FRRO registration must for Nepalese students at JNU

New Delhi: In a first, Nepalese students at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) will be required to register with the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO), a process that was previously not applicable to them due to visa-free entry under the Indo-Nepal Treaty of Peace and Friendship. From the 2025-26 academic year, JNU has made FRRO registration mandatory for all international students, including those from Nepal. Foreign nationals staying in India for more than 180 days are generally required to register with the FRRO, but Nepalese students had been exempt owing to the special open-border arrangement between the two countries. JNU VC Santishree D Pandit said, "Now it is mandatory for all international students to register with FRRO." You Can Also Check: Delhi AQI | Weather in Delhi | Bank Holidays in Delhi | Public Holidays in Delhi Saugat Phuyal, president of the JNU International Students' Association, said that JNU has six students from Nepal. "We have been asked to inform all international students to fill up the FRRO forms, including Nepalese nationals who earlier didn't need to do this," he said. The policy change comes amid increased scrutiny over the welfare of Nepalese students studying in India, following the recent death by suicide of a student from Nepal at Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) in Bhubaneswar. The 20-year-old student was allegedly harassed by a fellow student, which sparked outrage, prompting diplomatic intervention from the Nepal govt. While JNU has not officially linked its new registration rule to the KIIT case, an official on condition of anonymity said the step is part of an effort to standardise record-keeping and ensure proper documentation of all foreign nationals on campus.
