Ludhiana girl Japleen clinches 3 gold medals in skating at 68th National School Games
Japleen Kaur, a 17-year-old student of Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School, BRS Nagar, has made Punjab proud by bagging three gold medals at the 68th National School Games held in New Delhi from April 30 to May 3.
Representing Punjab's Roller-Skating Team, Japleen dominated the competition with victories in the track 500m, 1,000m, and 3,000m road races. Her performance earned her the prestigious Komal Khatri Award for being the best female skater of the event.
Japleen's journey in roller skating began in 2016 under the mentorship of coach JS Dhaliwal. Since 2018, she has represented Punjab in national-level tournaments, building an impressive medal tally over the years. Recently, she clinched two bronze medals at the Senior National Roller-Skating Championship held in Mysore in December 2024. She also won one gold, one silver, and two bronze medals at the Junior National Championships in Chennai, along with another bronze at the National School Games in Satna, Madhya Pradesh in April 2024.
Her talent has placed her among the probables for the Indian team heading to the 20th Asian Roller-Skating Championship in South Korea. She also took part in the selection trials for the 2022 Asian Games in China and represented Punjab at the 36th National Games in Ahmedabad.
Japleen's mother, Kirti Soni, shared that her daughter began skating in Class UKG. 'We introduced skating in her life to keep her away from too much television. It started as a hobby and slowly became a passion. Her father was a table tennis player, so sports run in the family,' she said. Meanwhile, other players from Ludhiana also bagged medals in various events.
Vansh Rawat impressed with two gold medals in the Track 1,000m and Road 1 Lap race, along with a bronze in the Track 500+D. Armaan added to the tally with a silver in the Track 500+D and two bronzes in the Track 1,000m and Road 1 Lap race. Kumud Jain secured a silver in the Track 1,000m and a bronze in the Road 3,000m race.

City's three young speed skaters won six medals at the 8th National Speed Skating Ranking Championship 2025 held in Kerala from May 15 to 20. Under the guidance of coach Jugadhbir Singh Grewal, the talented team showcased their speed, stamina, and spirit on the national stage. Armaan was followed by Vansh Rawat, 17, a student of Jesus Sacred Heart Convent School who won a silver medal in the Road 1-lap race. He had also won two gold and one bronze medals at the National School Games, underlining his status as one of the rising stars of Indian speed skating. Also making her mark was a 17-year-old Kumud Jain, also a student of Jesus Sacred Heart Convent School, who won bronze medal in Track 1000-metre event. Like her teammates, Kumud had also won silver and a bronze medal at the Delhi games. Together, the skaters had competed in eight events at the National School Games—and returned with medals, proving their consistency and excellence at the highest level. Their back-to-back medal-winning performances are setting new records and raising the bar for speed skating in the state.

D-backs in search of traction against downtrodden Rockies
The Arizona Diamondbacks will get their first view at the new-look Colorado Rockies this weekend, although the Rockies have looked a lot like their old selves since owner Dick Monfort fired manager Bud Black on Sunday. Buoyed by the return of Ketel Marte, the Diamondbacks have won three of five games, while going 8-8 in a 16-games-in-16-days stretch against playoff contenders. They break from that gauntlet for a three-game series against the Rockies that begins Friday in Phoenix. Colorado, meanwhile, was swept in a three-game series at Texas that ended Wednesday under interim manager Warren Schaeffer, who was promoted Sunday. Right-hander Corbin Burnes (2-1, 2.95 ERA) is scheduled to start for the D-backs. The Rockies have not announced a starter. Marte had two homers in an 8-7 victory against the Giants in the deciding game of a three-gamer series Wednesday. He was removed for a pinch hitter because of hip stiffness in the seventh inning, but the D-backs do not consider it serious. "It is great for us to get a day off after 16 games in a row," Arizona shortstop Geraldo Perdomo said. "I feel like we played decent. But we are going to find a way to go back to winning more games." Marte has all five of his homers since May 8, not long after returning to the active roster following a month on the injured list with a Grade 1 right hamstring strain. Raipur: Rising badminton talent Tanoo Chandra brought pride to Chhattisgarh by clinching the girls' singles title at the prestigious Khelo India Youth Games held in Bihar. Her consistent performance and dominance were evident throughout the national-level competition. Tanoo showcased remarkable form during the tournament. In the semi-final clash, she defeated Adhira Rajkumar of Tamil Nadu in straight games, narrowly winning a closely fought first game 22-20 before comfortably securing the second with a 21-15 score.
