America's Second-Ever Quadruplets Were Born a Century Ago and the Last Sibling Just Died

The Perricone quadruplets made global headlines when they were born in Texas on Halloween in 1929 The brothers were the first surviving male quadruplets in the world and dubbed the Alphabet Quads On Monday, June 2, Carl Vincent Perricone Sr., the last surviving quadruplet, diedThe last surviving sibling of a history-making set of quadruplets has died. Carl Vincent Perricone Sr., who was part of the second documented set of quadruplets born in the United States, died at the age of 95 on Monday, June 2, CBS affiliate KFDM, KJAS radio station and ABC affiliate KBMT-KJAC reported. The family did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment. When Anthony, Bernard, Carl and Donald Perricone (hence the nickname the Alphabet Quads) were born in Beaumont, Texas, on Halloween in 1929, they were the first surviving male quadruplets in the world, according to the Museum of the Gulf Coast. Their Italian immigrant parents, Maria Concetta 'Bessie' Mazzu Perricone and Philip 'Filippo' Perricone, had already lost a daughter to whooping cough and had five sons when the babies were born. Following their unprecedented birth, the quadruplets made global headlines. The boys appeared in the news again on their first day of school in Beaumont in 1935, KFDM reported. When the four boys were grown, their special connection carried them through when they were drafted in the Korean War. Normally, siblings were not permitted to serve together, but then-Senator Lyndon B. Johnson helped ensure they were in the same unit while stationed in South Korea, the museum said. When the brothers returned home, they worked together at Pure Oil Refinery before Anthony decided to become a barber. Carl and his two brothers remained at the company until retirement, according to the museum. The quadruplets eventually bought a parcel of land in their hometown, and dubbed the private road Quad Lane, where their descendants still live. Bernard was the first of the quadruplets to die in 1990, followed by Donald in 1991 and Anthony in 1998, the museum said. After his brothers died, Carl continued to enjoy the outdoors and smoking his pipe, according to his obituary. 'He always enjoyed visits from the kids, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, as well as family and friends who found their way to the woods,' the obituary reads. 'Carl will be deeply missed.' He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Anne Perricone, his six children and multiple grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Even as Carl is laid to rest, his legacy of service with his brothers remains. In 2010, he was asked to attend a ceremony with the South Korean president to mark the 60th anniversary of the end of the Korean War, the museum said. Carl attended, representing his brothers and his country. Read the original article on People

Middle schoolers burned doing bear crawls on hot track, TX parents say. ‘Torture'

Parents in an East Texas community are outraged after students suffered burns during a painful workout at school, news outlets report. 'Our students' well-being and safety is a top priority,' Woodville Independent School District said in a statement posted on Facebook following the Monday, May 19 incident at Woodville Middle School. 'The Superintendent and Campus Principal have launched a full internal review and are cooperating with local law enforcement,' the district said. 'Currently, we are aware that students participated in an exercise program promoted on social media that involves bear crawling on the track. Due to the temperature of the track, the exercise resulted in some students reporting injuries,' it added. Police are looking into the incident and charges could be brought, Police Chief Mike McCulley told KFDM, adding the coach's actions showed 'a complete disregard for common sense.' At least 12 parents have contacted police, he said. Parent Cassie George told KFDM her sons are in the same sixth-grade pre-athletics class and suffered 1st and 2nd degree burns, requiring treatment at a hospital. 'He got off the bus and we looked at it, and it was not cuts and bruises, it was straight up burns,' George told the station. 'We were furious about the whole situation, the whole matter. It shouldn't have been done. All these kids that suffered. It should have never happened like that. Like they said, they're supposed to keep kids safe. That is just straight torture that they did to the kids.' The bear crawl workout is nothing new — and neither are the injuries it can cause — but the exercise has regained popularity recently due to social media like TikTok, KMBT reported. It requires hands and feet to be in contact with the ground and, according to KMBT reporters who visited the school's track, the surface was both hot and abrasive. The coach of the pre-athletics class told students they could either do a typical workout that day, or do a TikTok challenge instead, and they opted for the challenge, the station reported. The district said the coach's actions 'do not reflect the values' of Woodville ISD, adding that 'the staff member involved has been removed from campus and will not be returning to the District.' Woodville is about a 100-mile drive northeast from Houston.

3 Workers Die Falling More Than 60 Feet After Scaffolding Collapses at Construction Site

Three people are dead, and two others are injured after scaffolding gave way at a large construction site in Texas, authorities said. "Some type of mishap" caused the scaffolding to become destabilized, causing three Bechtel workers to fall to their deaths at the Port Arthur LNG site in Port Arthur early on Tuesday, April 29, the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office said in a statement on Facebook. Justice of the Peace Brad Burnett told CBS affiliate KFDM that the three employees were men ranging in age from 25 to 42, and that they fell an estimated 65-85 feet. Their identities have not been released at this time. First responders received the call at approximately 2 a.m. local time, according to the sheriff's office. When they arrived at the site, they confirmed that two of the workers had died. The third person later died at the hospital. Two others who were still on the scaffolding were treated for non-life-threatening injuries. An investigation is ongoing, and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration has been notified, authorities said. He used a 3-month-old to wipe snow off his car in a viral TikTok stunt. Now cops are investigating

Texas police are investigating after a man used a three-month-old baby to wipe snow off the windshield of his car in a viral TikTok stunt. The video was taken in Port Arthur, about 90 miles from Houston, after the state was hit by a rare snowstorm earlier this month. In the clip, the man is seen laughing and smiling as he moves the infant back and forth on his windshield to wipe snow off the car. One city attorney told local TV station KFDM he contacted police after watching the clip and becoming enraged. The video has since been taken down. Port Arthur Police Chief Tim Duriso has assigned the case to a patrol lieutenant and detective, he told the outlet. His department made contact with the man in the video and the baby after visiting their apartment for a welfare check. It's routine to get Child Protective Services involved in cases like this, he said. The baby seems to be okay after the incident, but Duriso's department reportedly still wants to pursue a child endangerment charge against the man involved. The department did not publicly identify the man but said he is 25. Two women were with the man when the video was shot, Duriso said, adding that he believes one of them is the baby's mother. 'It's a sad situation,' the chief said. 'I know a lot of people go to social media and they are looking for clicks... but this is not a deal where you should put a baby on the windshield,' Duriso said, according to KBMT. The Independent has contacted the police department for an update on the case.
