Mets makes pitching move due to injury

The post Mets makes pitching move due to injury appeared first on ClutchPoints. The New York Mets kick off their season series against the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday night. Before then, though, Carlos Mendoza and the team made some roster changes. After Tylor Megill went on the 15-day injured list with an elbow sprain, Justin Garza will rejoin the team in the major leagues. Megill joins Kodai Senga on the IL, putting Mendoza's starting rotation in a tough spot. Advertisement New York announced on their social media page on Tuesday that Garza was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse. This marks his second stint with the Mets in 2025. However, with Megill and Senga out of the rotation, he could be with the team long enough to make more than three appearances. He joins Mendoza's bullpen ahead of a crucial week for New York. The Mets have a three-game series against the Braves, followed by a trip to Philadelphia to take on the Phillies. The latter series will go a long way in determining the pecking order in the National League East. However, Senga's hamstring injury and Megill's elbow sprain put an asterisk on the Mets' games this week. Despite the loss of two starters, Mendoza's expectations remain high. The pressure shifts to Garza to deliver in his relief appearances as New York tries to regain their momentum. The Tampa Bay Rays swept the Mets over the weekend. The three consecutive losses marked the first time New York failed to win a single game in a series. While Mendoza talks down the importance of the series, it showed concerns for the Mets. However, New York has more than enough talent to rebound. Being without Megill and Senga makes things much more difficult, though. Advertisement The Braves might be in the middle of a disappointing season, but they are still dangerous. Mendoza has his work cut out for him over the next two weeks. Senga's injury does not look good, and Megill's absence leaves Clay Holmes and David Peterson as the only starters left. However, if Garza and the Mets can survive without their starters, they could still be near the top of the league. Frankie Montas is close to making his debut with New York this season, and Sean Manaea's recovery continues to go well. Mendoza hopes that Garza's addition to the Mets' bullpen helps the team weather the storm thrown at them. If New York can make it through the next couple of weeks, their starters will return and help. However, two division series will ask a lot of a Mets team that is missing key pieces. Mets place RHP Tylor Megill (elbow) on 15-day injured list

June 17 - The New York Mets placed right-hander Tylor Megill on the 15-day injured list on Tuesday because of a right elbow sprain. The move is retroactive to Sunday. In a corresponding move, the Mets recalled right-hander Justin Garza from Triple-A Syracuse. Megill, 29, last pitched on Saturday, allowing six runs (three earned) on seven hits and two walks with five strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings of an 8-4 loss to the visiting Tampa Bay Rays. Megill also hit two batters in his worst outing of the season. He is 5-5 with a 3.95 ERA, 33 walks and 89 strikeouts in 68 1/3 innings over 14 starts this season. Megill is a career 26-26 with a 4.46 ERA, 163 walks and 435 strikeouts in 409 2/3 innings in 88 games (81 starts) since the 2021 season. The Mets selected Megill in the eighth round of the 2018 MLB Draft out of the University of Arizona. Garza, 31, is 0-0 this season with no runs or walks allowed and two strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings over three relief appearances for New York. The Mets purchased him on June 7 from the San Francisco Giants, for whom he pitched at Triple-A Sacramento earlier this season and went 1-2 with six saves and a 6.11 ERA in 17 2/3 innings over 19 relief appearances. For his career, Garza is 2-3 with a 5.33 ERA, 30 walks and 48 strikeouts in 50 2/3 innings over 41 games (one start) for Cleveland (2021), Boston (2023) and New York. --Field Level Media

Mets place Tylor Megill on IL as pitching injuries mount

Mets pitcher Tylor Megill was placed on the 15-day injured list because of a sprained right elbow in the latest blow to the team's pitching staff. The IL stint will be retroactive to June 15 and the team called up Justin Garza from Triple-A Syracuse in a corresponding move. Tylor Megill #38 of the New York Mets reacts on the mound after giving up runs to the Rays. Jason Szenes / New York Post Megill told reporters inside the Mets' clubhouse on Tuesday that he had felt a 'pulling' in his elbow during Saturday's start against the Rays. The Mets pitcher also revealed that his MRI results showed 'a lot of inflammation around the elbow.' Mets pitcher Tylor Megill (38) pitches against the Chicago White Sox. Robert Sabo for NY Post Garza, 31, acquired from the Giants earlier this month, last pitched in the major leagues in 2023 with the Red Sox, for whom he posted a 7.36 ERA in 17 appearances.

