Parkville loosening restrictions on short-term rentals ahead of World Cup 2026

PARKVILLE, Mo. – Next year's World Cup 2026 matches will be here before you know it. At least one Kansas City metro city is getting a head start on cashing in on this worldwide event. KC leaders looking to fill vacant businesses ahead of KC2026 World Cup , like Air BnBs, hoping to attract fans to that neighboring city. Parkville sits about 20 minutes from the heart of downtown Kansas City. For a three-month window next summer, Parkville municipal leaders will allow an unlimited number of short-term rentals, hoping to bring visiting soccer fans here. Parkville is presently home to nearly 9,000 people, and a thriving downtown. Present ordinances allow for four short-term rentals per city ward. Those restrictions will be loosened beginning May 1, 2026. 'I would stay here because it's real cozy and comfy,' Annette Hagen, , said. Hagen knows hundreds of thousands of World Cup soccer fans are expected to crowd into the metro for soccer's biggest show next summer. Property owners will still need a city permit to open a short-term rental. Hagen is considering transforming another apartment into a second short-term rental property. 'It's like a full apartment,' Hagen said. 'I think it will be really good for the city. I heard there will be a lot of people who are going to be here.' Parkville Mayor Dean Katerndahl supports loosening those regulations. The mayor likes that this will allow property owners to rent their homes and rentals to others, and that permission to do so won't be permanent. Council authorizes KC Current to negotiate park along levee near CPKC 'We want to expose people, and we want our people to have a good time while the World Cup is here. It's quite an honor to have as many games as we're going to have here,' Katerndahl said. Fans of short-term rentals say they appreciate the extra space, and room for multiple people that most hotels don't offer. Adam Bernero, a father of five from Chicago, prefers short-term rentals. Bernero and his son are staying in a nearby rental during a baseball trip. 'You might be able to have your family come stay with you, if you can split it with another family. That's always nice,' Bernero said. Download WDAF+ for Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV Katerndal said Parkville is the metro's second-fastest growing city. It's also a short distance to Riverside, Missouri, where a World Cup team could potentially make its headquarters at KC Current's training facility. Kansas City's series of World Cup matches are scheduled to begin on June 11, 2026. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. KC2026: Charter busses will take you to World Cup matches

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Local leaders just completed a survey on how fans and residents want to get around the city when the FIFA World Cup comes to town next year. The survey's closed, according to KC2026, the local planning committee preparing for the six matches taking place at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium in June and July of 2026. The survey addressed questions about transportation. Download WDAF+ for Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV One of the questions was if services were available, would you consider using public transportation to get to and from World Cup games instead of driving a car. Thursday, KC2026 Chief Operations Officer Lindsey Douglas said there will be a bus that will take fans to the stadium if they're planning to go to a match. 'Those busses will be charter busses,' Douglas said. 'That is the type of bus that will be used. Related to that specific survey question, busses are viewed as public transportation, right?' 'Whether they're charter or not?' FOX4 responded. 'Right, no matter the type of bus, that is kind of the approach that we're taking.' Quindaro Townsite designated as National Historic Landmark In March, KC2026 announced they've secured 200 busses for the World Cup. Fans will go to a park and ride location and then go to the stadium. The park and ride locations have not been made known. 'We are hoping to announce them later this summer,' Douglas said, talking about the locations. 'We have another deliverable, kind of a next round deliverable due to FIFA in October.' Kansas City Area Transportation Authority Chief Operating Officer Chuck Ferguson said you likely won't be taking a KCATA bus to a game. Instead, he said you could take one to connect to the Streetcar on Main Street and then head to the National World War I Museum and Memorial for Fan Fest. 'It's going to be highly secured around there,' Ferguson said of the area south of Union Station. 'There's going to be a lot of congestion around there, probably a lot of pedestrian congestion, and so we don't want to be driving into that area. People are going to have a really hard time driving their own vehicles to that area, so we absolutely advocate people taking the Streetcar as much as possible, and we'll get them there at various locations north and south.' COMPLETE COVERAGE: Kansas City hosting 2026 World Cup matches Ferguson also said there could be less than 2,000 parking spots available match day at the stadium. 'You as a Chiefs fan that goes to a regular game, you're used to driving there,' he continued. 'Maybe you tailgate, maybe you don't, but you're used to parking, not going to happen for World Cup.' KC2026 should get the results back sometime next week. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

