PDP for converting Karachi into modern efficient liveable city

KARACHI: Megacity Karachi is one of the least developed megacities of the world and there is a need to convert it into a modern efficient liveable city, said Pasban Democratic Party (PDP) Chairman Altaf Shakoor here Sunday. He said that the dream of having a liveable city is the old dream of Karachiites, which is yet to be materialized. He said we need Karachi as an efficient modern megacity that offers a high quality of life, sustainability, and opportunities for its residents. He said that Karachi has become a congested city dotted with hundreds of poor slums. Karachiites want affordable and quality housing, with diverse options for different income levels. It needs well-maintained buildings and neighbourhoods, efficient and reliable public transportation, with Karachi Circular Railway (KCR) as its backbone. It also requires reliable, affordable, and well-connected transit systems of buses, bike and bicycle lanes. Better public transport would reduce road congestion and air and noise pollution. Altaf Shakoor said that the megacity has very sparse parks and green spaces, gardens, and recreational areas. He said better safety standards, and lower crime rate is the need of hour. The safe city project is facing an extended delay which is worrisome. The megacity needs effective law enforcement and community policing, besides well-lit streets and pedestrian-friendly infrastructure. A city can't be called liveable without better access to quality healthcare and education, well-equipped hospitals and clinics, good schools, universities, and lifelong learning opportunities. He said growing joblessness is a major concern of Karachi. It needs a strong economy & more job opportunities, for which diverse industries and employment options are necessary. He said the government should support small businesses and the fisheries and maritime sector. Shortage of potable water, electricity and gas load shedding are perpetual issues of Karachi, he said, adding clean potable water, stable electricity and gas should be ensured for the Karachiites at top priority, besides well-maintained roads and public facilities. He demanded of the federal and provincial government to allocate ample funds for Karachi in the coming budget to make it a liveable megacity. Modern megacities are self sustainable efficient cities in terms of amenities and resources. Water, electricity and gas should be available to all residents at affordable prices. Circular railways connected with road networks are essential elements of the modern transportation system of smart cities. Resource allocation should be in accordance with organic population growth and migration rate. Mega cities can only be managed effectively through elected representatives operating a transparent system. Copyright Business Recorder, 2025

BJP MP Raghunandan Rao terms Kavitha's dharna a 'media stunt'

Hyderabad (Telangana) [India], June 2 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Raghunandan Rao dismissed BRS MLC K Kavitha's call for a 'Maha Dharna' at Indira Park as a political attempt to remain in public view. The protest, scheduled for June 4, comes in response to a notice issued by the PC Ghose Commission to her father and Telangana former Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao in connection with the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project. Calling the protest unnecessary, Rao said, 'Instead of doing a dharna at Indira Park, whatever the allegations against KCR, you can go and deny it before the commission.' Labelling the protest as mere theatrics, he said, 'Doing dharna is a mere political stunt to gain some relevance in the media, and there is nothing else to it.' Rao said the proper procedure should be followed in the matter and clarified that the Centre cannot independently initiate a probe without the state's consent. 'It is the duty of the state government to write a letter to the CBI, or to the Central government, to take the case. The CBI or the Centre cannot take the issue directly.' Kavitha, who had on May 21 objected to the PC Ghose commission's notice to KCR in connection with the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project, has announced the protest as a response to what she termed 'calculated political conspiracy'. In a post on X, Kavitha emphasised that Kaleshwaram was built for the welfare of farmers. 'The notices to KCR Garu over the Kaleshwaram project are part of a calculated political conspiracy to tarnish the image of a true people's leader. Kaleshwaram was built for the welfare of farmers and future generations, not for politics. Today, this inefficient Congress government is undoing the very progress Telangana fought for,' Kavitha wrote. The BRS MLC further highlighted that KCR has devoted his life to Telangana and the transformation of barren lands into fields of prosperity, which is now being targeted by the 'visionless' regime. 'KCR Garu, who has devoted his life to Telangana, transforming barren lands into fields of prosperity, is now being targeted by a visionless regime. No vindictive Government can diminish his legacy. The truth will prevail, and history will remember who stood for the people and who tried to bring them down,' the post read. Justice PC Ghose Commission on May 20 had issued summons to former Telangana CM K Chandrashekar Rao (KCR), former Minister Harish Rao, and BJP MP Etela Rajender, who also served as a minister during the BRS regime, in the ongoing investigation into alleged irregularities in the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project (KLIP). The Commission, which has been probing financial and procedural lapses in the multi-crore irrigation project, directed the three political leaders to appear for questioning in the first week of June. According to the sources, KCR was asked to appear before the Commission on June 5, followed by Harish Rao on June 6 and Etela Rajender on June 9. (ANI)

