and Belgium. They said that it is a matter of great pride that two daughters of the state are going to play for the country. Geeta hails from Bodla village in Kabirdham district, where her first coach, Shiv Singh Chauhan, taught her to play hockey. Later, she moved to Rajnandgaon and honed her skills under the guidance of coach Anuraj Srivastava. Subsequently, she was selected for the Khelo India Center in Bahatarai, Bilaspur. Both players have represented Chhattisgarh in national competitions for several years. In the upcoming tournament, India will play its first match against Chile. CM Sai and Assembly Speaker Dr Raman Singh have congratulated the players.
