KCS Superintendent shares insight into preparations for upcoming school year

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — With another school year behind us, preparation for the upcoming school year is now in full swing. Knox County approved their budget on May 20, of which 66% will go towards Knox County Schools funding. KCS superintendent Dr. Jon Rysewyk said he is proud of the strides the district is taking with the 865 Academies. Babalu on Gay Street closing for the second time '865 Academies is really about making big small,' Rysewyk said. 'It's really about taking a high school of 2,000 students and trying to make it smaller. We have had great results from less discipline, less failure rates, and we think even increased grad rates. Last year we had a graduation rate of 93% which was one of our highest on record.' School safety is a focal point for the district. This school year it launched its Text-A-Tip app. 'It was a great thing to have that, I think what that does is its something on every students chrome books, so it's about accessibility, do they use it, can they get it. It's also people can text in from their phone,' Rysewyk said. In February, KCS hired Carlo Granillo as its Chief of Security. 'He's a great model for his officers to see,' Rysewyk said. 'He just loves this place, he just wants to protect kids and do well. I see that in his heart and I think he is going to do a great job for us.' Could the University of Tennessee leave the SEC? Lawyer explains new state law The growth in Knox County has also been seen in the district. The school broke ground just a few weeks ago on a new elementary school in Farragut totaling to $43.7 million. 'We also uncovered the best practice, that looking at data the more transitions a kid has, the less likely they are to be successful. We see that sometimes from elementary to middle, that's kind of a big transition for kids to learn hallways, new teachers, new rules,' Rysewyk said. 'Farragut is one of our two communities that still had a primary and intermediate that was created years ago just for a space issue, but we had a chance to come in and go, 'That transition between second and third grade is really an unnecessary transition.'' The district hopes to have the school open in two years. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

Knox County budget plan includes pay and equipment upgrades for Knox County Sheriff's Office

Knox County property taxes will stay the same in fiscal year 2026, pushing Mayor Glenn Jacobs closer to finishing eight years in office without a tax hike. Jacobs at his May 5 budget address announced plans for extra pay and equipment upgrades for the sheriff's office, and cited the Knox County Schools budget amount as requested by the superintendent. 'These are funds that pay for our teachers, our custodians, school security officers, and other essential staff who show up every day to serve nearly 60,000 students,' Jacobs said of the schools portion of budget. The proposed county budget is around $1.1 billion, roughly 3% higher than this year's budget, according to a press release from the county. Nearly two thirds of the spending is for KCS. County employees, including officers in the Knox County Sheriff's Office, would receive scheduled cost of living raises plus an additional 1% raise under the proposal, totaling 2% salary increases this year. 'I wish I could match what we have been able to do these past five years but, unfortunately, our finances are tight,' Jacobs said. 'Just like the private sector, and all of us here today, local governments are subject to inflation. So, putting together a fiscally responsible budget is harder than ever.' The budget includes $5 million in increased funding for the Knox County Sheriff's Office to pay for overtime, funding for officers' pensions, raises, increased contract costs, new body cameras, new tasers and new vehicles. 'It is tough to be in law enforcement,' Jacobs said. 'I think I speak for everyone here when I say how grateful we are to our deputies, how much we appreciate them and will always support them.' Other Knox County budget highlights include: Money for KCS building projects in Farragut and South Knoxville Money for the final phase of the Schaad Road extension, linking Oak Ridge Highway to Pleasant Ridge Road Money for improvements to Canton Hollow Road and the Marietta Church roundabout The Knox County Commission must vote on the budget by June 30. S. Korea, US customs authorities hold high-level talks to boost cooperation

The Korea Customs Service said Tuesday it held high-level talks with the US Customs and Border Protection last week to enhance bilateral cooperation between the countries' customs authorities. The meeting took place in Washington, DC, on Friday between Park Hun of the KCS, and Ha Sung-h of the CBP and other officials, the KCS said in a press release. The talks were arranged in response to the South Korean government's efforts to address challenges posed by the US tariff policies introduced under President Donald Trump's administration. During the meeting, the two sides shared their perspectives on key issues of mutual concern and explored ways to strengthen reciprocal customs cooperation. The KCS also relayed concerns and suggestions collected from South Korean businesses operating in the United States, particularly regarding customs clearance difficulties. The KCS said it will continue to bolster cooperation with US customs authorities to help create a more favorable trading environment for domestic firms doing business overseas. (Yonhap)