BRS, Jagruthi are KCR's two eyes, says Kavitha

HYDERABAD: BRS MLC and Telangana Jagruthi founder K Kavitha condemned the Commission of Inquiry on Kaleshwaram's notice to former chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR). Inaugurating a new Jagruthi office near her residence in Banjara Hills on Saturday, she performed a special puja with her husband Anil Kumar and addressed the media, starting with the slogans: 'Jai Telangana, Jai KCR, Jai Jagruthi.' No BRS flags were seen during the inauguration of the office. 'BRS is KCR's one eye and Telangana Jagruthi is the other,' said Kavitha during the inauguration. She warned against attempts to malign him. Announcing a massive protest at Indira Park on June 4, she said engineers and irrigation experts will join to expose the Congress' 'conspiracy' against Telangana. She criticised the Ghose Commission as a 'Congress Commission' and questioned summoning KCR, who implemented schemes like Rythu Bandhu, Rythu Bhima and KCR Kits. She argued that summoning him was akin to summoning the people of Telangana. Targeting CM A Revanth Reddy, the BRS MLC accused him of not honouring Telangana martyrs and demanded he participate in the June 2 State Formation Day celebrations. She questioned the naming of the 'Rajiv Yuva Vikasam' scheme and asked why it wasn't named after Telangana figures like Srikanth Chari, Yadi Reddy, or PV Narasimha Rao. Kavitha also demanded action over Andhra's alleged 200 TMC water diversion and criticised Revanth's meeting with the PM without raising BC reservation issues. She called for 42% BC reservation before local body elections. Praising Telangana Jagruthi's role since 2006, Kavitha highlighted achievements like the official celebration of Sevalal Jayanthi and installation of Dr Ambedkar's statue. Meanwhile, Kavitha announced the expansion of Jagruthi across all communities — SC, ST, BC, minorities, Adivasis, Sikhs and Christians — to fight for their rights.

Kavitha puts Telangana Jagruthi on par with BRS

Hyderabad: BRS MLC Kalvakuntla Kavitha has on Friday put Telangana Jagruthi on par with Bharat Rashtra Samithi by saying that both are two eyes of her father and former chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao. Addressing a press conference after inaugurating the Jagruthi office at Banjara Hills here on Saturday, Kavitha, who is also president of Jagruthi, said that Jagruthi would have separate minority cells for Muslims, Sikhs and Christians, which would champion the cause of minority rights. "We will form an SC and ST section and crusade for their welfare. If KCR has one eye on BRS the other eye is Jagruthi. We will not be silent if something happens to him," said Kavitha, who floated Jagruthi 18 years ago to take up cultural and other activities in support of separate Telangana movement. The Jagruthi president announced a protest programme at Indira Park on June 4 against notice issued to BRS supremo KCR by PC Ghose Commission. "Why were they issued in the first place? For constructing Kaleshwaram project? For providing water to 20 lakh acres through Kaleshwaram every year? For providing Rythu Beema and Bandhu schemes for farmers? I wonder if it is the Kaleshwaram Commission or a Congress Commission," fumed Kavitha, stating that issuing notices to the 'Father of Telangana' was issuing notices to the entire state. The BRS leader said that it was the misfortune of Telangana that Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy did not even say 'Jai Telangana'. "I demand that Reddy at least say 'Jai Telangana' and pay tribute to the martyrs. Those who do not say Jai Telangana and do not pay tribute to the martyrs do not deserve to run the state affairs', she said. Meanwhile, Kavitha demanded changing the name of government scheme Rajiv Yuva Vikasam and naming it after Srikantha Chary, Yadi Reddy or former prime minister PV Narsimha Rao. "What does Rajiv Gandhi have to do with Telangana," she asked. Srikantha Chary and Yadi Reddy died during the Telangana agitation. The MLC alleged that Revanth Reddy remained a silent spectator when Telangana waters were being diverted to Andhra Pradesh. Its Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu wants to construct the Banakacherla project and divert water, but the Telangana CM is not even reacting. "Why is the CM so weak? Why is the CM working for the interests of neighbouring states? When KCR was the CM, he proposed river interlinking from Topakulagudem, but at that time the central government did not agree and said that it would be taken up from Ichchampally. There is an attempt to transfer 200 TMC of Godavari water from Polavaram. Godavari water will be permanently taken away from Telangana," she cautioned, demanding Revanth Reddy to clarify on the issue on June 2. She further said that the CM should demand the Centre to convene an apex council meeting by an early date. The Jagruti president recalled that her organisation has been fighting for the BC Bill for the last year and a half. Recently, when Revanth Reddy met Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he spoke about projects but did not talk about the BC Bill, she said. "I am warning the BJP that if they try to put the BC Bill in the cold storage, we will fight in a way that will hurt them. We will organise a rail roko. Jagruthi will fight until 42 per cent reservation is provided to BCs in institutions. We will fight until we achieve Rs 2,500 for women and a scooty for girls, she said Kavitha said that since its launch almost 18 years back, Jagruthi has raised a strong voice on issues pertaining to the people of Telangana. KCR and party idealogue Jayashankar called for working on cultural issues, inspired by which Jagruthi was floated, she said.