As crime rises in Kansas City, Mayor Lucas prepares for trip to Qatar

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — As violent crime continues to plague Kansas City, local business leaders are voicing frustration, with unless urgent action is taken. Meanwhile, Mayor Quinton Lucas is preparing for an international trip to Qatar — a move that has raised eyebrows among some. Rep. Graves asking RFK Jr. to look into cancer cases at Liberty school 'I'll be part of a Bloomberg kind of crew, it's a set of Mayors and others that will be part of all of that,' the Mayor told FOX4 on Wednesday after we asked him directly about the trip, which had not been publicly disclosed until now. Multiple sources confirmed to FOX4 that the trip had been planned in advance, but details about the funding are still unknown. According to sources, the Qatari government is covering the cost of the visit. However, when pressed on this point, the mayor said he wasn't completely certain who was paying. 'This would be Bloomberg foundation, I believe, but I'll have to make sure I get the exact details with us – but that's usually how we work this out,' he said. Following FOX4's questions, the Mayor's office sent out more details regarding the trip in a news release on Wednesday afternoon. As has been their practice over the years, the Qatari Embassy in Washington recommended the Mayor's participation based on Kansas City's status as a FIFA World Cup city and is sponsoring this familiarization delegation of mayors from American cities. Mayor Lucas expects to be accompanied by four other U.S. mayors and Jeff Lodermeier, a U.S. State Department local diplomat assigned to Kansas City. The mayor's office consulted the US State Department under both the Biden and Trump administrations prior to planning and agreeing to travel. There will be no cost to Kansas City taxpayers for the Mayor or Mr. Lodermeier's travel. Office of Mayor Quinton Lucas Qatar, which hosted the last FIFA World Cup, is a notable international player as Kansas City prepares to be one of the host cities for the 2026 tournament. Still, no one from the Kansas City Sports Commission or the KC2026 organizing team is expected to join the trip, according to the mayor. Nearly 20 new measles cases confirmed in Kansas amid outbreak; no new cases in Missouri In response to an inquiry, a spokesperson told FOX4: 'No, no one from the Sports Commission nor KC2026 is headed to Qatar this week. No meetings are scheduled either.' Instead, this trip is limited to a group of U.S. mayors. While overseas, the mayor says he plans to meet with Qatar's minister of sport, but emphasized that his main goals are economic development and international exposure for the city. 'The goal is to make business contacts get a chance to share the brand of Kansas City… One we always look to make sure that we have other international connections and contacts. That's an important thing of what we do' he said. The mayor also revealed he recently met with Qatari officials in Kansas City. 'I actually met with the Qatari ambassador to the United States, I think about a week and a half ago. So, he was here in Kansas City, always looking for different investments,' he said. However, Qatar's reputation on the international stage is complex. The Gulf nation has long faced scrutiny over its alleged ties to terrorist organizations. President Donald Trump, during his first term, accused Qatar of funding terrorism 'at a very high level.' Leaders from Hamas — the group behind the that killed more than 1,000 Israelis — had been based in Doha before being expelled last year. When asked about these associations, Mayor Lucas dismissed concerns. Woman shot and killed in Midtown Tuesday night, police say 'I don't actually think they're sponsors of terrorism – I think you're getting a little far afield on that,' he said. The mayor did meet with Wednesday to address concerns around . This is a developing story. FOX4 will continue to follow updates as they unfold. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The City of Independence is asking voters on Tuesday, April 8, to consider three general obligation bonds totaling $197 million that would fund capital improvement projects related to public safety, transportation and parks. Each question related to the general obligation (G.O.) bonds requires 4/7ths of the vote — or 57.14% — to pass. Your Local Election Headquarters: Candidates, races and results on FOX4 Also referred to as the 'IndeGO' bond program, the city said this is the first time in its history that it has put G.O. bonds on the ballot.
