Stalin inaugurates 729 new homes for Sri Lankan Tamils across five TN districts
The inauguration was conducted via video conference from the State Secretariat, in the presence of Revenue and Disaster Management Minister K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran and Chief Secretary N. Muruganandam.
Constructed at a cost of Rs 38.76 crore, the houses are located in refugee camps situated in Villupuram, Tiruppur, Salem, Dharmapuri, and Virudhunagar districts.
These homes are part of a broader rehabilitation initiative by the Tamil Nadu government, announced under Rule 110 in the state Assembly in August 2021, aimed at upgrading infrastructure and living conditions in Sri Lankan Tamil camps spread across the state.
As per the government's long-term plan, over 3,510 houses are to be built at a total estimated cost of Rs 180.34 crore in 35 rehabilitation camps. Of this, 2,781 houses in 32 camps across 18 districts have already been completed and handed over to beneficiaries.
The state has also undertaken supplementary infrastructure upgrades in these camps to improve the quality of life. These include new internal roads, upgraded electricity lines, and enhanced drinking water supply facilities. The total cost of these civil works stands at Rs 7.33 crore.
According to an official release, the rehabilitation programme is part of the DMK government's commitment to provide a dignified life to Sri Lankan Tamils who have been residing in 67 government-run camps across 26 districts of Tamil Nadu for decades, after fleeing ethnic conflict in their homeland.
The Chief Minister, in his remarks during the inauguration, reiterated his government's resolve to continue supporting refugee communities through improved housing, access to basic amenities, and welfare schemes. He also emphasised the importance of integration and inclusion, ensuring that displaced populations can live with dignity and security. The ongoing rehabilitation efforts are seen as a model approach in refugee welfare, combining both humanitarian concerns and infrastructural development, and have received appreciation from human rights observers and community leaders alike.

Over 2.84 lakh Tripura farmers got Rs 45.43 crore under PM Kisan, says CM Manik Saha
After Prime Minister Narendra Modi released the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi's (PM-Kisan) 20th installment on Saturday, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha said that over 2.84 lakh farmers from the state received Rs 45.43 crore under the scheme. 'Under the visionary leadership of Hon'ble PM Shri Narendra Modi Ji, various steps have been taken to empower our farmers. PM Kisan Samman Nidhi is a significant step in this direction,' Saha wrote on X. 'Today, the 20th installment of the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme – Rs 20,500 crore virtually disbursed by the Hon'ble PM to honor the farmers across the country including Tripura. A total of 2.84 lakh farmers from Tripura received Rs 45,43,74,000. Attended a programme held at the State Agricultural Research Center, A.D. Nagar on this occasion & encouraged the farmers.' While speaking at a separate programme of the Sampoornata Abhiyan Samman Samaroh, Saha said the BJP Government laid emphasis on providing people from all sections with proper facilities and had been working to improve the socioeconomic condition of the people in the state's underdeveloped areas. Saha further stated that the Government had launched a project titled Targeted Rural Initiatives for Poverty Termination and Infrastructure ( TRIPTI) to uplift nearly 4,000 poor families in the Ganganagar block of Dhalai district and in the Dasda block of North Tripura district. The chief minister added that nearly 55 crore zero-balance accounts were opened throughout the country under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana. Saha also inaugurated the Navdisha Abhiyan, with an Rs 50-crore outlay for the socioeconomic development of 10,000 families living in 16 blocks across the state. 'The Government's target is to upgrade the lifestyle of the marginalised families. Campaigns for the socioeconomic development of those who have not joined the self-help groups (SHGs) for various reasons have been launched,' he added. The state has 53,951 SHGs, with 4.84 lakh women members, under the Tripura Rural Livelihood Mission. Saha said the Central Government had identified 112 aspirational districts and 500 aspirational blocks throughout the country for special development efforts. 'Emphasis has been given to different sectors like health, nutrition, education, agriculture, and social development in each block. The indigenous leaders' monthly allowance has recently been hiked from Rs 2,000 to Rs 5,000. Our Government has prioritised the integration of castes and tribes,' the chief minister added.

Revenue officers announce agitations in Tamil Nadu seeking to implement demands
Members of the Tamil Nadu Revenue Officers Association (TNROA) have announced a series of agitations against the Tamil Nadu government and to draw the attention of Chief Minister M.K. Stalin to get their long-pending demands implemented swiftly. Speaking to media persons on Sunday, TNROA president M.P. Murugaiyan, State general secretary S Sankaralingam and other office-bearers said that at a time when the employees were finding it tough with implementation of many welfare programmes, the recently launched 'Ungaludan Stalin' among others had led to an added burden and exhaustion to their workload. The association's central executive committee meeting was held in Krishnagiri on July 31. Many resolutions were passed. It was resolved to meet the Chief Secretary on August 7 and apprise the official of the issues. In the next phase, the meeting resolved to abstain from their works (an hour earlier) on August 12 and stage demonstrations in front of collectorates/headquarters. Even if this does not work, the entire workforce affiliated with the TNROA, which has 14000 members, would abstain from work for two days - September 3 and 4, the resolution stated. The EC members alleged in the meeting that in many districts and at the Secretariat, the revenue employees were instructed to conduct camps for three days in a week. In some districts, the staff members were not even allowed to take the lunch break. The higher officials wanted response given back to the public swiftly. The officials should either put the schemes on hold or implement their demands, which are just and required for the administration to function smoothly. It would be impossible to take forward the schemes with a skeleton strength. When the government wants the populist schemes to reach the masses, the administration should also be equipped to handle them. If the minimum required human resources could not be provided, it may not be possible to execute it in a proper manner and on time as expected by the top bureaucrats. The association has been demanding fresh recruitment to the vacancies, which accounted to 30 % in the revenue and disaster management departments. 'We are the main department for taking up the programmes of the government to the people. When the DMK was in the Opposition, they promised to bring back the old pension scheme. The CM, had then, given an assurance to fill vacancies as early as in 2019,' Mr Murugaiyan said. After coming to power in 2021, though the Revenue Minister KKSSR Ramachandran agreed to the demands and after continued talks, when it was decided to implement some of them in May 2023, even that had not been given shape till date, Mr Murugaiyan said and added that some of the top officials were not keen to get the demands implemented.
