Boy, 13, dies after being thrown into river over £40 debt

An aspiring teenage footballer has died after being allegedly thrown into a fast-flowing river over a £40 debt. Abdou Ngom, 13, was allegedly thrown into the Tanaro River in Verduno, Piedmont region, Italy, after he and four boys travelled there from their homes in a nearby town to spend time at a riverside beach. The Juvenile Prosecutor's Office in Turin has reportedly charged one of the teenagers with voluntary manslaughter. He is currently confined to house arrest. Police interrogations revealed he may have acted to take back €50 (£40) Abdou owed him. One boy told police: 'Abdou said he couldn't swim, but the other guy grabbed him and threw him in the water.' Despite the good weather on April 21, the day Abdou was allegedly thrown in, the river was treacherous. Rescuers abandoned their search after a week. Abdou, who was born in Italy and is of Senegalese descent, leaves behind his mother, father, two brothers and sister. His father, Khadim, told local media: 'He dreamed of becoming a footballer and played for Bra first, then for the team in Roreto, Cherasco. 'But he couldn't swim. Unfortunately, I wasn't home that day, and he left without telling his mum where he was going. Otherwise, we would never have let him go to the river with those friends. 'I hope this breakthrough in the investigation will at least lead to the search for my Abdou being restarted. I just want them to let us bury his body and have a grave where we can mourn him.' His family plan to send his body back to Senegal to be buried, once officials find it. The news of Abdou's death comes just months after a teenage boy died after being buried alive when a sand tunnel he was digging on a beach in Italy suddenly caved in. The 17-year-old, named locally as Riccardo B., was on holiday with his family when tragedy struck on the popular Montalto di Castro beach, near the border of the Tarquinia region in north-west Italy. Riccardo had been playing in the sand, carving out a tunnel that he intended to crawl through from one side to the other. But as he passed through the centre, the structure gave way without warning, swallowing him whole and leaving no trace on the surface. A swimmer who witnessed the horror said: 'He had built a tunnel. He wanted to enter from one side and exit from the other. 'But as he passed through, when he reached the centre, everything collapsed and the hole was completely covered. 'You couldn't see anything anymore; you could have walked right through it and not noticed a thing.'

'Let him suffer, I want to see him suffer': 13-year-old boy 'gang-raped by five private school classmates after prolonged bullying campaign collapsed into mother's arms and became catatonic'

A horrifically bullied 13-year-old boy was allegedly gang-raped by five classmates from a private school while on a sports trip to Malaga - who then blackmailed him into keeping it a secret. Terrified the bullies would come after his younger sibling at the same school, the traumatised student was reportedly forced to suffer in silence before having a mental breakdown and entering a catatonic state. After being hospitalised over the course of several weeks, the victim, now 16, had 'chronic post-traumatic stress disorder with severe episodes of dissociative amnesia', it was reported in a Spanish newspaper. Only one of the alleged attackers has since been charged in Valencia's Juvenile Prosecutor's Office, two years on from the gang-rape. The cruel group, three of them under 14, had plagued the young boy at school, mocking his glasses or acne and excluded him from events or forced him to sit in the back. When at home, his phone was then bombarded with pornographic content from an unknown number. In March 2022, the school based in Valencia put together a sports trip to Southern Spain. It was there that the sadistic group then allegedly ambushed the 13-year-old in the hotel hallway before locking him in a bathroom where the horror unfolded. Some members of the sick group reportedly raped the boy, while the others cheered on with the leader hauntingly saying 'let him suffer, let him suffer, I want to see him suffer', according to the reconstruction of the events conducted by the Juvenile Prosecutor's Office. The boy was blackmailed into silence, with threats sent over social media. One member called him more than 300 times. It was his younger brother that was on the line - who the 13-year-old thought would be next if he told someone about the horrific attack. The boy was subjected to two months of daily humiliations and threats, eroding his mental health, before he collapsed into the arms of his mother in a catatonic state. He was taken hospital where he was admitted up to three times over a period of 35 days. The 13-year-old received psychiatric treatment and has had to work with psychologists to work through his amnesia allegedly triggered by bottling up the horrifying attack. The psychologist alerted the alleged abuse to the parents and referred the case to the police before alerting the principal of the students' school. Although the victim recalled the names of the students during his first clinical assessment, he was unable to provide details during a meeting to give an official statement due to the emotional block. However, his first testimony was supported by two other psychiatrists who had seen the boy during hospital and was told the same encounter. The youth who has been charge could be looking at a 15 month sentence, as well as two years of supervised release and to undergo a sexual education program. But the members of the group are either too young to be held criminally responsible or invoked their right not to testify as their involvement has not yet been proven. A sixth potential attacker may still be at large but police were unable to uncover his identity thanks to the suspect's lack of information shared during interrogations. Another minor has been investigated over harassment and threats to the victim to stop them from speaking out. A teacher at the school, which the victim and siblings left once the case became public knowledge, said: 'Everyone at school knows a student was raped. 'The principal banned trips and overnight activities outside of Valencia after the complaint, ten children in the same grade left the school, and the members of the parent-teacher association resigned.'