New Mets pitcher Justin Garza credits video game MLB The Show for helping save career

Pitcher Justin Garza was thinking about quitting the game he loved during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 as he struggled in the minor leagues. However, as Garza is joining the New York Mets now after a deal with the San Francisco Giants, he credits one thing to saving his career. A video game. "MLB The Show actually was a big part about me learning how to pitch and figuring out how to pitch," Garza told The New York Post. "It's so realistic at times, just playing that video game." Garza is not the only player in professional sports to use video games to prepare for games or rework their mechanics. Garza specifically uses the game mode Diamond Dynasty, where he said the different camera angles helped him experience how to use his pitches. Using a catcher's view to pitch, he started reworking his arsenal. Though it was not intentional, he was happy something clicked by playing the game. "Once I started to play more and more, it was like, 'OK, well, I actually have a cutter, I have this four-seam, I have this changeup, and maybe my stuff can play like this," Garza told The Post. Garza was an eighth-round draft pick by the Cleveland Guardians in 2015, but he struggled in his first taste of professional ball. He was only able to post one season with an ERA under five, owning a 3.36 ERA in 2018. However, the pandemic break saw Garza as a rejuvenated hurler on the mound. Garza posted a 1.59 ERA with 31 strikeouts over 14 games in Triple-A Columbus before being called up for the first time in his career. He had 21 appearances in 2021 in the big leagues. He did not make it back to the big leagues until 2023, this time with the Boston Red Sox, but it did not go according to plan. Garza had an 8.35 ERA in 17 appearances (one start) before being moved to the Giants. Garza was in Triple-A Sacramento this year before moving to the Mets. Garza has played one game with the Mets, tossing two-thirds of an inning with two strikeouts in his first appearance. Mets get pitching boost in trade with Giants

The post Mets get pitching boost in trade with Giants appeared first on ClutchPoints. The New York Mets have been near the top of the National League East for the entire season. However, the team does have holes on it, especially in their bullpen. Advertisement Mets closer Edwin Diaz seems to be back to his normal level of play. However, Carlos Mendoza could use some more depth around him besides Reed Garrett. New York acquired relief pitcher Justin Garza in a deal with the San Francisco Giants on Saturday to bolster the bullpen. The Mets gave the Giants cash considerations in exchange for the 31-year-old pitcher, according to New York Post writer Mike Puma. Garza never pitched in the major leagues for San Francisco, another NL contender. The righty has two years of experience in Major League Baseball with the Cleveland Guardians and Boston Red Sox. His 2-3 career record in 38 appearances, combined with his 5.74 career ERA are unattractive. However, New York hopes that a change of scenery is all he needs to improve. At this point in their season, the Mets are concerned with making small tweaks to their roster. New York's starting rotation is among the best in the league as well as their offense. When the game is turned over to their relievers, things get shaky. Advertisement Garza comes in as a pitcher who could be called upon to eat innings after a short start in order to hand the game over to Garrett and Mendoza's other relievers. The Mets will have a week and a half to implement Garza into their bullpen strategy. After that, New York enters one of the most important nine-game stretches of their season. Two series against the Atlanta Braves sandwich a showdown with their main division rival in 2025, the Philadelphia Phillies. With Diaz back to his peak form, New York is formidable. All the Mets need now is for Juan Soto to overcome his slow start to his first season with the team. Bringing in Garza from the Giants could be nothing more than another arm for Mendoza to call up and use at his convenience. However, if the reliever proves himself, he could emerge as a bulk reliever, a great tool for a contender to have.