New department seeking to take over Knox County Schools clothing center

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — A new department may be taking over the Knox County Schools Clothing and Resource Center as the Board of Education is set to consider their proposal. In February, the board sought proposals from groups looking to take over the operations of the clothing center, which distributes clothes to more than 2,000 students each year. The proposals were considered by the Clothing Center Committee, which recommended the proposal from the Knox County Schools' School Culture Department to the board. 'Without them, I wouldn't be here' Survivor reunites with heroes who saved his life The board will discuss the proposal during the May 5 work session and consider it during the regular meeting on May 8. The School Culture Department focuses on the social and emotional well-being of students and looks for ways to eliminate disparities in both academic achievement and discipline. Under the proposal, school social workers would take over the clothing center. Under the proposal, KCS will work with community partners to provide clothing to students identified by a school social worker as having a need. The social worker will then complete the online referral form, and the order will be sent to the student within 24 hours. Students will receive five outfits, one pack of underwear, and one pack of socks per semester. Items like personal hygiene products and kitchen supplies will be available as donations come in. $700M Knox County Schools budget proposal includes additional $19.7M for staff KCS social workers will choose the community partners. The proposal lays out that they will make 10 contacts each year to request support for the clothing center. For the 2025-2026 school year, KCS will partner with 865 Academies, Project SEARCH, and National Honor Society students to help with clothing drives and to help wash donated clothing. In addition, the proposal says that KCS will employ two full-time employees to ensure orders are filled within 24 hours. They anticipate needing more than 10 volunteers each week, although the exact number is still being determined. To read the full proposal, click here. KuCoin CEO BC Wong Joins Industry Leaders at TOKEN2049 - Highlights Path Toward a Safer, Smarter Crypto Future

VICTORIA, Seychelles, May 1, 2025 /CNW/ -- As part of TOKEN2049, one of the most influential gatherings in the digital asset space, KuCoin CEO BC Wong joined a high-profile panel discussion titled "What's Next for Crypto Markets: The Exchange Perspective." On stage, he and fellow panelists discussed the evolving role of crypto exchanges as they reach a critical turning point—balancing rapid innovation with increasing regulatory scrutiny. BC Wong emphasized that exchanges are no longer just trading platforms—they have become essential financial infrastructure. Over the past five years, KuCoin has made substantial investments in rebuilding its core systems, including a complete revamp of its wallet architecture, the development of a real-time data system, and enhanced security frameworks. With the majority of KuCoin's 1,000+ global employees working in engineering roles, the company's development strategy is deeply rooted in technical excellence and long-term scalability. Beyond technology, BC Wong stressed the importance of proactive regulatory engagement. In many markets, regulators now expect to be involved from the earliest stages of product development. To support this shift, KuCoin has assembled a dedicated team of more than 20 scientists and analysts focused on compliance, proof-of-reserve systems, and transparent reporting. "The role of exchanges has changed," said BC Wong. "It's no longer enough to launch fast and fix later. We must collaborate with regulators from day one—because trust isn't just earned from users; it must be built with the entire financial ecosystem." BC Wong also reaffirmed KuCoin's belief that regulation should not be seen as a constraint, but as a catalyst for long-term credibility. He reiterated that security remains KuCoin's top priority—a lesson learned through the company's own experience. As the industry matures into a more regulated environment, BC Wong emphasized that platforms willing to lead in transparency, risk management, and regulatory collaboration will be best positioned to shape the next chapter of crypto. Looking ahead, BC previewed KuCoin's plans to launch dedicated, compliant platforms in Europe and Australia in the second half of 2025, alongside continued expansion of the KCS ecosystem to bring more utility and value to global users.
