KCAL News partners with Medical Mission Adventures for Mental Health Awareness Month

With just one week left in May, KCAL News continues their initiative to spotlight local nonprofit organizations working to help people impacted by the wildfires in January. Each week, a local nonprofit is that works to address both the long-term and immediate mental health needs of children, families and the elderly has been featured. This week's organization is Medical Mission Adventures. Scan the QR code to access the Medical Mission Adventures website and make a donation. KCAL News Medical Mission Adventures is a team of local medical professionals who travel to disaster zones to help people suffering from psychological triage and physical injuries. They've already helped many impacted by the fires, continuing their profound work to help those most in need. Recently, they've visited Maui after their own devastating wildfires in 2023 and have traveled to Ukraine, as their war with Russia continues. Last week, KCAL Cares partnered with the Pasadena Senior Center. Prior to that, they partnered with Sycamores, and in the first week of May the Special Needs Network Los Angeles was featured. Mental Health Awareness Month started in 1949 to help break the stigma surrounding mental health treatment, according to the National Alliance on Mental Illness. May's initiative is the latest under the KCAL Cares banner, a commitment KCAL News made after the January wildfires. Soon after the Palisades and Eaton fires, KCAL News partnered with the American Red Cross to help raise money for those impacted by the devastation. We're also hosting Coffee with KCAL, an ongoing segment in which the KCAL News staff connects with communities impacted by the wildfires to help them rebuild and recover.

KCAL News partners with Sycamores for Mental Health Awareness Month

As May continues, KCAL News has partnered with another local nonprofit organization, continuing their initiative to highlight those working to help the so many that were impacted by January's devastating wildfires. Each week, a local nonprofit that addresses the immediate and long-term mental health needs of children, family and the elderly will be featured. This week's organization is the Sycamores. San the QR code to access the Sycamores website and make a donation. KCAL News For more than 100 years, Sycamores has been fighting to help vulnerable children and families earn a better life by helping during times of need. It was previously known as two separate entities in the Kiddie Koop and The Pasadena Children's Training Society before a merger in the 2000s, continuing their mission to cultivate hope and resilience by providing a voice to those who are rarely heard, speaking out for policy change on local, state and national levels. May is Mental Health Awareness Month and KCAL Cares is working is a number of local organization to raise money to help their missions, especially following January's deadly wildfires. There are a number of organizations and resources that offer an array of services and support to those who might be struggling or need some help. Here is a list of resources in Southern California and nationwide: Los Angeles Department of Mental Health For 24/7 Help, please call the LADMH Help Line at (800) 854-7771 Access Center for Service Referrals, Crisis Assessments and Field Deployments – available 24/7 Offers Mental health screening and assessment and/or Referral to a service provider. Also: Crisis counseling Mobilizing field response teams Linkages to other services and resources Emotional Support Warm Line with Trained Active Listeners – available 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily (option 2 when calling the Help Line). Veteran Line for Mental Health Support and Connection to Veteran Programs – available 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily (option 3 when calling the Help Line). Additional help lines and resources National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI): (800) 950-6264; NAMI is the nation's largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness. Didi Hirsch Center provides psychological and psychiatric services to children and adults.
