LBJ wrestler Rendon finding home, success in sport

AUSTIN (KXAN) — When Michaela Rendon began as a wrestler, it wasn't the most encouraging start. 'My first match, I didn't know what to do,' Rendon said. 'So I kind of just screamed in the middle. I didn't win.'Seven months later, the sport seems like it has always been a part of her life. 'I like the sport because it's a one-man sport,' she said. 'You can't really rely on a team like in football. It's really just you and the other person. That's what it comes down to.' Despite being newer to the sport, Rendon has excelled. She qualified for the Junior National Championships in Fargo, North Dakota, this July. 'What makes Michaela special is the idea of an athlete being what I would call complete,' said Randy Bryant, principal of LBJ High School. 'She does what's necessary inside the classroom and she's doing what's necessary to be successful at athletics.' Bryant is also the owner of Heart and Pride Wrestling, where Michaela trains. The club is free for students from the Austin Independent School District. National championship-winning coach questions all the Arch Manning hype 'Some gyms you can tell when it's just about the money, but I feel like they really want to help out the kids and they're just genuine,' she said. Rendon is an athlete in every sense of the word. She's been successful in track and field and football, as well as boxing. She said that her boxing background has helped her in wrestling. Her goal in wrestling is simple. 'I want to win state,' she said. She has helped revitalize the wrestling program at LBJ. There should be around 20 athletes in the program for the upcoming season, a turnout much higher than it typically is. 'It feels good. Raipur: Rising badminton talent Tanoo Chandra brought pride to Chhattisgarh by clinching the girls' singles title at the prestigious Khelo India Youth Games held in Bihar. Her consistent performance and dominance were evident throughout the national-level competition. Tanoo showcased remarkable form during the tournament. In the semi-final clash, she defeated Adhira Rajkumar of Tamil Nadu in straight games, narrowly winning a closely fought first game 22-20 before comfortably securing the second with a 21-15 score. The final witnessed a commanding performance from Tanoo as she outclassed Risika Nandi of Delhi 21-15, 21-09, winning the title without conceding a single game in the knockout stages. This victory adds another feather to Tanoo Chandra's cap. Hailing from Thathari village in the Sakti district of Chhattisgarh, she has emerged as one of the most promising talents in Indian junior badminton . Notably, she also clinched a gold medal at the Junior National Championships held in Bhubaneswar in 2024.

Ludhiana girl Japleen clinches 3 gold medals in skating at 68th National School Games

Japleen Kaur, a 17-year-old student of Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School, BRS Nagar, has made Punjab proud by bagging three gold medals at the 68th National School Games held in New Delhi from April 30 to May 3. Representing Punjab's Roller-Skating Team, Japleen dominated the competition with victories in the track 500m, 1,000m, and 3,000m road races. Her performance earned her the prestigious Komal Khatri Award for being the best female skater of the event. Japleen's journey in roller skating began in 2016 under the mentorship of coach JS Dhaliwal. Since 2018, she has represented Punjab in national-level tournaments, building an impressive medal tally over the years. Recently, she clinched two bronze medals at the Senior National Roller-Skating Championship held in Mysore in December 2024. She also won one gold, one silver, and two bronze medals at the Junior National Championships in Chennai, along with another bronze at the National School Games in Satna, Madhya Pradesh in April 2024. Her talent has placed her among the probables for the Indian team heading to the 20th Asian Roller-Skating Championship in South Korea. She also took part in the selection trials for the 2022 Asian Games in China and represented Punjab at the 36th National Games in Ahmedabad. Japleen's mother, Kirti Soni, shared that her daughter began skating in Class UKG. 'We introduced skating in her life to keep her away from too much television. It started as a hobby and slowly became a passion. Her father was a table tennis player, so sports run in the family,' she said. Meanwhile, other players from Ludhiana also bagged medals in various events. Vansh Rawat impressed with two gold medals in the Track 1,000m and Road 1 Lap race, along with a bronze in the Track 500+D. Armaan added to the tally with a silver in the Track 500+D and two bronzes in the Track 1,000m and Road 1 Lap race. Kumud Jain secured a silver in the Track 1,000m and a bronze in the Road 3,000m race.
