Congress, VCK to boycott Tamil Nadu Governor's tea party on Independence Day

Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) president K. Selvaperunthagai on Wednesday (August 13, 2025) said that the party's MLAs will boycott the tea party to be hosted by Tamil Nadu Governor R.N. Ravi at Raj Bhavan in Chennai on Independence Day. Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) founder Thol. Thirumavalavan thanked the Governor for the invitation but said the party would also not be participating in the tea party. In a short statement, Mr. Selvaperunthagai said that the boycott was to condemn the 'anti-Tamil Nadu activities' of the Governor and against the Election Commission of India's (ECI) Special Intensive Revision (SIR) carried out in Bihar. 'We also condemn the Tamil Nadu Governor's decision not to give his assent to the Bill passed in the Assembly to set up a university named after Kalaignar Karunanidhi in Kumbakonam, and instead sending it to the President,' he said. In 2024 too, the TNCC boycotted the Governor's tea party, alleging he had consistently tried to obstruct the functioning of the democratically elected government in the State.

TNCC president Selvaperunthagai takes a dig at collapsing bridges in BJP-ruled States

The bridges that are just completed or under construction in BJP-ruled States are collapsing almost every day, said Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president K. Selvaperunthagai here on Tuesday. He was speaking to reporters at Aliyar after inspecting the dam. He said that the Aliyar dam was constructed by the late Chief Minister Kamaraj and it still stands tall today. Whereas, the bridges in the BJP-ruled States are collapsing while under construction or immediately after their inauguration. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is in the habit of undertaking foreign tours when Parliament is in session, he said. The Tamil Nadu Congress Committee will urge Mr. Modi to instal a statue of late Congress leader Kakkan who was instrumental in the construction of Aliyar dam, he said.

Congress should be strengthened at grassroots to keep fascist forces away, says TNCC president

The Congress should be strengthened to defeat fascist and communal forces that are working overtime to gobble Tamil Nadu in the 2026 Assembly elections, according to Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president K. Selvaperunthagai. Addressing a party meeting here on Saturday to accelerate formation of village Congress committees in every hamlet of Tirunelveli district, Mr. Selvaperunthagai said INDIA Bloc had set the target of winning more than 200 Assembly segments in Tamil Nadu in the 2026 Assembly elections, and this could be achieved only if the Congress was strong enough at all levels. Hence, 21,000 village committees were being formed across the State, each with a president, vice-president, secretary, treasurer and 10 committee members. If the Congress was strengthened before the polls, no one could ignore it and its cadre's dream of getting more Assembly seats and more positions in local bodies would get realised, he said. 'Even though Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP are working hard to wipe out the Congress, the party that created a new India from scratches after Independence, is still alive and vibrant enough to rule three States despite the sinister designs of the RSS and its BJP,' he said. Nanguneri MLA and TNCC treasurer Ruby R. Manoharan, who has formed village Congress committees in all villages of his Assembly constituency, said the resounding victory of INDIA Bloc in the 2026 Assembly elections would herald the elimination of Modi-led 'autocratic governance'. Killiyoor MLA Rajesh Kumar said the Congress was still active in Tamil Nadu due to the party cadre even though it lost its power in 1967. 'If we strengthen the party at the village level, we can take on the miserably failed autocratic administration of the Narendra Modi-led government. Moreover, we can fight for the welfare of the villages by getting its due share for creating due infrastructure in rural areas,' he said. Former MLA and Congress restructuring committee president S. Peter Alphonse said the formation of village committee would give the much-needed opportunity to identify the party's strengths and weaknesses and take appropriate remedial measures. Tirunelveli MP C. Robert Bruce urged the TNCC president to get a minimum of two Assembly segments in Tirunelveli district for the Congress in the 2026 Assembly elections.

BJP bringing up Katchatheevu issue to divert attention from Centre's failure to secure T.N. fishermen's rights: TNCC chief

Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) president K. Selvaperunthagai on Saturday said the BJP was raking up the 50-year-old Katchatheevu issue to divert attention away from the Union government's failure to ensure Tamil fishermen don't face violence and harrassment from the Sri Lankan Navy. In a statement, Mr. Selvaperunthagai said External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar was trying to cover-up the actions of the Sri Lankan Navy against Tamil Nadu fishermen over the last 11 years of BJP rule at the Centre. He also clarified that Katchatheevu was not ceded to Sri Lanka during Emergency. 'The External Affairs Minister has made factually incorrect statements. Emergency was not in effect when the agreement [to cede the island] was signed on June 26, 1974. On July 23, 1974, the then External Affairs Minister Swaran Singh tabled a report in the Lok Sabha and addressed Parliament. All political parties, including the BJP, participated and voiced their opinions,' he said. 'After the Congress government, did Prime Minister Vajpayee, during his six-year tenure, or Prime Minister Modi, during his 11-year rule, ever hold talks with the Sri Lankan Prime Minister about reclaiming Katchatheevu? If Katchatheevu was truly the root cause of the fishermen's problems, the Indian government should have raised this with Sri Lanka,' Mr. Selvaperunthagai added. He said: 'Tamil Nadu fishermen are not arrested near Katchatheevu. Instead, they are arrested when they unintentionally cross the maritime boundary into Sri Lankan waters, especially during nighttime fishing. Therefore, the BJP government must hold talks with Sri Lanka to secure fishing rights in those waters based on the livelihoods of Tamil Nadu's fishermen.'
