Revenue minister inaugurates 'Saaral Vizha 2025' in Courtallam

Revenue Minister K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran inaugurated the 'Saaral Vizha 2025' at Courtallam on Sunday. As part of the festival the minister also inaugurated a four-day flower exhibition, organised by the Horticulture Department at the Eco park in Courtallam. The annual Saaral festival held during the southwest monsoon season (saaral season), commenced on Sunday will continue until July 27 (Sunday) , featuring a wide range of competitions and cultural performances at Kalaivanar Auditorium in Courtallam. Speaking at the events Mr. Ramachandran said the current government is organising all the arrangements in a systematic and well coordinated manner. Whether it is conducting public events, carrying out welfare activities for the people, or ensuring that welfare schemes reach the intended beneficiaries. The inaugural day of the festival featured a series of cultural performances by school students and other artists. Bharathanatyam, folk arts, Nagaswaram was performed, as part of the celebration. On the inaugural day, the minister also awarded cash prizes to the winners of the chubby kids competition. The second day of the festival is set to feature yoga competitions, multicultural students programmes in the Kalaivanar Auditorium. In the evening, events including folk drama, silambam, villisai, and other shows are scheduled. Tenkasi District Collector A.K. Kamal Kishore, Tenkasi Superintendent of Police S. Aravind and other officials were present.

Stalin inaugurates 729 new homes for Sri Lankan Tamils across five TN districts

In a significant step toward improving the living conditions of Sri Lankan Tamils in Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Monday inaugurated 729 newly-built houses in rehabilitation camps across five districts. The inauguration was conducted via video conference from the State Secretariat, in the presence of Revenue and Disaster Management Minister K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran and Chief Secretary N. Muruganandam. Constructed at a cost of Rs 38.76 crore, the houses are located in refugee camps situated in Villupuram, Tiruppur, Salem, Dharmapuri, and Virudhunagar districts. These homes are part of a broader rehabilitation initiative by the Tamil Nadu government, announced under Rule 110 in the state Assembly in August 2021, aimed at upgrading infrastructure and living conditions in Sri Lankan Tamil camps spread across the state. As per the government's long-term plan, over 3,510 houses are to be built at a total estimated cost of Rs 180.34 crore in 35 rehabilitation camps. Of this, 2,781 houses in 32 camps across 18 districts have already been completed and handed over to beneficiaries. The state has also undertaken supplementary infrastructure upgrades in these camps to improve the quality of life. These include new internal roads, upgraded electricity lines, and enhanced drinking water supply facilities. The total cost of these civil works stands at Rs 7.33 crore. According to an official release, the rehabilitation programme is part of the DMK government's commitment to provide a dignified life to Sri Lankan Tamils who have been residing in 67 government-run camps across 26 districts of Tamil Nadu for decades, after fleeing ethnic conflict in their homeland. The Chief Minister, in his remarks during the inauguration, reiterated his government's resolve to continue supporting refugee communities through improved housing, access to basic amenities, and welfare schemes. He also emphasised the importance of integration and inclusion, ensuring that displaced populations can live with dignity and security. The ongoing rehabilitation efforts are seen as a model approach in refugee welfare, combining both humanitarian concerns and infrastructural development, and have received appreciation from human rights observers and community leaders alike.

Minister flags off new services of mini buses in Virudhunagar

Revenue Minister K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran on Monday flagged off new services of six mini buses in Virudhunagar. The new mini buses have been introduced under the New Comprehensive Mini Bus scheme - 2024. Under the scheme, new services could be allowed for 25 km in routes. A total of 38 routes were taken up for scrutiny and out of which the six mini buses were permitted on new routes. Similarly, 11 existing mini-bus services were allowed for migration permitting them to ply on extended routes. The Minister said that the administration was improving transport facilities based on the demands raised by the local people. He added that the present transport facilities would help people in all the routes. Collector V.P. Jeyaseelan, Municipal Chairman Madhavan, Regional Transport Officers Manickam (Virudhunagar) and Chandrasekar (Srivilliputtur) were present.

Residents of Palayampatti protest against denial of jobs under MGNREGS

Residents of several areas under Palayampatti panchayat staged a protest here against denial of job under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) on Thursday. The protest was organised by Cauvery Vaigai Kiruthumal Gundar Irrigation Farmers' Federation. Its Virudhunagar district president, Rampandian, said that the State Government had announced annexure of parts of Palayampatti panchayat with Arupukottai municipality. However, after the promise made by the Revenue Minister, K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran, that the merger with urban local body would not be done, the people of those areas gave up their protests. In the meantime, the job under MGNREGS has been denied to the areas in Palayampatti panchayat proposed for merger with Aruppukottai municipality. 'The Aruppukottai Panchayat officials claimed that the district administration has given oral instruction not to give jobs under the scheme to the people of those areas. The officials of the union have been warned of recovering the wages under the scheme to be given to the people in the event of merger of those areas with the municipality is announced,' Mr. Rampandian said. He added that the people of these rural areas were in burdened with additional expenditure as their wards have to go back to school after reopening.

Renovated Gandhiji Centenary Bus Stand inaugurated at Rajapalayam

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Thursday inaugurated the renovated Gandhiji Centenary Bus Stand at Rajapalayam, through video conference facility. The bus stand has been renovated at a cost of ₹2.90 crore under Kalaignar Nagarpura Membattu Thittam by Department of Municipal Administration and Water Supply. Revenue Minister K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran lit a lamp to mark the formal inauguration in the presence of Virudhunagar Collector V.P. Jeyaseelan, Tenkasi MP Rani Shrikumar, Rajapalayam MLA S. Thangapandian and Rajapalayam Municipal Chairperson A.A.S. Bavithra Shyam. The Minister said that the old bus stand constructed in 1969 on Tenkasi-Madurai Highway was demolished and the new building was constructed on 1.41 acres of land. The new building, measuring 926 square metres, has got waiting room for the passengers, 23 shops, two hotels, room for nursing mothers, cloak room, time-keeper office, police control room, and toilets for men, women and differently-abled persons. Virudhunagar Collector said that a dilapidated building of a library near the bus stand had been demolished and efforts were underway to construct a new building at a cost of ₹1 crore
