Villagers cautioned as flood level rises in Godavari

With the flood level rising in Godavari river, officials of various departments have been asked to remain alert and take measures to prevent human loss in Eluru district. Flood level at Bhadrachalam was recorded at 33.7 feet on Sunday evening, the Central Water Commission (CWC) officials said. Irrigation Department authorities said that the water level was at 30.400 metres at Polavaram project, and the officials released 5.52 lakh cusecs to the downstream. Collector K. Vetri Selvi directed the officials to be alert, and keep boats and expert swimmers ready as a precautionary measure. She asked the villagers not to cross river on boats and go into waters for fishing and swimming. 'As Godavari is in spate and heavy rain forecast is issued, villagers were asked not to into the river. Officials of Revenue, ITDA, Panchayat Raj, Medical and Health, Police, Sachivalayam and other departments were asked to remain in their posted villages,' said an officer deployed on flood duty in Eluru district. Control room opened Villagers staying in the low-lying areas at Velerupadu, Kukunur, Jeelugumilli and other mandals were cautioned as there is heavy rain prediction for the next two days. Tribals residing in the habitations along the river bank were asked not to cross the overflowing rivulets and 'saptas' (low-lying bridges) in the Agency villages. PGRS cancelled Eluru District Revenue Officer (DRO) V. Visweswara Rao announced that the Public Grievance Redressal System (PGRS), scheduled on August 18 (Monday), has been cancelled due to heavy rainfall prediction. Eluru MP Putta Mahesh Kumar directed the officials to evacuate the people staying in vulnerable places and shift them to rehabilitation centres. 'Due to heavy rainfall prediction and flood alert issued for Godavari river, public are requested not to enter the river and shift to safer locations,' Mr. Mahesh Kumar said. He directed the district officials to supply milk, drinking water, vegetables and other essentials to the villagers staying in vulnerable places. 'The Fire, Revenue, A.P. Transco and the police should coordinate and take rescue and rehabilitation operations in the Agency villages,' the MP said.

Calls for the removal of liquor belt shops near residential areas took centre stage at the district-level Public Grievance Redressal System (PGRS) programme at Eluru Collectorate on Monday. District Collector K. Vetri Selvi, who chaired the meeting, directed officials to address the petitions and all public grievances promptly, warning that negligence would not be tolerated. Vadlapati Venkateswara Rao of Kowvali in Denduluru mandal was among the petitioners, urging authorities to shut down liquor outlets operating close to homes, citing public nuisance and safety concerns. Other petitions included requests from Chintalapudi mandal, where Dasari Suresh Kumar of Yandapalli sought guidance to set up a food processing centre to generate local employment. Meanwhile, Pindi Elisha of P. Kannapuram in Dwarakatirumala mandal asked for correction of land records and issuance of a pattadar passbook. Vanarasi Lakshmi Rajyam from Kamavarapukota mandal complained of encroachment blocking access to her agricultural land and in Vara Venkateswara Rao from Jeelugumilli mandal sought enhanced compensation after losing part of his house to a road-widening project. In total, 268 petitions were received from across the district during the session, attended by Joint Collector P. Dhatri Reddy, District Revenue Officer V. Visweshwar Rao, RDO M. Achyutha Ambareesh, Sub-Collector K. Bhaskar, ZP CEO M. Srihari, DRDA PD R. Vijaya Raju, SC Corporation ED M. Mukkanti, Survey AD Ansari, and Municipal Commissioner Bhanu Pratap. The Collector instructed the officials to be fully conversant with the grievance redressal portal and to conduct on-the-spot inspections when needed. She emphasised that complaints should be resolved at the mandal and divisional levels, with final approvals and closures handled by district-level authorities to ensure quality outcomes. Petitions must be settled in such a way that they do not require reopening, she added.

ELURU Eluru District Collector K. Vetri Selvi called upon everyone to actively participate in the 'Har Ghar Tiranga' campaign to foster patriotism among citizens. The Collector on Monday flagged off a rally from the Indoor Stadium, organised under the aegis of SETWEL. The rally, featuring a 100-foot-long national flag, proceeded from the Indoor Stadium to the Fire Station Centre. Speaking on the occasion, the Collector said that the Har Ghar Tiranga initiative was being celebrated across the district to strengthen the spirit of patriotism, national pride, and unity. She urged citizens to hoist the national flag at their homes and to participate in designated selfie points set up in various locations, uploading their photos with the flag to the official website. She noted that the programme has already received an encouraging response in the district. The Collector reminded everyone of the supreme sacrifices made by countless freedom fighters and martyrs for India's independence and stressed the need to honour their memory through such events. ELURU To improve the livelihoods of women belonging to Development of Women and Children in Rural Areas (DWCRA) initiative, the district administration will launch a palm leaf handicrafts skill training programme from August 18, said Eluru Collector K. Vetri Selvi. The Collector and Joint Collector P. Dhatri Reddy inspected various handicraft products made from palm leaves by local women here on Monday. Speaking on the occasion, Ms. Vetri Selvi said that under the guidance of the District Rural Development Agency (DRDA), women from self-help groups (SHGs) in Chintalapudi and Lingapalem mandals will receive training in crafting items such as flower baskets, hats, garlands, floral bouquets, and decorative dolls from palm leaves. The training will be conducted at Chintalapudi. She explained that after the training, the products would be marketed online and showcased at DRDA-organised exhibitions to increase demand and popularity. The administration will also facilitate access to bank loans and other credit facilities for the artisans. The Collector interacted with the DWCRA women, discussing ways to expand their opportunities and ensure sustainable income through handicrafts. DRDA Project Director R. Vijaya Raju and other officials participated in the programme.

West Godavari district administration gears up for August pension distribution

As part of the government's flagship NTR Bharosa Pension scheme, the West Godavari district administration is set to disburse pension worth ₹114.25 crore to 2,61,592 beneficiaries for August, District Collector K. Vetri Selvi announced on Wednesday (July 30). The Collector instructed the officials to ensure a smooth and timely disbursement. Payments will begin at 7 a.m. on Friday. For beneficiaries unable to collect their pensions on the first day due to unavoidable circumstances, the payments will be made available on August 2. To facilitate the distribution, arrangements have been made with the help of 5,303 village and ward secretariat staff and other government personnel. The Collector urged the pensioners to remain available at their homes on the designated dates and requested the staff to provide advance notice to ensure accessibility. Widow pension The government has approved 4,358 new widow pensions (spouse category) for August. In Agiripalli mandal, 200 beneficiaries will receive the pension, 152 in Bhimadole , 107 in Buttayagudem, 160 in Chintalapudi and 404 in Eluru Urban. The administration has affirmed its readiness to execute the distribution efficiently.
