To improve the livelihoods of women belonging to Development of Women and Children in Rural Areas (DWCRA) initiative, the district administration will launch a palm leaf handicrafts skill training programme from August 18, said Eluru Collector K. Vetri Selvi.
The Collector and Joint Collector P. Dhatri Reddy inspected various handicraft products made from palm leaves by local women here on Monday.
Speaking on the occasion, Ms. Vetri Selvi said that under the guidance of the District Rural Development Agency (DRDA), women from self-help groups (SHGs) in Chintalapudi and Lingapalem mandals will receive training in crafting items such as flower baskets, hats, garlands, floral bouquets, and decorative dolls from palm leaves. The training will be conducted at Chintalapudi.
She explained that after the training, the products would be marketed online and showcased at DRDA-organised exhibitions to increase demand and popularity. The administration will also facilitate access to bank loans and other credit facilities for the artisans.
The Collector interacted with the DWCRA women, discussing ways to expand their opportunities and ensure sustainable income through handicrafts. DRDA Project Director R. Vijaya Raju and other officials participated in the programme.

Speaking on the occasion, the Collector said that the Har Ghar Tiranga initiative was being celebrated across the district to strengthen the spirit of patriotism, national pride, and unity. She urged citizens to hoist the national flag at their homes and to participate in designated selfie points set up in various locations, uploading their photos with the flag to the official website. She noted that the programme has already received an encouraging response in the district. The Collector reminded everyone of the supreme sacrifices made by countless freedom fighters and martyrs for India's independence and stressed the need to honour their memory through such events. Joint Collector P. Dhatri Reddy, DRDA PD R. Vijaya Raju, DSP P. Shravan Kumar, District Tourism Manager Pattabhi, SETWEL CEO K. Prabhakar Rao, District Sports Development Officer Srinivasa Rao, other officials, and students from various educational institutions took part in the event.

5,000 acres required for Polavaram R&R package in Eluru district

Eluru District Collector K. Vetri Selvi directed officials to expedite the land acquisition process for the Rehabilitation and Resettlement (R&R) works of the Polavaram project. At a review meeting held here on Tuesday, the Collector said that an additional 5,000 acres of land is required in Eluru district for the implementation of the R&R package, which includes land-for-land compensation, construction of R&R colonies, and other facilities for project-displaced families. As much as 800 acres have already been identified in Buttayagudem and Jeelugumilli mandals, she said, and instructed that the remaining 4,200 acres be acquired at a pace of 500 acres per week, which should be completed by August 15. Ms. Vetri Selvi emphasised that only non-tribal lands should be identified for acquisition, and there should be no encroachments by tribals or others. Once the lands are identified, grama sabhas (village meetings) must be conducted in the respective villages. The Collector instructed that RDOs and DSPs should engage with farmers and ensure village-level consultations in their presence. Joint Collector P. Dhatri Reddy, Special Collector S. Sarala Vandana, Alluri Sitarama Raju District Chinturu ITDA Project Officer Apoorva Bharat, District Revenue Officer V. Vishweshwara Rao, and others were present.
